This book is a must for lovers of traditional music. Most of you will know John Cohen for his work with the New Lost City Ramblers and Roscoe Holcomb, often recorded by Cohen, for his haunting, "high lonesome" ballad singing style. Cohen is also an accomplished photographer, and this book, unlike "There Is No Eye" focuses on his photographs of Holcomb and other Southern Appalachian musicians. The material on the accompanying CD is also available on Smithsonian Folkways albums, and I believe some of the DVD material has been issued by Shanachie. But it's good to have this all together, as a reminder of how good Holcomb's singing can be and how important John Cohen's work as a collector and photographer was in creating a documentation of this important music.

The pictures are beyond compare. Came with a CD of great quality. Documents a period of a much underrated and underappreciated folk artist. Buy it for the pictures, not the biography - its broad brush only, too light on details, and that's a pity because this is a beautifully put together book by someone who truly cared.

It is a picture book of images John Cohen took in the late 1950's in East Kentucky where Roscoe Holcomb and others made a tough living and still found time to play their music. It is also a photographic record of visits with folks like Ralph Stanley in Virginia and Doc Watson in North Carolina during 1960's when John Cohen captured split seconds of time on film and gathered information that provided background to his photographic album. The DVD-video and the audio CD are added attractions for folks who love the music of the time gone by.

Fantastic book and DVD. Cohen is a genius. His eye for beautiful scenes and respect for the people of Appalachia is unrivaled.

To me, it's as good as it gets. Reverent, spiritual, authentic.

The collection is wonderful and the reproductions first rate, and presented in a generously sized hardbound format. The book also comes with a CD containing selections of Holcomb's Folkways recordings and a DVD of Cohen's filmed footage, shot around the same time as the photos. There are also many pages of text -- mainly Cohen's reminiscences of his time with Holcomb and his neighbors -- an enriching addition to the book. For me, this is one of the essential old-timey music documents.

If you have the slightest interest in old-time music, buy this. The music is great and the photographs are amazing...Roscoe Holcomb was one of kind and there will never be another...this book is the closest you'll ever get to understanding that...

I am appellate lawyer who deals with Constitutional law and I bought this book as a reference text. This is a great book. It sets out, in a very organized way, the United States Constitution. It then breaks down each section by clause in detail, following each clause with a historical essay by leading legal scholars. I have only begun to read this book but so far it is wonderfully informative. I especially appreciate the translation of all the 'legalese' and the historical anecdotes. This book is for anyone who loves the United States and wants to learn more about how we got to where we are today.

Excllent book on everything that is the foundation of the United States! You can use the book two ways. First, you can just read it it cover to cover (recommended), and second, you can use as a reference. I am continually amazed that there are so few citizens who have read and understood the Constitution. This book helps you achieve both.

Excellent b mute Constitution and related documents, teaches you what you should have learned in school. All US high Schools should use this book and a Constitution course should be mandatory before graduating high school. Teaches how our Federal Govt should work and what it is actually authorized to do, and what authority resides at the state levels. I highly recommend the book. The only problem is that it is physically a large book.

With all the resent discussions of Constitutional violation by our government, I've already been able to thoroughly review several current issues. Plus, it is a very nice, solid, and necessary book to have in your library. I cannot say and emphasize enough how good this book is. For this price, it is a mandatory for anybody in a legal field.

This book will be my new best friend. It made constitutional law much more clearer. I especially liked the historical stories that ran with each Article, Clause and or Amendment. Btw it made it clear the powers that each of the three branches of government where granted thus even though the President wants his wall it's not a law or rule he can Implement by himself this is a great book.

Well this was my first digital textbook and it is very disappointing. The book does not work on my Kindle paper white, and it does not work on Kindle cloud reader. Luckily I have an iPad, which does allow the kindle to display this book. So much for cross platform functionality.

I currently work at a startup, and one of the hats I routinely wear is "PM" aka Product Manager, Project Manager, Product Marketing, Problem Maker, etc. I have some formal education in the form of a Certificate in Project Management through a program that is recognized by the Project Management Institute. The core text of most project management programs is the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge, which is also known as the PMBOK. If this is your first foray into the formal discipline of project management, I'd suggest getting a copy of the PMBOK and skipping this book entirely. The PMBOK gives a very structured overview about the study of project management and it contains several intuitive flowcharts and diagrams that clearly illustrate the principles and goals of good project management. The PMBOK is effectively an ideal framework that project management professionals reference ~ I've been a PM for nearly five years now and I still flip through my PMBOK every once in a while.While the PMBOK gives a good overview about the discipline of project management, it doesn't actually go into detail on how to do stuff. Knowing about a work breakdown structure and actually building one are two very different things ~ and that is where Project Management Tools and Techniques A Practical Guide tries to come in. By combining the concepts of the PMBOK with modern project management software tools, this book tries to build competence through practical application using Microsoft Project. At the end of the day, this is a textbook written for students of project management ~ It is not an introductory book and it probably won't appeal to your average person, unless of course, they are a project management nerd who also happens to be interested in learning a half-dozen ways to create an estimate or how to calculate a critical path. I spent about a week and a half with this book and I've read multiple sections from it ~ to be brutally honest, I found the material to be rather dry and a bit hard to follow. Some sections read like a design-language review about why Microsoft Project does things a certain way. The element appreciated the most were the ProjectNMotion tutorials and multiple references back to the PMBOK, since they provided me with a better understanding of what the authors were trying to convey.

I think the key part of this book's title comes in "tools and techniques." It also say "a practical guide," and I'm not sure it's completely practical. One of the exercises early on in the book is to ask the reader (or student) to list all of the templates in Microsoft Project 2010. Wow, list the templates you can see by opening a program, one of many project programs and also one that is already outdated (2013 is the new release). That's a tool, barely practical--at least you don't the need the book for that.Anyway, the book veers off to a myriad of decision analysis tools. These aren't really project management tools. In fact, I'm not sure really where they'd be applied except maybe if you were an auditor or maybe just a managerial consultant looking to analyze the costs and structure of an organization. These have value. I like the book. But I wouldn't give book this to a newly hired project manager or someone who is in another discipline and now will be managing a project. In the end, this feels like a good business evaluation book, just not a good project management book.

This book didn't have a whole lot of what I'd find useful in project management. It definitely is mainly about "tools" primarily meaning Microsoft Project, so if that's not what you use there's not going to be much here for you. You have to have a good knowledge of the Project Management Book of Knowledge (PMBOK) going in, so definitely not for beginners to the field and you won't find anything here about actually managing and leading a team of people. It assumes the reader is in the field of IT and is geared entirely to that area. I found the writing very dry and hard to follow a lot of times. Ultimately this just isn't a book I personally found useful but for someone heavily into using Project to track their projects and is already well versed in the various aspects of PM, there may be some good information here.

This is not really a story; it's a listing of Mr. Cornwell's books in the order they should be read. It's excellent for me as I like to read stories in the right time context. For example, one of his series has nine books in it so I wanted to read them in order.

Excellent, exciting, dramatic series with a great story line. The development of the characters over several decades makes it very enjoyable. And, the general historical accuracy makes it all the more fascinating. His frequent details make you feel like you are there with the characters.

I've read all of Bernard Cornwall's books. The latest series is the basis of a Netflix series called The Last Kingdom, which I would recommend to all who like history.

Not really as useful as it implies and certainly not what the description indicates. It is nothing but a list of works.

All of his books are well written and worth reading. I believe I have read all of them over the years..

Good historical fiction knitting his character into the historic cloth making making it interestingly good reads. Doesn't miss much of the details of the not so " good ole days " either. Best combat details of the things you may have missed and never thought of.

The book is as advertised. If you're a fan of Cornwall, you need to have this book as a guide to read the various series in the order that they were written. A useful tool.

In my quest to discover more cozy mystery series to love, the title on this one leaped to the eye and pulled me in for a closer inspection. Soul food and murder? I'll take a double helping of that, please.Murder with Collard Greens and Hot Sauce is the third book in the series, but I had no difficulty diving in with this book. I could tell that a handful of characters were recurring, but there didn't seem to be a connecting series storyline that needed me to start from the beginning.Mahalia and her lively cousin are getting their hair done at their usual stylist a few doors down from Halia's restaurant when they learn a local minor celebrity, a hair care gal, will be bringing her entourage to Latasha's salon because of how much Latasha has been able to sell of Monique's product. Halia and her mother make the refreshments for Monique's visit and this draws them in to the flashy and fabulous Monique's celebrity world just in time for a murder.One of the wonderful things about cozies are how much attention they give to setting elements and to the average daily life of the characters as opposed to launching straight at the mystery and revving up the suspense. In this case, we have the world of hair care products and styling for black women and Halia's own mouth-watering kitchen creations in her restaurant and her family life. While, as a white gal, I found the styling side interesting at first, there was a point where I was ready to tap out if there was one more mention of straightener or anti-frizz or conditioner. Like Halia, I like low maintenance dos and I don't get into creative styling so I lost interest in the world of hair care rather quickly. Thankfully, the foodie angle and the lively cast of characters kept me going. Did I mention they end up at a drag queen event at a gay bar?The murder takes a while to tease out between the long set up of the story introducing all the players and teasing out a bit about the regulars. I didn't mind this since this was my first encounter with the series. Plus, the added character development gave me a better idea of the suspects. I wasn't sure who did it and found the twist at the end to be a great surprise. This ended up being one of those stories that I was less into the book for the mystery as to enjoy the characters and their world. It wasn't riveting, but I did get 'cozy'.Incidentally, the author graciously includes the recipes for all that mouthwatering food and beverages that Halia and her mama serve up.So, if you are looking for a new cozy mystery series to try with a fun group of characters, some mouthwatering food, and a slowburn mystery, take a gander at this one.

SPOILER ALERT!Halia and her wacky cousin Wavonne are back! Halia, whose given name is Mahalia, owns Mahalia's Sweet Tea, an always busy and delicious soul food restaurant in Prince George County, Maryland--near Washington, D.C. This mystery focuses on Monique--a very successful owner of a hair product business and her entourage. Monique hosts a glamorous "all-white" dress party; Halia and Wavonne are invited and offer to bring some of the best of Sweet Tea's dishes. But after they leave the party, Monique is found dead and Halia, decides to investigate on her own--well, with Wavonne insisting on tagging along.I've read the prior two books in the series and enjoyed them but one could easily jump right into the book and understand the plot. There were a number of characters who became suspects immediately and some whose motives became apparent later in the book. I thought I had guessed the killer's identity a few times, only to be surprised by another plot twist. I really liked the diversity brought to the cozy genre; it was refreshing that the characters were African-American. My only criticism was the murder happened too late in the book for me.Thanks to NetGalley and Kensignton Books for a digital advance review copy of this book. My review is voluntary.

There were a lot of really good elements in this book. I loved the area that it takes place in (PG County, Maryland!), the dialogue, the restaurant, all the world building the author did.The actual murder doesn't take place until 40% into the book, so after it happens the resolve comes quick.The reveal was nicely done. I'd love to say that I suspected the culprit right away, but the truth is I suspected everyone. There were some very nice twists and turns as I tried to figure it out, but in the end I got to be as surprised as the supporting cast.The reason this book, despite lots of very good things, got a 3 Star review from me is a much more personal reason.I am a very shy and reserved person. I do my best to keep the people around me happy and to do my own thing.Every time Wavonne spoke I could feel my immortal soul leaving my body.She's brash, she's loud, she has no filter. Every sentence had me dying of embarrassment. She's out to have a good time and doesn't care who's watching! I'm sure she's the highlight of many people's read, but I personally am just too shy to survive...Over all, really good book! But if incredibly shy to the point of watching other people say embarrassing things will make you embarrassed, maybe give it a miss.

Between laughing at Wavonne and drooling over the delicious food Halia turns out I was thoroughly entertained!While getting their hair done, a local girl who made it in the big time of hair care pops in with her video crew to shoot one of her top-selling salons. Everyone is excited to meet Monique Dupree and before they know it the ladies are being invited to the big Hair Expo.Inviting them all back to her restaurant for a good dinner, Mahalia is getting some negative vibes coming off a few of Monique’s friends and husband. She’s also getting some nice vibes from their personal chef.But when Monique is found shot to death in her own home, everyone is looking to Mahalia to look into things. And there was plenty to look into! Every last one of them is hiding some nasty secret and Monique it turns out was hiding some of her own. One that could rock her empire.This is one cozy series that I really like.
