I have truly enjoyed reading Martha's new book "Be the Business" which highlighted where IT leaders shall take their steps forward to keep their role active and add business value in different ways but it all starts with having a full understanding of your business and where it is heading and then to provide the business with IT and technical solutions to fulfill these needs and upon getting that done you are moving from being a fully IT leader of operations to IT leader of business enabler.Driving the business is a new concept and philosophy where IT leaders need to adopt which adds huge challenge on our mindset and how we were raised in the early days of the IT world. Being a driver requires the IT leader not just to understand his/her business but it takes it a bit further by having solid understanding of the world economy, market condition, and the competitors and how to as an IT leader can put all that together and innovate IT solutions to keep your organization always ahead of their game.It is a great book to read, understand, and apply at your workforce before it is too late to change your IT and business mindset.Thank You Martha for the great efforts and for all the IT leaders you have interviewed. You are indeed adding great value to all of us in IT and Business.
I missed some more, detailed frameworks that I could apply. Sometimes there were too many quotes. Also, spends too much time comparing the past and not inventing the future.
Martha Heller is the a league of her own. AMAZING read.
Provides good insights about the role than an IT executive should be playing in this new Digital Era, not too much ideas of how to break the still current C level mentality about the CIO role
I was very excited when I first saw this book as I have enjoyed reading several of Martha's articles on CIO.com. Here is my first take on this book - this book is just a mish mash of various CIO thoughts. Its not very well organized or engaging and I had no desire to read the book. I would start with reading the first page of a chapter and then jump to next chapter until I didnt find any value in reading the book. The chapter topics are all great but content not so well organized. I am hoping to come back to the book with an empty mind at another time as I dont want to miss any insights between the lines. I will update my review later if I find any such valuable insights.
Great outline and roadmap for today's CIO.
Who is accountable for IT in a modern business? What role does IT play? Are boundaries still mixed and thus opportunities being lost? All this and more is considered in this interesting book that looks at the role IT leadership can and should have in a company and what changes IT leaders may need to do to remain relevant in this brave new world.It can sound a dry and esoteric subject to an outsider, but the author has expertly weaved together a host of disciplines, experiences, research and opinion together to make a fascinating, essential book. This is a book that does generate much thought! IT is no longer something confined to the “IT departmentâ€, the world and his dog can have an opinion about IT and how to make it better. Add in the “new media†disciplines such as web design and ecommerce and throw in some industrial automation for good measure and soon there are lot of people trying to stir the IT stew. Larger companies, in particular, still need strategic guidance and leadership for their IT, but the nominal IT head might not be getting the visibility and internal respect that they need and deserve.So this book may help on many levels. It can let the CIO or similar leader evolve their organisation to utilise and integrate all technology within the company and it may let other managers see how they do not need to fear losing part of their domain by cooperating with the IT department. As IT is more and more an integral part of a company’s operational DNA, it is essential that all areas can function efficiently, accurately and support each other.The author is direct. This is not an “instant solution†guide but it does help you work on identifying and formulating a strategy that you can seek to get buy-in with. The book though draws you in (no matter what your job title may be) and it helps focus your thoughts towards the company’s IT operational requirements. It just felt to a powerful, sympathetic and actionable sort of book.It is something that senior management should consider to help them view their company’s operational landscape going forward. For senior IT people, it gives you the benefit of a knowledgeable consultant, mentor and guide by your side. It may be a bit of a specialist read but it is capable of having much broader appeal and impact if you allow it to.
