First of all I love Simon Monks books, he is one of the best maker authors out there. However this book is not one of its better efforts. There is a lot of fluff and filler in this short book. There are sections covering basic wiring/C programming conventions like variables, and conditional statements and how to use a breadboard. There are some useful examples but out of the 20 examples 10 are super basic an some are pretty much available in the cloud build IDE environment that you use with the Photon. If you arn't tied to the Photon I would really look into the ESP8266 12-E it has all the functionality, a open environment, and many more available library. I'm not sure why anyone would use a Photon over that device and I have both.

I had a project in mind when I bought a Photon, but I didn't know how to make it all work. The information in this book was exactly what I needed to get my project running. The examples were easy to follow, and I was able to reuse a lot of the code. Overall, I was very pleased with the book, and I'd recommend it to other people looking for a good guide to working with the Photon.

With never using a Photon before, this book was very helpful. I feel like some of the projects in the book were not very practical and needed a lot of extra parts. Fortunately for me I bought it with a specific interest, the "Spark.publish" function. I learned what I needed to and didn't do any of the projects.

Doresse's Exploration of Gnostic Wonders:A masterful entery to Gnosticism; Doresse's book was the first insider's authoritative description of the Egyptian Gnostic writings known as the Chenoboskion Library, discovered near today's Nag-Hammadi, in upper Egypt. This is, no doubt, the best book on rediscovering the roots of Gnosticism in Chenoboskion. Doresse's enthusiasm makes this book an enjoyable reading, even with all the complicated Gnostic thought and philosophical terms. He studied with Togo Mina, a Coptic scholar, then director of the Coptic Museum, under Prof. Pueuch, and was one of the first few with whom Mina consulted. Doresse got the finesse to lead the reader to appreciate the beauty of these writings, explaining their underlying thought clearly, and without bias.Despite the forty five years since its publication, its masterful introduction to Gnosticism and elaborate account of the discovery, and re-acquiring of the smuggled codices keeps it still very vivid. A detailed description of the codices is given, before he starts a discussion of the texts themselves, and what they reveal to him of Gnostic belief and practice, with a special emphasis on the Gospel of Thomas.Previously known to scholars?Before unearthing Chenoboskion library, almost all existing original references on Gnosticism were written in Coptic; including the Askew codex, the Bruce fragments, codex Berolensis that no one knows where did it disappear after the fall of Berlin. These gnostic writings were previously known to scholars, but no one would have expected that such a Gnostic collection, could show up in this great variety. Doresse's personal experience, and excitement over his early participation in these discoveries renders the book brisk and engaging, even if the subject could have been academic and monotonous. Given that most of what we knew about the various sects of Gnostics came from the surviving writings by early Christians Church fathers like Iraeneus, Tertulian, Clement and Origen, the core reality of gnosticism was not distorted but only partly understood, in the light of these apologies. Doresse thoroughly reviews what was known of Gnosticism before these writings were recently unearthed.Doresse analysis of Chenoboskion Marvels:Outlining and discussing those texts previously known in ancient writings, only by title or through brief quotations from writings that has been long thought to be lost, is part of his amazement. He is overwelmed due to the broad spectrum of sources the Gnostics relied on. The library includes, Hermetic Egyptian and Persian manuals as well as a great part of vaguely known but long time lost apocryphal Christian writings and Apocalyptic books. This leads Doresse to confirm his mentor Professor Pueuch theory of Judaic roots of Gnosticism, and would also explain how some scholars comment on the 'more Gnostic sounding passages' of the New Testament.It was also an amusing surprise to find adaptations of earlier known works selectively edited for Gnostic use, renamed, and ascribed to more authorititive writers. No doubt, that the Gnostics adapted some Eastern Church teachings, including descent into Hades, Christ teaches that spiritual knowledge is gained speculatively through meditation on Gnostic scripture, a merit of the few, through a knowing faith, and contemplative prayer. For Gnostics, faith is just the beginning, following the lead of Easterners, whereas for some western Christians, faith in Jesus is their only forensic justification goal.Epilogue: Savior Descent into Hades:'Here, the Chenoboskion manuscript presents a lacuna which the Berlin Codex enables us to fill: the Savior recalls the descent into the lower world by which he is coming to deliver the human creature enslaved to the Archons. "I have struck off the chains...I have broken down the doors of the pitiless and humiliated them...I have revealed to you the name of the Perfect and the whole desire of the mother of the angels. I came to reveal to you that which exists since the beginning. I came because of the pride of the archigenitor and his angels, who say, ' We are gods!' to condemn them by revealing to everyone the God who is above the universe. Trample under foot their sepulchers! let their yoke be broken, that mine may be exalted?" (page 200)

I am in my 40's, well past school and just interested in the social movements of the day. I often hear the term "Critical Theory" associated with the political ideologies of the left. I wanted to find out more about it, bought three books on the subject and this one was the only one that gave me that "Ah Ha" moment in understanding what Critical theory is. I went into this thinking Critical Theory was specifically a way of examining class relations and came out understanding Critical Theory is a way of looking at ALL subjects around us. To get a better understanding of class and race relations I now know which authors to look to and what the "sub-schools" of thought are to which I need to pay attention.

This is a good introduction to a train of thought that has transformed Western thought in the social sciences, while at the same time wreaking havoc by fostering a propensity for obfuscatory bloviation (I would us a harsher word, but don't want to risk getting censored). I earned a PhD in ethnomusicology five years ago, but was initially trained in the early 1970s before this trend became fashionable. I have found that it has become go-to jargon in my field and others, and has important merits. At the same time, it has become something of a fetish in academia, with scholars strutting about trying to demonstrate who is more socially conscious than whom. Nevertheless, academics must fortify themselves with this knowledge, if for no other reason but to make an articulate decision to forego using these ideas as the governing paradigm of one's work. To that end, this is a palatable way to ingest this set of idea. End of rant.

Reading this book is not going to make you an expert on Foucault or Lacan- however, if what you are seeking is an idea as to the spectrum of schools and branches and concerns of "critical theory," or if you're not even terribly sure what "critical theory" IS, then I suggest you pick this book up. When I was just getting started, it really helped me create a "cognitive map" of the field. Basically you get a mapped out schema of the world of critical theory, with a few tantalizing tidbits dropped about some of the thinkers- then it is up to you to go out and get the real books and start reading them. But if you are starting from nothing, and don't even know what you want to read- Donald Rumsfield's "Unknown Unknowns," then start reading this book so you can figure out what your "Known unknowns" are: "I don't know anything about Althusser, but judging on what I read in this book, I now know that I want to study him," etc. I have a few other of the "Introducing" books, and, honestly, the only one I came back to at all frequently was this one. It does not try to "explain" any particular thinker, but to introduce you to a field- I think in this regard I think it is sucessful. It is by no means perfect- for instance, Zizek only gets two teeny little pages- but, again, it is making various "names" available to you, various schools, various strands- Frankfurt school, Deconstruction, Structuralism, Post Marxist, Post Feminist, etc- so that you can go out and get started. I highly recommend this book. I think it is terrific. (Plus the illustrations are great fun!) Critical theory can be a confusing hodge podge of theoretical models- this book will help you on the path.

Worth the $5 paid both to clarify and elucidate any potholes in your philosophy education. This series is truly indispensable in today's world, not just for philosophy heads but for reaching out to the rest of society. The low price really is a part of that equation.

A great guide to critical theory

This book was fun to read. I liked how easily the author managed to reduce whole bodies of work into a sentence or two, which is precisely what I am looking for in these books. I agree with some of the other reviews here that he seems to dwell on Marxism and his influence, but I have always wondered why Marxism gets so much attention among "intellectuals" and this book helps to explain this phenomenon. While I doubt that this book sums up Critical Theory in its entirety, or even comes close, it definitely inspires further readings into the subject (at least it does for me), which is more than I can say for most books. I look forward to reading it again.

I like that this text is broad rather than deep. This is a fine starting point to choose a particular sub-area of critical theory and head down that rabbit hole.

This book is a tidy, small introduction that might help beginning literature students understand basic concepts. The book is not very well-organized, but nevertheless appeals to students because of the style in which it is written.

I recently took up piano again after finishing grade 4 as a child. I started with the Martha Meier jazz books, which are fun, but nobody ever heard of her songs. Then I wanted some real jazz, so I bought this. I would say these are playable if you finished grade 4, though you are definitely going to need to practice a lot. He regularly uses four note chords in the melody and octaves and arpeggios in the left hand. They sound great, although there is a rare note here and there that I wonder if it is a misprint.One thing which I really appreciate is that the book has notes that these old eyes can see, with only 4 or 5 double staffs per page. The books which try to fit in 6 or 7 double staffs are just impossible for me to read any more. This book is also the size of most lesson books, and not the size of a sheet of typing paper like some piano books.My main concern with this book are the 10 note spreads in the left hand on "Ain't Misbehaving". I imagine the majority of female piano players are physically incapable of this. The piece really sounds lush until I get to that part, where it all breaks down. In the past, I have gotten around this in other pieces by making it an arpeggio or playing the upper note of the left hand chord with my right thumb. However, in this case I need my right hand to be playing a chord higher up. Also, I don't have time to arpeggio it while playing eighth notes in the right hand. If anybody has a solution for those of us who can only span an octave, I would appreciate your advice !

This set of favorite jazz pieces is definitely for the high intermediate to advanced pianist, so folks with less skill will find this book something very interesting to work on.I found the harmony and chord progression arranged by Tom Roed to be especially interesting, giving each piece a unique quality that is reminiscent of the sound you get from a good recording of earlier pianists striving to give a Duke Ellington feel in a nice cocktail lounge. I purposely set my keyboard (Korg SV1 88) to an edgy Thelonious Monk-type piano from his earlier recordings. It has a slightly 'woody' with an old upright piano sound that seems to enhance these great melodies in the book: Ain't Misbehavin' Don't Get Around Much Anymore Georgia On My Mind Killing Me Softly With His Song Linus and Lucy Mood Indigo On Green Dolphin Street Over The Rainbow Ribbon In The Sky The Shadow of Your Smile Take Five Taking A Chance On Love The Windmills Of Your Mind You Are The Sunshine Of My Life You Stepped Out Of A DreamNone of the pieces were what I expected. All were delightful, different, and pleasant and each had a unique flavor that I find hard to describe without simply referring you to the sheet music to see for yourself. I think this book is an important set of music that will give you a new approach to oldies that you once thought were poured in a concrete typeset.This is fine edition and I recommend it even if you have a dozen other copies of these titles. This IS different and charming.

I bought this book because many of the titles appealed to me. I would say that I am somewhere between intermediate and advanced level on piano. The arrangements in this book are very chord based....what I refer to as "rhythm piano" style. There are not very many (if any) single note melodic lines in the music, instead the melody is buried into the chords, which make it sort of a chore to play and really sort of monotonous on top of that. Of course, this is just my opinion. These arrangements are the author's interpretation of the songs, not note for note transcriptions, so to rate it as good or bad, is just an opinion. I hate to give it 3 stars but it isn't worth 4 stars in my opinion, because I am a player that likes to play songs with note for note accuracy. If you are like me, you probably will not be happy with the book, but if you are a beginner or intermediate player and learning chords, this book may appeal to you!

I'll buy most anything with Tom Roed's name on the cover! He is a master of harmony, creating a lush sound that is still simple enough for an intermediate pianist with a little patience to master. This book is my new favorite. Because my musical roots date back to the simple harmonies of the late '50s and early 60's, Roed's choice of complex harmonies are a challenge to my ears (and my fingers!). From the sophisticated ooze of a smooth "Ain't Misbehavin'," to a lovely "Somewhere over the Rainbow," to Dave Brubeck's "Take Five" and Stevie Wonder's "You Are the Sunshine of My Life," there's really something here for almost everyone. Tempo and dynamics are clearly marked for those of us unfamiliar with the originals. You might even make friends with music from an era completely outside your comfort zone.

As a pianist who loves jazz and blues, but never learned to improvise very well (I have great sight-reading skills, though, so it all evens out), this is a fun book to play out of! It's intermediate to advanced, so not for the faint of heart.

my wife brought this to her piano teacher, who knew Tom Roed's work. The teacher thought it would be challenging for her. The arrangements have rich chords that are interesting. "The Windmills of your Mind" is the piece she is working on now. There are 15 piano solos including "Over the Rainbow," "Take Five," "On Green Dolphin Street," and "Linus and Lucy." All of the arrangements require some skill and much practice, but it definitely makes a great addition to or beginning for anyone interested in jazz. The price is very reasonable, making it less than $1 for one piano solo arrangement. Buy it if you are serious.

Great variety. I wish it were a higher level but this is great for people to easily pick up and play something on the fly.

Expect higher intermediate level to advanced rather than moving into intermediate level. This is a great book to get if you love jazz and are getting ready to move into advanced technique.

Excellent book! Well written and jam packed full of very current technologies and their implementation in industry. Covers everything from mission analysis and design through to detailed subsystem design highlights with plenty of references listed to take a deeper dive if desired. Great for those who wish to catch up on the latest small satellite technolgy and design strategies or who wish to get a great overview of the satellite design process in general. Most books on this subject are fairly outdated at this point (written in the early 2000’s), but this one was published in 2018 and includes the latest trends and techniques. I will be using this as a reference for some time to come!I highly recommend this book!
