This book is not up to the quality usually produced by Brill. References cited in the text are not found in the bibliography. For instance, Buckingham, a journalist who is cited several times, not in either primary or secondary sources listed. Said Ruete, a grandson of the Sultan about whom author writes, cited and not in bibliographies. Nor is the author discriminatory in citing the sources--some are highly inaccurate and yet drawn upon as if they were factual. On page 99 the author states that the Sultan of Zanzibar had three wives--as if they were concurrent. In fact, he had only one wife to whom he remained married throughout his life. The other two were Persian women, and he was divorced from both -- married each at separate times. All of his many children were by concubines but author does not make that point, although she does refer to the large numbers of concubines. It would take too much time to go into detail but the above factors are sufficient to warrant significant care in using this work as a source. Probably the single bit of new scholarship involved are the few references from the Italian archives.
