This autobiography of Justice Sonia Sotomayor was an enjoyable read. It provided a lot of detail regarding her upbringing, which was very difficult, as well as her time at Princeton, Yale, and then her years as a prosecutor. For anyone with an interest in the Supreme Court or our legal system, I think that reading this book is a good use of your time.

I've read this book 4 times (so far), and have gone back to it when I've felt the need to be inspired and encouraged. Judge Sotomayor is very open in sharing about the struggles of her childhood, and how she dealt with that and propelled herself to where she is today. What set this story apart from others for me, was the honesty, humor and insight that she brings to her story-telling. Her story is remarkable not just for the professional success she achieved, but her ability and willingness to deal with the painful events of her life and to go beyond that and get to a place of forgiveness. I ended the book having great respect and admiration for the author, and thankful that she was willing to share so openly.

Throughout her early years and into her adulthood, Sonia Sotomayor has been open to listening and learning. Her passion became the Law and what it stood for. With her infatuation for Perry Mason (as a young girl), came her desire to practice law. And, her self-determination and self-efficiency, though she struggled with the poor neighborhood where she lived, and her fathers young death, she persevered. Graduating at the top of her High School Class, and then acceptance into Princeton (graduation Suma Cum Laud) and then attendance of Law Schoool at Yale, she kept herself focused. Ever striving to learn more and more. However, along with this determination came sacrifice. She dealt with the failure of her marriage, and even as an adult, prejudice in both College and in the workplace. She worked hard, earning all she accomplished and became a prosecuting Attorney for the New York City DA's office. After working there for several years (Quite successfully), she continued to focus on her #1 goal to become a Judge. So, she became defense attorney. Her judgeship came late, and then her nomination to and confirmation into the U S Supreme Court. Sonia tells her story with heartfelt emotions that is truly engaging.

I found parts of the the first half of the book - about her early childhood, a bit slow and hard to read, but the second half was for me, a real page turner. It's clear that she is both a brilliant and driven person, as one would expect of anyone who makes it to the supreme court. What's nice is that Sotomayor wrote every word herself, so instead of feeling like a typical professionally crafted biography, this feels a bit more like someone reflecting on her life for her friends and relatives. She intentionally stops right as she steps in to her current role as a supreme court justice. There is so much interesting stuff in this book - about her childhood, going to college and law school - her time as an activist, as well as her time as a prosecutor and in private practice, that I won't even try to summarize the high points. There are just too many. Suffice it to say this is a must read book.

WOW!!! GREAT GREAT BOOK...I just sent a copy to my Sister (Deltona FL) and Sister-in-law (Connecticut). I also purchased the children's bi-lingual book so they can read it with their grandbabies. I am waiting for the Teen book to buy it for my teen nieces...they need to read it and understand that they have to work hard to get up the ladder.When I started reading this book, I felt like connected Sonia and I all grew up in the same house, visit the same part of the Island and experienced the same things (home/school/work). It's strange but I am 1st generation born in Bridgeport, Connecticut and had the same experiences of our Puerto Rican Culture just like Sonia in New York. Coming from humble beginnings, a single parent raising 5 kids, managing to put us through Catholic School. My Mom sold Avon, knitted, sold food and still worked a factory job. I don't know how she did all this with $8,000 and put 4 kids in private school.All in all, if you are a Boriqua - buy it...whether in Spanish or English. Sonia - if you ever read this, I created a tree on Ancestry.com with all your information and ironically, I matched family on Mercedes side and your Mom side. So weird but I do have family that went to NY in the early 1900's from my Great Grandma side but we lost contact. There were my great grandma's brothers Benito and Geraldo Perez from the Bronx. I know Generaldo had twins born on Xmas Day and one of them is Luis and they were in the military. Hopefully someday, I can connect with their children.Thank you for your not holding back, sharing the good, bad and ugly. Thank God that they put you in the Supreme Court because you would really understand the cases having to do with the poor, the imprisoned... and so much more. You have a better understanding to the streets smart than those in the ivy league world or book savvy (not real world experience). Many blessings to you and your family. This memoir will stay with me for a long time. It's just so beautiful and smart and inspiring and honest.A little background is necessary. Daf Yomi (a page a day) is a practice that's been around for about a century but become very popular in the last ten. In doing "daf yomi," a participant reads one "page" (it's really a folio page which is equal to about 3-4 pages a day usually) of Talmud a day until she finishes the entire thing in seven years. Reading the entire Talmud is a monumental accomplishment. It's massive. It's often compared to a sea, as it's deep and wide and can be both refreshing and overwhelming.So, Kurshan takes the brilliant step of telling her life story during the seven years she was doing daf yomi. How wonderful. In less intelligent and empathetic hands, this could have been robotic or cold. Or it would have felt tremendously forced. There are so many pages of Talmud which one would be hard pressed to connect to one's life. But Kurshan does it. Each chapter of her memoir is named after one of the Tractates of the Babylonian Talmud.I was initially temped, upon finishing the book, to think, boy, Kurshan was pretty lucky. A lot happened to her during the seven years she studied the daf. But that's not what happened. In the book's last few pages, Kurshan explains that she started doing daf yomi in the first place because her life felt unmoored; she was looking for something constant, some center. The Talmud became that center. You have to read it every day of your life for seven years whether you want to or not. What happened, as I would imagine happens whenever we read literature or history or poetry is that her study and her life became entwined in a way that makes book nerds like me (and Kurshan) very happy. So in the best possible way, Kurshan's life informed her understanding of what she read every day in Talmud, and conversely, her reading that day made her interpret reality through a lens she wouldn't have otherwise had.I'm not saying this to brag; reading is like breathing for me. I'm a lifelong learner in a fundamental way. IDEALLY, everyone would be no matter what one's philosophical, ideological, political or spiritual bent. But the rhythms of Jewish observance provide ample opportunity to make this ideal a reality. There are countless passages in the Talmud and elsewhere extolling the supreme merits of learning; in a famous passage, when the Rabbis are debating which is more important, deeds or study, the "winning" argument winds up being study---because study LEADS to deed. I bring this up merely to suggest one of the reasons I LOVED this book: I felt like I was encountering a kindred mind and spirit. Kurshan takes her spirituality, her poetry, her family, her mortality, her country, her food, her exercise very seriously; indeed, she inspires me because ALL OF THOSE INFORM ONE ANOTHER. I strive towards accomplishing this in my own life.What a book!

This is a very moving and at the same time a very scholarly memoir by Ilana Kurshan. She takes us from a low place in her life through learning "daf yomi" a project where she learned a page a day of Talmud. This project takes 7 1/2 years and during those years we follow her life from the beginning low through new joys and surprising twists and turns in her life always accompanied by her learning in the Talmud. It is beautifully written and very worth reading

This is not the kind of memoir you've ever read before, and that's a good thing. Kurshan mixes her personal story with 1500+ year old talmudic wisdom, without losing either her narrative or context of the Talmud. Taking on Daf Yomi (the study of one 2-sided page of Talmud each day until completion of all 2700+ pages) as an emotional and intellectual challenge while going through some of the most challenging physical and mental moments of her life is admirable beyond words. Using the wisdom she gained from the experience to lead us all on a journey from Long Island to Harvard Yard to Cambridge to Jerusalem, is revelatory.I was honored and thrilled to call Ilana a friend before reading the book. After finishing it, I'm in awe and you will be too.

I’m giving this book a 5-star rating based on how much I personally enjoyed the book, but I suspect it won’t be as captivating for all readers. I couldn’t help wondering if it was easier for me to identify with and understand the author because of my own background since so many aspects of the book reminded me of aspects from my own life. I am an alumna of the same college and got there by being a driven, perfectionistic high school student with a perfect 4.0 GPA who went running every single day even when in the off-season of cross-country and track. I was a voracious reader who has sometimes read while I walked although not habitually. I remember a young woman in my freshman dorm who suffered from Bulimia and friend of a friend who, like Ilana Kurshan, was Anorexic and wore many thick sweaters to try to keep her starving body warm (and also to hide her dangerously thin body, so that it would not alarm people enough to force her to get treatment). I’ve also visited Israel many times and lived there for a summer, so I know the places in Jerusalem that she talks about. Thus, Ilana’s experiences rang true to me because I’d lived or seen similar experiences myself.I appreciated her deep love of literature even though I was a math/science nerd in college. But I took a full half of my courses outside my major, mostly in the humanities, and I recognized most of her many literary references and even if I am not deeply familiar with most of the works. I see math and science every day in the world around me and I enjoyed seeing what it might be like to have the background to be that way with literature. She gives an appealing view of the experience of seeing Talmud all the time in her life.The author reveals her feelings very carefully and perhaps too subtly for the reader who gave a 3-star review. She may be overly careful to try to not be too judgmental of other people like her first husband and she often second-guesses herself. Many people lash out and blame their ex-spouses for all the problems of a failed marriage. In contrast, Ilana feels “ashamed”, as if she did something wrong or deserved to be divorced. She doesn’t go into great detail about that relationship, but that is because she is, as she says herself, a rather private person, and perhaps it is too painful for her to really remember and retell every detail of what was overall a negative experience. I felt that the vignettes she shares are telling enough to get an idea of the situation. I didn’t want or need to know all the unpleasant details.I enjoyed this book so much that I purposely did not binge-read it, but “saved” some of it to spread out over a couple of Shabbat afternoons and some leisure time after Thanksgiving. It is a book that I will probably want to re-read even though I very rarely do that.

Ilana Kurshan has written a spellbinding book.Her writing is often laugh out loud funny while the descriptions of her darker tribulations are painful and resonant.She has written a one of a kind book; a new genre.I don't have enough accolades. I've heard good information from Meredith Hill, the author, before but I was very disappointed in this. She can do better. For an inexpensive e-book I don't expect there to be a lot of good, juicy, how to details but I did expect some actionable tips. This was based on a presentation I've heard her give before and it is a "free talk" sort of thing. I can only expect that Ms. Hill is using one of the latest marketing gimmicks of "take a weekend and whip out a quick book to publish on Kindle, agree to publish it exclusively on Kindle for a set amount of time and get the ability to offer it for free on certain days, ask everyone in your community to 'buy' it the day it's free (usually including some sort of free gift with 'purchase' or a contest entry to be sure lots of them do it on that day) and then as long as a hundred or two or them 'buy' it for free, you get to call yourself a "best selling author" even though you didn't actually sell any books." Seeing that the names of most of the glowing review all posted on the same days are the people enrolled in her group programs, I'm fairly certain that is the case. The fact that she chose to buy into that gimmick and then do so by publishing something that has so little content and is basically a "dump" of a powerpoint presentation she's been giving for years makes me lose respect for her as a marketer. Had she taken the time to write a real book, something more than a 30some pages with a lot of white space, I would feel differently. Just know that if you use any of the "helpful resources" included, what you are doing is giving her your email address so she can contact you often to sell you her $797 program. I would be more likely to look at purchasing the program if I felt she was showing solid marketing in what she does. The fact that she relied on a gimmick using a poorly written, thrown together booklet does not give me confidence that she would give me solid marketing advice for my business.

I have never in my life written a review of a book, but I'm so annoyed, I have to. This is essentially a pamphlet with personal stories and a few chapters on Goal Setting 101. There is nothing - NOTHING - about the travel industry. Well, except for the last chapter which is a pitch for her program (which looks to be more of the same? ). Save your money - this charlatan has nothing to say about the travel industry.

There is some good advice. BUT if you want more this book promotes her website on training that costs. So I felt like this was more of her marketing her website and services than help. I guess you got to make money somehow.🤨

It took me months to finish. I put It down because It wasn't exactly exciting to read, and the content was very generalized. Why? Because the last chapter is a sales pitch to get training program. Still, I think I only paid a dollar for this book download and it did give some food for thought on regards to having a successful career selling travel.

I really expected more from this book. I feel it was more of a sales pitch than an informational book. Also, I did find several typos throughout the book.

In the 20 months I've had this book, it has been one of the most frequently off the shelf and in use, and I have quite a few design reference books. I bring it over to my chair to thumb through while letting my mind rove through knotty problems; I use it as a springboard for new designs; I relax with the many pages of patterns. Just yesterday, I pulled it off the shelf again ... having only put it back a few days ago ... when I was looking for inspiration for a diaper using a hexagonal grid. I found several, and got to work.I noticed the previous reviewer down-graded this book for not being in color, but I supply my own colors in my mind when I view the patterns, so that doesn't bother me. In fact, I rather like the black and white, since it gives me a skeleton which I can then fill out or extrapolate from, or not, as I desire.I am in awe of the talent of these 19th century authors, who did not have a smart phone to digitally capture everything they saw, but they put it all down on paper with their own hands and drawing materials. Because they had to deeply see it, and understand it, to get it down right, their drawings are often more useful than a modern snapshot might be.

This books both illustrates and explains various motifs. Very helpful to know the history behind the motif. This simplifies creating new variations of the motif.

Heaps and heaps of patterns, just a little disappointed that they are all in black and white. As it is a book about pattern, and colour plays a HUGE part of this I expected to see some in colour....

This is a decent quality book with quite a lot of different patterns in it. I like the different line widths and styles and the patterns are big enough to actually use without having to expand them and lose the quality of the image. This is an easy book to grab when you need a design idea if you are working with patterns, Pretty impressive for the low price.
