I have loved Joel Abernathy's previous books, so I was excited to see this new series and I wasn't disappointed. It was just as gritty and intense as the previous two books, however there was incredible world building in this one. And to be honest, for me, maybe sometimes too much information. Sometimes I had to go back over what I read, and other times I knew there was no way I was going to remember something. Generally I'm a reader who enjoys to be whisked away and leave the heavy thinking back in the real world. In this one (for me at least) you have to be paying attention at all times. So it was hard to fall into the story when I was trying to learn so much of it. Having said that, the world was fantastic, the concept brilliant, the characters were deep and ones you will definitely cheer for, and I cannot wait to see what happens next for our gang. Wholeheartedly recommend to readers who like multiple relationships, and also who like there to be some tough questions asked of our characters.Just for anyone worried: In my opinion this doesn't end on a cliffhanger. There are some major plot points/questions answered, but many more left open for the next book/s. You have an idea of what is coming, but it hasn't been left in a way to make you feel unsatisfied with the story you just read.

A delightfully complex, breathtakingly beautiful and intensely dark fantasy. The story is enriched by the telling of multiple points of view. Characters are multi-dimensional with strengths and flaws that will show their courage and their despair. The story-line is amazing, action packed and so well developed that i could not put the book down. This is a terrific m/m/m with steamy moments that will heal your heart and lots of moments that remind you that this is a dark romantic fantasy.The world-building was incredible! So much created and woven with magic, and populated with paranormal beings like; Vampires, Faes, Elves, Humans, ghouls, chimera, and an intelligent Chrysalus that chooses to communicate with Arden. The creation of the Brotherhood (resistance) creates a wonderful dynamic and adds a fabulous level of suspense and intrigue.This book has stayed with me because of the rare intensity of connection that i developed with these characters. Each of our characters have struggles and have triumphs. There is so many emotions from betrayal, obsession, heartbreak, hope, disappointment, fear, loss and ultimately love. The impact of this book was intense for me, i carried the sorrow and pain in my heart and looked for validation and love for Arden, our central MC. I wanted to heal the hurt for Vox, Dusk and Leo and of course Arden.I am impatiently looking forward to the next book. I cannot wait for more of this delicious story!

I really liked this book and quickly became invested in the outcome of all the characters. Arden especially. My heart hurt for him and everything that he is going through. I really like book where we get multiple points of view and we are not limited to just one or two MCs. The story itself was really good. It didn’t really bother me that we are left hanging at the ending with not even HFN for comfort. All in all, a really good book. I can’t wait for the next installment.

I was a bit confused at first, but then things started to click, and I couldn’t stop reading! There were plot twists on top of plot twists, and a couple of times when I felt like I had been eviscerated, but it was too compelling to put aside. I love a story that keeps me guessing, and the author has certainly delivered that here. I want to know what happens next, yet I am almost afraid to find out!

This is definitely aa amazing start to this series. The world building is just absolutely amazing. Then we have the twist and turns that us going on in this book. I just couldn't put down because I need to know what is going to happen. I can't wait for the next one!

The book is really good but it does need a proof read because some of the words are wrong. But i love the characters and the growth. Wish it had more from the otherd piont of view not just Ardens.

I feel like the story got a bit over complicated in the end

This is a reference book. You will not find patterns or techniques in it; and it does not examine any particular set of windows in depth; but it does frame the development of style and technology in an understandable narrative, and it has plenty of excellent photographs. This is a gorgeous, valuable, and readable book that serves both as a well-annotated and explained reference work, but also as an entertaining general interest book. However, there is unfortunately one major, frustrating, and very disappointing flaw: the detail of nearly half the maps reproduced in this volume is so poor that it can scarcely be seen with the naked eye; a magnifying glass is needed. As the pages of this work have overly wide top, bottom, and side margins, there's simply no excuse for not having enlarged the maps so that their detail might be savored. It's something of a surprise nobody took on this topic before. It's subject is the decades (largely the 1920s through the 1960s) of maps featuring pictures and drawings in addition to the usual map figures. With nearly 160 color examples (cities, states, war theaters, railway routes, air transport , power company coverage, expositions and fairs, state and national parks, and many others), the author (a University of Maine geographer) provides background on the key artists and publishers of these often whimsical maps. More of these maps were produced in the U.S. than anywhere else. And now they are largely forgotten save for some tourist area maps still produced today. Geography CAN be fun! Recommended.

Great text - but maps are too small for a map book. Would have been better to have used the entire whitespace on the pages and/or have magnified sections.

A excellent and much-needed resource for those collecting or selling in this increasingly popular genre. High quality illustrations. He missed a couple of 2nd tier artists, but that is a small complaint given all those he noted and the numerous illustrations he chose to include.

Truly magnificent in every way, this book will be the definitive work on the subject until the planet melts. I am dismayed by the comments about the size of the maps since this is not an atlas but a deeply researched examination of the significance of this delightful form of cartography. Many of these beauties are wall maps and to reproduce them at 1:1 would require megabooks about 5 feet tall which would make bringing them home from the bookstore difficult. In the real world this study of the creme de la creme of the genre is a meticulously chosen selection arrived at after obvious exhaustive study. Also Hornsby gives us the signposts of who and why and where these things can be seen close up (i.e. Rumsey or the Library of Congress) but to see them categorized and organized under themes is amazing. As books on the history of mapping and the reproduction of maps in same this one is at the top of the cartographic mountain.

Have to agree with A. Lueder's review, the reproductions are woefully small. A book of this nature should have also had some foldout pages as well. But I will give the book five stars because it is absolutely gorgeous. Well-written, and despite the undersized reproductions, still a joy to peruse. Kudos to the author!
