Review

"'Races of Mankind' staged some strange scenes from a marriage of arts and anthropology."--Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute"Elegantly written and eminently readable, this work deals with an important and very current topic: the history of the social construction of race. Through the case study of Malvina Hoffman's Races of Mankind sculptures, Marianne Kinkel gives us a compelling example of how race has been imaged in art and in museum displays."--Mary Jo Arnoldi, curator of African ethnology and arts at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution  "Covers every detail concerning Malvina Hoffman'sRaces of Mankind--from the artist's career through her extensive preparation to the creation of work and its reception. . . . Kinkel shows how the images contributed to a contentious and mutating discourse on race through the end of the 20th century."Art in America"Kinkel's original research brings to light much archival material, and the amply footnoted text is generously illustrated. . . . As a sculptor I bought this book thinking it would illustrate in more detail the physical characteristics of the races as interpreted by Malvina's sculptures. I was very disappointed to get the book and discover there were a paucity of pictures of her actual sculptural work. It's a good biography and fitting for one of the worlds formost pioneer women in the art of sculpture. Someone needs to put together a photographic collection of the work. This one isn't it ! The Field Museum has enough of her work for a stunning book...but they have not moved on the idea.

If your looking for a book with photographs of Hoffman's work this is not it, theres only a few of them in the entire book and there small. Not worth the hefty price.

Malvina Hoffman (June 15, 1885 - July 10, 1966), was an American sculptor and author, well known for her life-size bronze sculptures of people. This magnificent book by Marianne Kinkel, an associate professor of fine arts at Washington State University, fills a need that has been sorely lacking in art history books and in museum exhibitions - the survey of ethnographic sculpture as a cultural biography. Kinkel presents the astonishing show of 91 of her 147 sculptures by noted sculptor Malvina Hoffman that was staged in 1930 in the Marshall Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. The images Hoffman was commissioned to create (for a sum of $!25,000 in 1929 - a huge sum of money during the Great Depression!) included Bushman Family, Chinese Jinriksha Coolie, Bengali Woman, Sioux Indian Male, among others. The drama of this important body of work is produced in the way Kinkel relates the history of the trials and tribulation of Hoffman in fulfilling her obligations. Hoffman's project was influenced by anthropologists, curators, publisher and critics and for the most part Hoffmann won her battles. There is a particular work that remains controversial to this day - a work titled 'Unity of Mankind' which was supposed to compare and contrast the yellow, black and white races: the museum insisted on the existence of four races - Mongolian, Negroid, Caucasian and Australian Aboriginal. The controversy was heated and Kinkel describes the manner in which this disparate decision took place. Not only is the book rich in illustrative materials, it is even richer in the way Kinkel carries the discussion that began with Hoffman's exhibition and brings us into the ongoing history of racism since that time. This is a book that illuminates the work of an artist too seldom appreciated or exhibited, but it is also a superb treatise on he impact of the visual arts on our perception of racial differences - and likenesses. Kinkel introduces the work of Carrie Weems, John De Andrea, Kehinde Wiley, Lorna Simpson and Glenn Ligdon to allow the reader to see how the visual representation of races still captures our imagination and respect today. This is a solid book with art at its core, but it is also a biography of our times, a book that addresses many more aspects of human perception making it a book that should be required reading for all students of social science. 'Races of Mankind: The Sculptures of Malvina Hoffman examines how the veracity of race is continually renegotiated through collaborative processes involved in the production, display, and circulation of visual representations.' Grady Harp, November 11

Verdict: A potentially good crime story gradually loses believability because of a misleading title, sloppy writing and an impossible point of view.1. In the first chapter, the author says Ken and Barbara fled Aberdeen for a town where no one would know about their affair, a place to start over. "They found that place in the north town of Moree and he easily found work in the local slaughterhouse with the same jovial manner..." But in the next paragraph, the author describes Ken as the prodigal son, and that while Barbara may have lost touch with most of her friends and family, "the Knights were still a presence in Moree." So this new town of Moree is now Ken's hometown. Which are we supposed to believe? The author has already majorly mislead us.2. Now we realize the author is a flat out liar. This is not a cannibalism story.3. The next major mistake we find is that it soon becomes very hard for the reader to distinguish Barbara and Katherine, because of the author's poor grammar. Here is an example. After pages and pages of telling us how Barbara is abused by Ken we get this paragraph: "Before long, she was rescuing injured animals and nursing them back to health in her room at home. She was fiercely defiant when Ken tried to take them away from her, to the point that she was able to make the brutal patriarch back down and let her tend to her wounded animals in peace." Actually, he is talking about Katherine here. The read becomes too confusing to follow.4. The story feels crammed into a shorter book than it need be. There are no supporting footnotes and only casual mentions of the context. The author never informs us that story is set in Australia at all. But there is a reference to 'Australian men' 30 or so pages in. A proper true crime story goes out of its way to underscore the facts, to impress that this is real, whereas this author treats the subject like a National Inquirer Story. It could be real, but is it?Conclusion: A riveting crime story gradually loses credibility because of the author's mistakes and - not to mention - the impossible point of view that occurs often, when no one could possibly know what happened except a dead person.

This could have been worthwhile if the author didn't put forth such great effort to what is actually a tawdry low class work. Perhaps a thesaurus might be of value.

The story is intriguing because it reveals the making of a killer--a very sad story of countless abuses and addictions. Makes me realize I am glad NOT to have lived in Australia! I found myself feeling sorry for the townspeople because their lives were so dreary. Horrible existence. It's no wonder people could be so depressed, succumbing to addictions and mental issues. While the story unwinds, we learn about a woman's despicable life of torture: the torture she inflicted and the torture of mental illness that she felt. Crazy ending.

Being from the U.S., I had never heard about this story before. What always amazes me is how the mental health and criminal justice systems worldwide miss so much when dealing with persons like the woman featured in this book. While not everyone with a horrific childhood will grow up to be a someone who preys on others, there are enough correlations when studying past cases to know that this is a common trait. Our systems for protecting children need vast improvements. I have read some of this authors other books and have enjoyed them, as I did this one. If you like true crime, you should like his work. For those that are not sure or have never read true crime, be forewarned that these books are graphic and don't gloss over the details. I plan on reading more of this authors work.

It may be a true story about a crazy woman but it is not about a cannibal eating men. She did assault men and killed one but didn't eat him.

This book kept me awake at night, not being able to stop reading. Ryan Green has become my favorite author, with his ability to pull you into the story and make you feel like you’re watching it happen in front of your own eyes. Be ready to be shocked and on the edge of your seat with this book.

This was the first book I've read by this author but it definitely won't be the last. After reading the book I googled Katherine Knight and was amazed at how beautifully, eloquently and accurately written it was based on the true facts. There were a few small discrepancies but nothing that detracted from the story. This was a truly scary book by the mere fact that it was based on a real person and a true story. I absolutely love true crime novels and this was definitely one of the best I've ever read. Thanks Ryan Green and I look forward to more of your writing in the future.

This was a very well written true crime story about a gruesome crime that occurred in Australia. I've read another book about this crime as well, however this one the author brings you right into the story, almost feels like you are there. I definitely recommend this one!

I found the actual content of the book both interesting and entertaining. I'm not an aficionado though,so I can't speak to how well-known the chosen infographics might be to someone with more than a passinginterest in the subject.I was however more than a little annoyed at the poor print setting. The binding of the book prevents it frombeing opened wide enough to fully see the infographics that cross the center line. This meant that it wasdifficult to impossible to read text that happened to cross over the center (is it called the gutter?).I'd say this affected about 30% of the infographics and was annoying enough that I found myself wonderinghow this kind of oversight could happen.Sadly, I bought the physical version because the reviews on the kindle version say that the images are toosmall to enjoy, so I can't even suggest that alternative. When are publishers going to solve the problem of formatting image-heavy books for tablets and e-ink devices?

I love this book and would rate it higher if only I could see the graphics without a magnifying glass. A larger book (physical size) would have made this book incredible.

This lovely book was on the front porch as I returned home last night. It was 3 hours before I put it down. There are some very well done data visualizations here. One in particular on a better food label was great on showing how to look at the information from a completely different perspective. And covers a broader range of data in a more succinct space. Loved it.While at times the content of some specific data visualizations wasn't relevant to me, it didn't matter. The author did a great job of choosing such a diverse group of infographics to show. I was always drawn in to learn something about how I can better present things in my projects as a designer. His choice for the star of the book was spectacular and informative. This book will be one that remains within reach when I struggling and need a jumping off point to decide how I will present data. Let's hope our future looks much more like this book and much less like an excel bar chart.

I liked this book very much as I am a visual person and anytime I can look at a picture instead of reading a text I will jump at the opportunity. I give the book four stars for the overall beauty of the designs and also for the very informative Forward by Gareth Cook and Introduction by David Byrne. Please read both the Forward and Introduction as they are very illuminating. The designs range from the powerfully simple (Gun Ownership Rates by Country – pp. 86-89) to the very complex (Political Moneyball – pp. 144-145) and are divided into three sections: You, Us, and The Material World. There is also a separate section for the Top 10 Interactive Graphics (selected by Eric Rodenbeck).I reserve giving the fifth star because some of the infographics are reduced to such a small size as to be virtually unreadable. Even accounting for the massive size of Influence: A Brief History (pp. 54-59) by extending it into a fold-out page, the size of the type remains extremely small. As a graphic, it’s beautiful; as information, it’s useless.I also reduced my rating to four stars because the interactive section never defines that term although Mr.Rodenbeck hints at a definition by referring to the ability to “pan and zoom.” What makes a graphic interactive? I take it to mean that these infographics must be viewed online in order to appreciate the way the variables interact with each other over time (pan and zoom?), but again, that is just my guess. Being what it is, a static medium with a limited physical dimension, the book freezes the motion of the graphics and sometimes shrinks them to near illegibility (no zooming). To the book’s credit, a link is provided to the publisher’s website where these graphics may be seen in their interactive form. For the rest of the “non-interactive” graphics that constitute the majority, while there are no direct links to them on the publisher’s website, each infographic includes its online reference. The few references I took the trouble to look up were still accessible even late in 2013. By the way, many of these online sources are “interactive.”

Infographics are a good way to convey complex information in a way that is memorable. Although I love graphs and other visuals, I do believe that Infographics are an important step in breaking through the clutter of digital and non-digital communication. While the infographics in this book are sometimes shown in a reduced size (making the print/pictures tiny) as others have said, I believe that you can still get the inspiration needed to communicate in a new way. I can still recall that the Shar-Pei is more closely related to the wolf than is the German Shepherd. These are among the most detailed infographics I have seen---so the style may be more for the data hounds among us (no pun intended). If you are looking for a book to show you how to take complex informaiton and show it in "3 steps" (another important type of infographic), this is not the book that will serve that purpose, in my opinion. That said, I am glad I have this at hand to serve as inspiration.

Love this book!I like the graphical representations! As a researcher, I always tried to convey my research more effectively. This book inspires me to think of creative and effective ways to convey information. Some graphs are small and way too complicated but they are still useful.I have not emulated any graphs yet but I look forward to doing so soon :D

Content is laid out over the center crease. Bad layout of images and book is already fall apart to a degree.

I was hoping to get this book for my 2 year old who was visiting the dentist for the first time. This book is great, very colorful, but is very very wordy. Too much reading for a 2 year old's attention span. I also wasn't thrilled with them bringing up the idea that going to the dentist can hurt...so if you are looking for a book to get your child used to the idea of the dentist, I wouldn't recommend this one at all. But if you have a child that needs dental work done (like a cavity filled), then this book would be fine as this is what the book is about, the Big Bad Wolf getting his tooth fixed.

cant wait to be able to let my child read before his next appt

Purchased for a four-year old new to this country and dentists on the recommendation of someone else. Did not give this to the child.

Story too wordy and complex for age group targeted.

We love this book! My 2 year old was so proud because when he went to the dentist he thought it was great that he sat in the chair and got to go through a treasure chest just like Elmo did in the book! The book is well written and a great way to prepare your child for their first visit to the dentist. It really helped to decrease any anxiety about that first trip. I plan to read it a lot more before his next appointment as well to ensure he's not stressed when going back to the dentist. Highly recommended!

My 23 month old daughter loves Elmo, so this was a good book along with a few others to help prepare her for her first dentist trip. Although she likes it, it is targeted for a little older audience. She prefers "ready set brush" with Elmo as it is interactive.

Just okay. Don't love it. Story is long and not the most entertaining. If I had seen it in person, I wouldn't have purchased it.

My son relates his own dentist visits to this book and I think it really helps him realize that EVERYONE needs to go to the dentist.
