Amazon.com Review

When Gourmet magazine opened shop in 1941, it addressed a small epicurean audience. In those days, fine dining was French, seafood specialties always seemed to include cream and sherry, and game made the meal--or so the magazine preached. The bill of fare has changed since then, and fine dining now includes dishes from the world's four corners, commanded by a broad, food-aware audience. Over the years, Gourmet has chronicled all this, changing to reflect a wider, more democratized food scene that has also, paradoxically, raised the bar on what's expected of the average, too-busy cook. The Gourmet Cookbook is the most comprehensive of the magazine's recipe anthologies--a mega-tome offering more than 1,000 formulas drawn from Gourmet since its birth. The statistics are indeed impressive: more than 100 hors d'oeuvre recipes; an equal number of vegetable dishes; 200 desserts--21 chapters in all, touching all courses and including stops at breakfast and brunch specialties; breads and crackers; plus sauces, salsas, and preserves. Included are recipes from Gourmet contributors like James Beard and Jean-Georges Vongericten, and hundreds of sidebars like "Salad Greens Primer" and "Blind Baking," all useful and informative. There are classic dishes like onion soup gratiné, gefilte fish, corn fritters, and peanut butter cookies; "new classics" such as fried calamari and spaghetti alla carbonara; and the "modern," including oatmeal brûlée with macerated berries and grilled lobster with orange chipotle vinaigrette--"every recipe you'd ever want," says the text, something of an understatement. Cooks should know, however, that this is not a basic cookbook, despite its Noah's ark of formulas. Rather, it's a Gourmet cookbook, which means that, notwithstanding some rudimentary recipes, the focus is on the stylishly up-to-date (which is not to deny the excellence of the formulas), resulting, often, in refinements. Thus its recipe for mac and cheese calls for dijon mustard and panko; its beef stroganoff requires cremini mushrooms; its grilled chicken calls for brining; and so on. Recipes can also run to over 450 words, and require unusual ingredients. (A list of sources is provided.) Of all its chapters, those for sweets are the most immediately attractive. For all the praise, though, there's one major goof. The recipe titles are printed in a light butter-yellow color, making them almost illegible. For many readers, this will be a deal-breaker; others will find it merely annoying. Should you own the book? For dedicated cooks and foodies the answer will be, How can I not? --Arthur Boehm

From Booklist

The monthly magazine Gourmet played no small part in the birth of America's gastronomic renaissance of the late twentieth century. Through pictures and intelligent articles by noted food and travel writers, Gourmet made its readership aware of refined food traditions that made everyday American fare seem narrow. Editor Reichl and staff have painstakingly compacted Gourmet's vast reserve of recipes into an anthology of just 1,000 recipes sure to inspire cooks to get to work in their kitchens. The book's coverage of world cuisine is breathtaking, but it has a few omissions, most notably the cooking of sub-Saharan Africa and South America. An exhaustive index serves admirably to guide the reader through the recipes' complexities, analytically referencing recipes by major or unique ingredients. (One of its rare missteps is its conflation of Georgia the nation and Georgia the state.) Both recipes and their instructions are clearly laid out and easy to follow for the knowledgeable cook. A few line drawings illustrate special techniques, but recipes such as that for individual b'stillas could use illustration to give the cook an image of the finished product. The only serious triumph of aesthetics over practicality, the low-contrast pale yellow type of recipe titles burdens anyone with even minor vision impairment. A glossary and a directory of specialty food and equipment distributors round out the volume. Mark KnoblauchCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

Be sure to purchase the newer version, the 2006 edition, with the DVD. It has the darker orange recipe titles, unlike the light yellow text of the original 2004 edition which was difficult to see.The "look inside this book" feature on this webpage still shows the light-yellow text Kindle sample pages, but it also states you will get the newer book version when ordering it. The samples also show the entire index, if you want to see what recipes are in the book. It's an awesome list.I really enjoyed the DVD, which has four cooking demonstrations of recipes from the book. The experts give detailed tips on what to watch for, as well as techniques, at different stages of the process.Given the size and scope of the book, it's unfortunate that photos couldn't be included. The illustrations, used as fillers of blank spaces between recipes, weren't helpful in any way (simple line drawings of eggs, milk bottles, herbs, etc.). A detailed drawing of how the dish will turn out, or a small photo, would have been more useful. There were many beautiful photographs accompanying the recipes in the Gourmet magazines; they could have easily been put into the DVD. Wouldn't that have been great?

While I, by far, am not a wine or food expert, I loved her stories. In this book ,she goes in disguise to critique the restaurants she will be writing about. Many are quite funny ( in all 3 books) and leave you with a smile or laughing out loud even if you are alone while reading.. I found that reading "Growing up at the table" and "Comfort me with Apples (her first 2 books) were necessary to really appreciate "Garlic and Sapphires" She includes many recipes from restaurants and people she learned from. The lists of ingredients are quite long and the instructions are very detailed making them easy to follow. If you are into fancy cooking, it is a great plus.

A surprisingly entertaining book. Of course, a newspaper writer should be a good writer, period, but it just didn't occur to me until I got into this. A friend recommended the book and I'm glad she did. There is humor and pathos in this memoir. The writing about the restaurants made me feel like I was sitting right at the table with Ruth (or whomever she was disguised as at the time.) I'm glad the book wasn't just a compilation of restaurant reviews- that would get tedious. Reichl has a real talent for descriptive, humorous, introspective writing. She wrote a couple other books and I will have to have a go at those, as well. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys dining out or reading restaurant reviews. We have a great restaurant reviewer at our local paper and I was thinking he must have had some of the same experiences as this author had. It really makes you appreciate the craft.

I love this cookbook. I received this as a Christmas gift several years ago, and find that I still turn to this one more than any other for recipes and meal ideas. The variety is amazing, the recipes are worded clearly and accurately, and the recipe descriptions are helpful and informative. I have made probably over 100 recipes from this book and the results are generally delicious, sometimes spectacular. Some favorites are the Garlic Lime Chicken Breasts (SO flavorful), Roast Chicken with Pan Gravy (simple, succulent, juicy), Oven-Braised Beef with Tomato Sauce and Garlic (extremely simple to prepare and so delicious), Roasted Beet Salad (sweet beets with crispy Asian pear--go so well together), Pasta with Asparagus Lemon Sauce (highly addictive--and my kids ask for it all the time), Pumpkin Apple Bread (can't wait until the local apple stand gets their Granny Smith apples each year for this bread), Macaroni and Cheese (really spectacular with the crispy Panko topping), Creamless Creamy Squash Soup (have wanted to share this with many restaurants who can't seem to make a squash soup with a good texture and flavor), Chicken with Cornmeal Dumplings (the dumplings are very tender--great comfort food), Cappucino Brownies (elicit raves and pleas for the recipe whenever we serve them), Hungarian Chocolate Mousse Cake Bars (easy, feed a large group), Burnt Orange Panna Cotta (YUM), Pumpkin Chiffon Pie with Gingersnap Crust (this and the Pumpkin Cheesecake with Bourbon-Sour Cream Topping have become Thanksgiving staples), Apple and Calvados Galette (sensational--especially the super flaky all-butter crust). I could go on and on and on.There are some reviews commenting on the light yellow print used for recipe titles, but this was corrected in later printings (we have bought several copies to give as wedding gifts). Along with the recipes, the recipe descriptions, the tutorials, the section introductions, and paragraphs scattered throughout the book give helpful and valuable information on specific ingredients and cooking techniques, as well as the history of many recipes.Fun to read, fun to cook from. A valuable addition to any cookbook collection.

I've read Garlic and Sapphires twice now, and enjoyed it very much both times. It reads nearly like fiction, and has multiple LOL moments for sure. Reich has an engaging writing stile that is at its best in this book; I've read others like "Tender at the Bone" and didn't like them nearly so well, though they do fill in the blanks and I was able to make several connections between those books and G&S in this re-read. I like the recipes I've tried so far, and look forward to trying more - especially the lamb and Brussels sprouts.

Jamie, explains in very simple terms the benefits if a natural hoof and how to best serve the horse. He demonstrates and explains why a horse will do better without shoes and why it is important to allow a horse to be a horse. Jamie gives the horse owner tools to maintain a happy and healthy horse. His insight and knowledge has become a part of my support team.

Love it !!

So informative it will make you ask..WHY the hell do we still shoe our horses? The Natural trim is more for student and professional trimmers. There is a great deal of 'assumed' knowledge in his latest book.(The Guide to natural hoof care is more user friendly and designed for the lay person.)If you Like Jackson you'll like , Welz, and Pete Ramey too.I own a crap ton of hoof care books. And it really comes down to doing what technique is best for that particular horse.A must have in the natural hoof care collection.

Excellent review or for beginners too!

good read

The story centers on Barrie Ann Blythe, and her Aunt Charlotte who had raised her after the death of her parents. Aunt Charlotte had a couple of family secrets, the largest of which she shared with Barrie Ann. The women, and only the women, of their family had a way of knowing things that others did not. When Barrie Ann brought home a young man and announced that she was dropping out of college to marry him before he shipped out to fight in WWII, Aunt Charlotte knew two things, that the war was not going to end quickly and that the young man would break Barrie Ann's heart. This story blends historical romance and paranormal skillfully as it jumps between plot lines a few years apart. The action is compelling enough to keep the reader turning pages to find out not just what would happen next but what had lead up to the 'current' events. The ending is rather open ended, suggesting that perhaps there will be more to the story of the women in the Blythe family.

I really loved it, so I expected another tale that was 'Witchy.' This is instead as much a UFO/USO story as it is a witch story. The main magic involved is that the two main characters come from a family in which the women tend to have premonitions. It's a big part of the story, but it's not what gives the story its soul- instead, the story is about the relationships between these two women, and a wonderful dog named Willow. Dog lovers will love this tale, as Willow takes center stage repeatedly to show just how great a gift a good dog can be.Charlotte, is an unconventional guardian with a secret that's dangerous in early twentieth century America. She raises Barrie, her orphaned niece alone. Barrie often craves a conventional life, and jumps to live the life of the wife of a soldier. That's not all that she'd hoped for, and tragedy after tragedy befall her as she struggles to make a simple life as a farmer, alone with her female pup, Willow. One night, Willow and Barry see strange lights on the harbor, and after that, Barry's life, and her garden, will never be the same.If you like strong female characters, generational tales and wiggly babies, cute hens, and pups, I think you'll like this. If you find the idea of Roswell, UFOs, or USOs intriguing, you'll probably like this. I loved it. I was captured from the first page and read it all in one sitting.Update: It's been weeks since I read this and I'm still thinking about the characters. I was looking through a seed catalog and the book came flooding back. I think a lot of this book appeals to me because of the homesteading aspect of it. It really made me identify with the main character.

I had meant to start "The Witch's Kind" by Louisa Morgan much later but for some reason, I took it with me yesterday to read on the bus. I ended up finishing it within the day. What a wonderful read. It reads like a family drama yet, there it is more than that. In this case, the family is made up of Barrie Anne and her aunt, Charlotte. It is set in small town in Washington state in the post-war period. The story is told from Barrie Anne's point of view. It goes back and forth between the present (1947) and an earlier time. Barrie Anne tells how she lost her parents and how Charlotte came to stay in the same place and never left. When Barrie Anne finds a baby, it triggers a series of events that challenge Barrie Anne and her small circle while also pulling in unexpected elements. The prose is beautiful and the setting atmospheric. It really feels like it is the 1930s to 1940s in the detailing. Also in the behavior of the characters. Barrie Anne is believable in her actions and Charlotte is fantastic. Also, extra points for Willow, the dog who has a character that is more than just a family dog.It seems a simple story. As noted, it is like a family drama but adds in the mystical and odd. It sort of reminds of Alice Hoffman books back when I used to love Alice Hoffman books. It has that same sort of lyrical magical vibe yet it is totally its own tale. Again, it is a great wonderful read. I'm so glad that I decided to give it a try.

The Witch’s Kind is in much the same writing style as A Secret History of Witches. Secrecy and protecting the innocent are major themes, as are strong women. To me, the way this is presented comes across in a defensive, guarded way, as if the narrator is not comfortable with her feelings. In part, it feels defensive, not open. Largely, I get this feeling from the constructed, stiff descriptions. I love descriptive writing, which this book has, but this feels more aloof and haughty than emotional and true, to me, though if you found A Secret History of Witches to your liking, then you should enjoy The Witch’s Kind, as well. People like different things, but to me, the narrator’s descriptions felt more like observations than feelings. It was not evocative. The post-WWII era is a strong part of this book, so if that is a plus or minus to you, bear it in mind. The following piece of info is given quite early in the book, so I am comfortable revealing it, but this is a SPOILER ALERT if you don’t want to know it. +++ SPOILER ALERT +++ The mysterious baby has gills. And that’s the end of the spoiler alert. But that’s JustMe.

I'm new to this author and chose this based upon the title. I was assuming paranormal content but that's a very minor factor here. This is far more a historical romance gone bad. The best part of the book is the lush description of the post war Pacific Northwest. I found that almost irresistible. I felt like the author got the period writing exactly right. Most of this book involves the headstrong marriage to a bad man and the extrication from that relationship. The husband is a real one note villain and far less drawn that the 2 main female characters. The use of water magic added some tone to the book but basically was peripheral to the plot. There is a magical baby who is more a device than anything else. There is a super domestic quality to this book that is fairly charming and low energy. I liked the book but it was not what I was expecting. I think this will appeal to romance readers more than those who prefer paranormal science fiction or fantasy.

Another great read from Susie Kelly! I have several of the authors books and have thoroughly enjoyed them. I Wish I Could Say I'm Sorry gives you a look into Susie's early life in the UK and Kenya. After being asked to make a life changing decision at the young age of 9, she is unwillingly sent back to the UK to live with her father's parents and then into a Catholic boarding school. The story takes you on into Susie's adult life as she enters into marriage. Not the best of circumstances to say the least. It seems that she can never catch a break. The author tells the story without needing sympathy for herself and her circumstances. It's a beautifully written memoir. I have gone right into reading the sequel- Safari Ants, Baggy Pants And Elephants: A Kenyan Odyssey.

Oh dear! Such a disappointment! This is an adolescent whine about all the things she didn't have - not a thing about any one else. A whine about her family, about her bike, about how far she had to go to ride her horse, about her marriage, about England, about .. you name it. Not any recognition of what was going on around her; what was going on in her family; what were the choices she actually had. So sad; she missed the point.

This is a wonderful story of a young girl brought from an England suffering from food shortages to beautiful Kenya not long after WWII. Brought with happy parents from the gray streets of England to a colorful vibrant colony where food was suddenly tasty and plentiful and life was easy with servants, Susie's life was went from idyllic to perplexing all too quickly. You will laugh through your tears and cry through your chuckles. Filled with loving characters from Nan, to Cinderella, to loving Colonists who share their home with a sad little girl, this book shares a happy/sad story far removed from most of our lives (unless we had the luck to move from England to AFrica). I highly recommend this as a carthatic read that you won't be able to put down.

Like other good books I have read, this one stayed with me for a long time. I have read a few of her other books before this one, and I find myself wondering how knowing more about her childhood would have affected my perception of her and her adult adventures in France. I ordered this book because I enjoyed her other books and I like reading about other people's lives that are so different from my own. This book was darker but this woman is definitely very strong and a survivor. My heart went out to Susie Kelly and I find myself wanting very much to meet her and have a conversation - perhaps because the book left me wanting more. (and I would tell her not to be so hard on herself)/ I would have liked some more information about her mother and her father but given the (lack of) communication in her family, perhaps she doesn't have more to write. I would definitely recommend this but agree with another reviewer that while it may start a little slow at the beginning, it definitely picks up when the family moves to Kenya. I couldn't wait to find out how this book ended. I hope she writes a transition from her life in Kenya to where she is today.

Susie Kelly's books have a real charm about them. Unlike some of her other writings, this book is not a cookbook, but rather a sort of autobiography covering her life from age about 8 to roughly into her 20's. As an autobiography, I found it interesting, especially since it takes place partly in Kenya, partly in Europe and partly in England. The societal contrasts of these three cultures make interesting reading, even as revealed by a not yet mature young girl. Although she does not explicitly emphasize her rebellious nature, still, it is clear she lived life with her own very independent personal style, sometimes triumphing over adversity, other times burdened by it, and other times victimized by it. She makes no apologies, indeed, seems to almost unaware that some of her unhappy misfortunes were the consequences of her own (poor) choices. I have four daughters (not to mention six sons), and I can see Suzie as one of my own daughters, who was independent as a young girl, and after suffering some hard life knocks, finally matured at about age 30 ... and has been a responsible and "solid citizen" ever since. I sense in Suzie's writings a spirit kindred to my daughter's: a sort of rebellious (but not using that word herself) nature, developing a late maturity into a solid member of society. In that sense, this book is an unfinished work ... and, Suzie, I encourage you to write a sequel describing your life's next chapter.Did the book hold my interest? Well, I started it about 10 AM and did not put it down until I read the last page at about 6:30 PM the same day! I gave the book 4 stars because it is an unfinished story. Suzie, I encourage you to write the next volume companion to this one, perhaps covering the next twenty years?I gave this book only 4 stars because it is an unfunished work,

#163,876 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This book is a must-read for Christians and those in ministry to have a proper balance in understanding that Jesus is and was on earth first Jewish, and the richness of the Judeo-Christian community of the early 1st-2nd centuries is very key to remember its role in today's faith and church. I have other books that Rabbi Stern wrote and translated that helped me in many ways in my studies in Theology. Easy read for anyone wanted to have a better grasp of understanding the Jewish roots of our faith.[Like a primer in some way; his Complete Jewish Bible, the New Testament translation and Commentary on the New Testament are other suggestion for books to consider adding to your library by Rabbi Stern. Much is lost in translation and though there may be many words that can be used in a translation, unfortunately, the most closest one is often overlooked for whatever reason. It can affect the true meaning of what is to be understood.

Do you want to reach Jews with the Gospel? This is a great place to start. Do you want to see a road of reconciliation between Jews and Gentiles? This is a great place to begin. Do you struggle with understanding concepts of Law/Torah/Grace and how they pertain to both historic and modern Christians? I'd start here. Do you want to know what Messianic Judaism is and where it both marries and deviates from Orthodox Christianity? I'd read this as it is by one of the modern day leaders and scholars of the Jewish Sect. At only 79 pages and with resources to boot in the back of the book, it's a great introduction for all these questions. Get it. Read it. You will not be disappointed, but you may be a bit challenged.

I sent this out as a gift, But I read it about a year ago for myself. I recommend it to all. It explains how the Gospel is from Jesus, who was a Jew and so were his disciples who wrote it. It speaks about Replacement theology, which is in error. I found it a heavy read, but very informative. It uses scriptures to explain things as well. I Pray that all who read this, read with open eyes and an open heart. The copy I received I got from a Messianic synagogue that I attended.

The Gentilized church which formed after the Apostles died morphed Christian concepts onto Heathen practices. I do not condemn Easter and Christmas for their apparent overlay of Gentile heathenism. They still draw attention to Jesus and preach the message of his birth, death and resurrection. However the seven feasts of Israel are the prophetic forms of the first then the second coming of Messiah. These festivals and their history aren't the subject of much study by evangelicals. Their meaning is lost on most Christians because of the Jewishness of those festivals which many see as antithetical to "the Church" which is in fact gentilized and has a No-Judaizing allowed mind set. It is taught that returning to the actual form of Judeo-Christianity would be returning to weaker things and that only "the Church" has God's Spirit and teaches Grace. All the New-testament is an addendum to the Old-testament. Jesus said he did not come to destroy the Torah. But modern Church teaching said he fulfilled it "meaning" it could now be run through the shredder. Dr. David Stern addresses that passage and that misconceived teaching. He, Jesus introduced his topic explaining that He did NOT come to DESTROY the Torah. Proceed with that thought and consider how the four Spring Festivals were fulfilled as prophetic to the events from Jesus' death as the Passover lamb to the giving of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost which commemorated the giving of the Law to Moses by the Holy Spirit. The Spirit given on Pentecost wrote the law on their hearts as prophets foretold. Dr. Stern takes only a few pages to open the case wide of how misconceptions changed the reading of scripture and its very translating.Jesus is a Jewish King and the Son of David the Jewish King of the tribe of Judah which Jacob prophesied over in Genesis 49:8-12, including "A scepter will never depart from Judah, nor a ruler's staff from between his feet, until Shiloh comes, and the people obey him."Much of what people write on this book is a passionate appeal to restore the actual pattern of apostolic Christianity while adding there own text not mentioned in Dr. Stern's book. This book inspires one that way and opens eyes in that direction. I noted that too many Christians are quoting John MacArthur saying "All Catholics and Jews are going to Hell". Jews are a FAMILY starting with Judah, son of Jacob, son of Isaac, son of THE Man Abraham. The Family Tribe of Judah existed for centuries in Egypt and after the Exodus the LAW was the given on the 50th day creating the "Jewish Religion" as moderns call it. Jews are a family, not a religion.Jesus, the Jewish man had Brothers and Sisters whose families would have called Jesus "Uncle." Their children could call him grand-uncle Jesus and their children calling him great-grand-uncle Jesus. Today some Jewish people might still be able to call him their Uncle and that is a family at a kosher picnic to respect.

Learned so much about how restoring the Jewishnes of the Gospel means fulling the fullness of the Gospel as it pretains to the Jews and relationship to the Church.Understand the meaning of biblical words and how through translations they have lost their true meaning, making the impact of scripture less intense and losing the actual meaning that was given in the past.

I recommend this book to all followers of Yeshua. I did not appreciate the Jewish background of our Messiah as much asI should have. This has really piqued my curiosityThank you

Excellent prospective for Christians who seem to have forgotten where Jesus came from.

WHY DOES YOUR CHURCH DO THIS OR THAT? DID THE APOSTLES DO THOSE SAME THINGS? GET INFORMED THROUGH STUDY.
