I gave myself free rein, writing both on some of my own experiences and on the common background of family members and friends between, and around, World War I and World War II. With this in mind, I recall life in a Lithuanian shtetel; then in Berlin, Switzerland, and intermittently in other countries, including the United States and Israel. I have tried to convey the general climate and atmosphere of all these places at the time, as well as personal episodes. The stories are primarily about my own and other Jewish families migrating from the shtetel into the outside world. They tell about young people growing up under such circumstances, exposed to constant readjustments and dangers.

This was an engaging read. I've know that people have consumed milk for a long time and I enjoyed reading the various sources that Schmid offered. The history of pasteurization was fascinating. I'm extremely curious what the best research has to say about diet and health and have spent much of the last couple of years studying the subject. There are many conflicting claims made by various authors. Some have solid science behind them. Some, like this, don't. Some of the conclusions the author reached were, ah, interesting.Is milk healthy? The jury is still out. I have no doubt that Mr. Schmid's assertion that organically raised pasture fed cows, that have not been subjected to bovine growth hormone (BGH), pesticides, and antibiotics produce a vastly healthier product than the ordinary grocery store milk most of us know. I can also believe that raw milk contains more beneficial enzymes and vitamins than pasteurized milk. But is even the best raw milk healthy for humans?This is another partisan shot in the war between food factions. This is pro-milk, which, I have to say makes this book is extremely Northern European, or East African centric, when it proclaims that milk is the perfect food. Basically, most of the world's population is intolerant of lactose (milk sugar). According to USA Today "Somewhat less than 40% of people in the world retain the ability to digest lactose after childhood. The numbers are often given as close to 0% of Native Americans, 5% of Asians, 25% of African and Caribbean peoples, 50% of Mediterranean peoples and 90% of northern Europeans."While this was an interesting read, I barely got past the preface written by Sally Fallon, which is so blatantly full of falsehoods that I almost didn't get to the main text of the book. Specifically she claims that cultures that don't eat milk and are healthy eat lots of organ meats. The residents of Okinawa, who have the highest life expectancy in the world subsist mainly on sweet potatoes, vegetables, seaweed, fish and rice. The residents of Crete, after whom the Mediterranean diet was named, also ate relatively little in the way of meat of any kind, and there's no mention of organ meat in any of the studies I've read about them. Ms. Fallon is the head the Weston A. Price Foundation, an advocacy group that promotes raw foods, especially milk, and seems bent on spreading dirt against soy.Mr Schmid, a naturopath, not an MD, pretty much lost me when he stated that all mammals thrive on the milk from any other species of mammal, which is patently not true. Every species produces different milk. The healthiest milk for any species is made by that species' females. The there's the fact that he doesn't believe in the germ theory of illness. Give me a break. This is not an objective scientist, but someone who has an agenda. Most of his so-called evidence was totally anecdotal. No double blind studies for Schmid. No careful surveys of large populations. Again, I'll believe some of his assertions, namely that a person who has good digestive health and eats a diet rich in various whole food substances will be more resistant to disease than one eating the typical American diet. But, it's a long way from there to believing that germs don't cause disease. With his credibility already out the window, I was incredibly curious what he would say about those who don't think that adult humans should drink milk.His so-called critiques of the many scientific studies with which he disagrees are laughable. As someone who has done research while earning two graduate degrees, I was appalled. I doubt that his arguments would earn a passing grade in any current science program. His agenda is obvious, and the studies he supposedly shoots down, including T. Colin Campbell's "China Study" are good science. I have more faith in Dr. Campbell, who started out working for the dairy industry and was grudgingly convinced by his data, than Dr. Schmid, who decided that milk made him healthy when he was young, then went looking for evidence to support his presupposition. There's no agenda here, just careful science.Besides, Campbell's work The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted And the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss, And Long-term Health, there are other good scientific studies that correlate the ingestion of animal protein, including milk, with a number of bad health outcomes. One is Dr. Dean Ornish's Program for Reversing Heart Disease: The Only System Scientifically Proven to Reverse Heart Disease Without Drugs or Surgery. Another is Dr. Neal Barnard's Program for Reversing Diabetes: The Scientifically Proven System for Reversing Diabetes without Drugs. There are many more by the likes of Drs Caldwell B. Esselstyn Jr. and Joel Fuhrman. Books by them are also available on Amazon.To be fair, there are some smaller and more recent studies that indicate that high protein, animal based diets can be heart healthy. They haven't had the longitudinal duration of the plant based diets, nor the large study numbers. Mostly they rely on lab results, which sometimes don't survive the translation to real life results. Just think of oat bran, vitamins E, C and D, that have all shown good lab results but haven't stood the test of real life use. However, the so-called paleo or caveman diets are developing a big following. They may prove to be viable. Try The Paleo Solution: The Original Human Diet, or The Primal Blueprint: Reprogram your genes for effortless weight loss, vibrant health, and boundless energy (Primal Blueprint Series). Do note that although these authors share some of the whole/raw food slant that Schmid proposes, they specifically suggest avoiding milk.The field of nutrition is in flux. Competing theories vie for top dog. It may be that competing approaches avoid the same, as yet, unidentified bad foods and that any whole food based diet will promote health. It may be that one day we will laugh at all the current diets. Do we know how healthy animal protein is? No. It may be that some meat or dairy is good for some people. Do the statistically healthiest people live total vegan lifestyles? No, just mostly. Is any one diet best for everyone? No. Is the last word in? Absolutely not. The Untold Story of Milk certainly isn't it.

I was born a dairy farmer (no herd att). I know a lot of biochemistry, chemistry, and natural science. This book brings many ideas together which make sense. This book is as much about nutrition as milk. People do not know what real food tastes like. Everything we eat is processed or grown without diversity in a commercial system. A real tree ripened peach, tomato or plum is a world away from what is picked green and presented at extremely high costs in the retail stores. We eat sterile tasteless items that masquerade having the appearance of what is presented naturally. I cannot drink the plastic store bought milk and I seek out the farmers selling the raw, real milk which my youngest daughter says tastes like drinking ice cream (from Jersey cows). We buy the raw cow's milk during the months our goats are dry. We hope to get a few cows. The inconvenience of raising a garden, chickens, goats and cows is huge, but having natural, healthy, good tasting food is a large part of living a good life with hopefully good health. All young parents should read this book. Take the time to prepare good food from good ingredients raised by small, local farmers or grow the food yourself with good practices. Good meat and milk comes from happy animals raised by caring farmers in a healthy environment. The best food comes from heirloom seeds which produce complex and unique fruits and vegetables having natural DNA in their heritage. I am coming to believe that processed milk and un-natural ingredients in food has caused much of the disease from which we suffer (diabetes, heart disease, autism, Crone's, gluten intolerance etc... ). Good food is on the endangered list, completely unavailable to city people and hard to come by in even rural areas. By all means read this book!

I just finished reading this book. I have read several books on keeping family cows which briefly touched on some of the myths about raw milk and how unsafe it supposedly is; however, this book goes in depth to explain how raw milk, a product that has been utilized by mankind down through the centuries, came to labeled by many in our government and commerce as unsafe and how the regulations currently surrounding the production and sale of milk are detrimental on so many levels.It was a real eye opener in many respects, especially when comparing the practices of city dairies a few hundred years ago, which led to the illness - and sometimes death - of its consumers, to the massive commercial dairies in operation currently. It is clear we have come full circle with many of these practices that are not only bad for the cattle, but also diminishes the nutritional value of milk and benefits that cattle when sustainably managed can provide to the environment - from helping to build topsoil to sequestration of carbon dioxide and beyond.History, as well as my own experience, proves cattle are a valuable asset to the environment, but man in his quest for wealth is mismanaging these animals and thus creating environmental disasters in many instances. Who in their right minds ever thought taking cattle out of their natural environment, away from life giving sunlight and access to green pastures, cramming hundreds or even thousands of them on a few acres of land and injecting them with hormones and antibiotics - treating them as a commodity instead of a living, breathing creature - would allow cattle to thrive and produce a quality product for sale - whether it be for milk or meat?Read the book and you will understand why it is time for the American public to demand access to raw milk from pastured cattle once again...both for the sake of the environment and for the health of ourselves and our families. The milk available in grocery stores is not the health-enhancing raw milk our ancestors had available to them, but it should be.

I don't have a saltwater aquarium, yet. I bought this book to familiarize myself with it;, to see if I ever really want to set one up. I've had freshwater tanks regularly since 1999; other tanks since 1979. I currently own a 55gal, 10gal and a 5.5gal quarantine tank, which are cycling. I've read other books on the subject that don't stand up as well, as far as the knowledge contained. This book covers it all: from choosing a tank, setting it up and it delves into that often confusing topic of the nitrogen cycle or cycling. It even gives bio information on the fish and invertebrates to stock your tank. All in all, this is a great book to have.This book made the overwhelming understandable for me. I still don't know whether I want to set up a saltwater tank. Saltwater aquariums require more equipment and the tank environment isn't as forgiving, but if and when I do, this will be the book I refer to. I highly recommend it for new and seasoned saltwater aquarists to have on your shelf.

I work for a major pet store, and this book was required reading to get a grasp on the saltwater systems. Written by a marine biologist, I find it's one of the best books on the market for understanding the basics of the salt water setup. Saltwater Aquariums for Dummies walks you through FOWLR (Fish Only With Live Rock) setups and coral/reef setups, describes different kinds of filters and protein skimmers, explains the nitrogen cycle, and gives some basic insight to the different needs of fish, invertebrates, and other marine denizens. I recommend this book to anyone interested in how saltwater aquariums work, whether they're setting up a tank or not. Before you buy a tank, a stand, filter, or water, buy the book!

I became interested in saltwater aquariums as a complete novice and the prospect of setting up the aquarium was both exciting and intimidating. I am a big fan of the "... for Dummies" series as beginner guides for personal hobbies. This book was extremely helpful in both the content and the organization of the information. The author provides practical advice on everything from choosing fish to maintaining water quality. I completed the book feeling I had a solid start on my dream of having a salt water aquarium. It is a must-have for beginner salt water aquarium enthusiasts.

I am a big fan of the "for dummies" series. While, I got some information out of this book, I felt as of it was a bit outdated and the information wasn't sufficient enough. I would recommend it to someone who is very new to the hobby but I wouldn't use it as your only source. I would also recommend you read the book by a computer so you can look up the fish and equipment discussed since the book doesn't provide very good visuals.

I'm a new aquarist. I bought 8 marine aquarium books from Amazon. I consider this one of the top books of the group and easily the easiest to read with a nice balance of information versus technical discussion. Not perfect, but definitely the one that I ended up making up my list of things I still needed to do. Not overly technical, as many of the books are. Easy read. Author is as good at writing as he is at being a marine biologist. Not perfect, but close. Could use some updating on lights and other areas, where the author either doesn't discuss the newest, better technology, or just barely covers it. I wish marine life discussions included color photos (instead of black and white drawings) and more pictures of different marine life. I'm already a big fan of the Dummies books and I always buy one when I'm trying to learn something new. This book is an excellent example of why everyone interested in new subject should by a Dummies book as part of their knowledge investigation.

This book is AWESOME!! Incredibly helpful and packed full of valuable information. Clear and well written, this book is (in my opinion) a must have for anyone passionate about saltwater aquariums, whether you are just starting out with your first tank, or otherwise.

I used to keep freshwater tribal fish. I've always been way of venturing in to meeting saltwater tanks. This book removed a lot of that fear. I had to move to another state than my university in order to take care of an ailing relative and was unable to complete my thesis, due to the absence of my advisers. I purchased this book so as to give me a better idea as to how to organize my materials and compile my information, for when I am able to get back to the writing experience at the university. I figure that even though this is an older version of the book, it will be helpful for anyone who is actively involved with their thesis work, as they will have plenty of other materials available from their instructors, the school of their major, the library, etc. So, what I am trying to say is that, for the money, it appears to be a good aid for someone getting ready to, or who is actively involved in writing their thesis.

This book is filled with so much useful information on all of the ins and outs of writing a master's thesis that I cannot imagine how anyone could write without it. It answers all of the questions you did not even know you had about search engines and exactly how each chapter has to be structured and how to put all of the chapters together. I am just in the beginning stages of writing my thesis but I am certainly glad that I have this book as my companion on the journey.

My son is in graduate school and just starting to write his Masters thesis. I asked different college instructors what I could provide him with to help him to conceptualize, structure, research, and write this thesis. This book was one of those resources. He is very pleased with it.

Great book, however it will be much better if the examples divided fairly between qualitative and quantitative methods. For there are few examples for qualitative method.

Seems to be great help but I unfortunately don't need it for what I'm doing right now except for maybe a reference guide.

This is a useful book and it's helping me especially in the statistics description, every director and student should have it. I strongly recommend it. The author has the quality of describing every single step in such a clear way that makes your work flow. Congratulations to the author, I really appreciate her job.

There might be some spoilers in this review: Read at your own risk.What didn't I like: 1) I got so tired of hearing about the dinner. That had to be the longest dinner party in the history of the world. 2) We get that she fell for her teacher, but there was never any mention of thoughts of suicide. That seemed to come out of nowhere. We are in the character's head for the entire book. Why not mention some suicidal thoughts? 3) Who is her husband? How did they meet? He seemed to be just there. 4) OMG the ending was awful. Left hanging as if she didn't know how to end the book. 4) How could the prof be nice to her on the phone after what she did? Please! 4) How many times must we hear about God? I ended up skimming much of the latter parts of the book.One of the few books my book club agreed was awful. Everyone hated it. So, purchase this one at your own risk...Oh, yes and the title? Where did that come from. What did I miss? Yeah there are three women but Mona hardly appears. Strange.

Now and then when you finish a book, you get that warm feeling inside, that feeling of love and gratitude for an author who has been able to draw you into the life of another person, to explore the background and thoughts of someone from a totally different culture and upbringing, in a way that can help explain and explore some of your own deep thoughts and idiosyncrasies regarding God, religion, deep cultural beliefs, the immature jealousies of our youth, uncontrollable young love and attraction, the reasons you perhaps sometimes failed, ran, did things based on your parent's expectations, and then the effects these sometimes poor decisions have on your life going forward.I would compare certain elements of this book with some of may favorites over the years: "Narcissus and Goldmund" by Hermann Hesse, "And the Mountains Echoed" by Khaled Hosseini, "My Brilliant Friend" series by Elena Ferrante , and even "Sea of Poppies" by Amitov Ghosh.In each of these similar and well written coming of age stories, we see the effects of the culture, the upbringing, the interaction with schoolmates and close friends, the prevailing philosophies and different school teachers, mentors and religious beliefs. Over time, each character reacts and grows into the adult person with all of their strengths and weaknesses.Elif has accomplished this in such a compelling and great way. We end up having great respect and love for each of the three directions that the three muslim friends take, the theist, the atheist and the agnostic. I think I loved this about the book the most.If you had a great time in college, wish now that you'd've been even more diligent, had a few professors who challenged some of your core beliefs, and hopefully helped you out of your protected little world and open to brilliant ideas from multiple sources, I think you'll enjoy this book even more.I'm glad I found this author. I've heard of a few of her other books and now I'll read some of them. She is brilliant, her writing is crystal clear, well organized, her insight into human relationships and how real life operates is amazing. This was a five plus Goodread for me. Thanks to Elyse and Michael for their glowing five star reviews.

Exceptional novel of life as it was and as it is. A love of her Istanbul in all of its complexities as portrayed by as Peri's family circa 2000 and contrasted with her life in 2016. Profound questions of faith and hatred are presented through the lives of Shafak's 3 Daughters of Eve. Caught in between the love of learning and ideas and the search for truth Peri is confronted by her past in 2016 Istanbul. Many questions are left unanswered as I believe as a reflection of Shafak's own inability to find the answers. Modern life is not simple. A blessing and a curse. It is all that we have. Be blessed in it.

Must admit I kept turning pages, so it must have held my interest. I was a bit disappointed at the story's resolution, but then, I didn't write the book. Elif Shafak is always worth a read; my favorites of her title are "The Bastard of Istanbul" and "The Flea Palace."

I purchased a bread machine so we could start eating healthier breads. I wish I'd read through all the reviews before purchasing this book so I would have read the warnings about gluten in the recipes.. I was really excited to get this book, but so disappointed when I started flipping through the recipes and kept seeing gluten in every single recipe! The only ones that don't have gluten are the few recipes for gluten free breads in the book.. Gluten is one of the biggest things we want to cut out, so obviously, I won't be using any in these recipes.. Not sure how the breads will turn out without it, but I'll try at least one.. I had purchased a Betty Crocker bread machine book and there isn't one recipe in that book that calls for Gluten.. I'm not really sure why the author of this book feels it's so important to add to all the recipes, but if you're like me and want to cut Gluten out of your diet as much as possible, skip this book and purchase the Betty Crocker bread machine cook book..

Yes, w book is packed with lots of recipes for your bread machine, but should you buy it? If I had it to do over again, I wouldn't buy it. Although the recipes are great, I just wanted basic bread machine recipes. If all you want are basic bread recipes, the King Arthur Flour website has a wide variety of bread and dough recipes available for FREE. If, however, you want a larger variety of recipes and more in depth explanations of the art of bread-making, this is the book for you.

This cookbook has made me a successful breadmaker in quick order. I made 2 recipes that came with my Oster breadmaker recipe book, but when I received this book, I've only used recipes from it. It is 600+ pages of recipes & info necessary for successful breadmaking, even at 8500 ft where I live. The author talks about bread machines, ingredients, techniques, she walks you thru your 1st loaf, using a starter, delay timer, high altitude baking, troubleshooting & how to fix problems.The recipes are arranged as: Daily Breads: White & Egg Breads; Earth's Bounty: Whole Wheat, Whole Grain & Specialty Flour Breads; Traditional Loaves: Country & Sourdough Breads; All Kinds of Flavors: Made with Garden Produce, Orchard & Dairy; Pizzas & other Flatbreads; Sweet Loaves: Chocolate, Fruit & Other; No-Yeast Quick Breads; Jams, Preserves & Chutneys; Appendix 1: Crumbs, Croutons, Crostini & Toasted Appetizers; Appendix 2: Spreads, Butters, Cheeses & Veggies to eat with your Bread! How's that for all-encompassing!The tabs I've put in my book for quick access (I haven't bought bread since I got my machine & this book a month ago):Cuban bread, Burger/Hotdog buns, Pasta, 3-Seed WW, Pretzels, Whole Grains, Sennebec Bread, Sourdough, Pizza, Flatbread, Breakfast, Holiday, Portuguese, Quick, Cranberry Tea Bread. Favorite recipes are 9-Grain Honey Bread, Pizza dough, Portuguese Sweet Bread which I've given as gifts, whole wheat dinner rolls (my favorite for texture & flavor), Pumpkin Challah, Morning Sicky Buns (cinnamon rolls), Rose Rolls (to die for), I could go on & on.Since I'm at high altitude, I use a little more gluten, more or less yeast depending on other ingredients (read the book), & sub a lot of whole wheat flour & oat bran for health. A few recipes I won't make again: Banana Oatmeal bread tasted like sandwich bread w/hint of banana (good but not what expected), Zucchini Bread, also good dinner bread but not for dessert, & Irish Potato Brown bread was bland. But many more recipes I tried I put 4 1/2 or 5 stars next to & I'm looking forward to trying so many more.

The only thing that would make this book better: measurements given in grams instead of cups. I've been using this bread machine cookbook since it was published, which means I've made almost every variety of loaf. As someone who bakes often, I use a scale and find it gives the most accurate results. Calculating this book's recipes into weights instead of volumes is way beyond my abilities and probably for an expert baker only.I've experienced difficulty with the fruit & nut breads not baking properly/rising properly, but have only attempted those recipes one time each, and then only one or two recipes - even a frequent baker can make errors with recipes, so I'll have to become more familiar with how to judge the dough as it's being kneaded in order to make any liquid/dry ingred. adjustments. I haven't tried making pasta or jams, so can't speak about how they turn out, nor have I made pizza dough.This book is massive in size, and it can be difficult to find specific loaves or information pages - if you don't remember the exact name of a loaf, forget about using the index, ditto the headline pages and other special sections.I've got so many dog-eared pages, marked with dates, any recipe adjustments, comments about crust and crumb, and my husband's 'loves' - that my copy looks almost hexagonal, lol. I've made our favorites many, many times as well as explored different loaves nearly every week, and 98% turn out perfectly. I use a Zojirushi Virtuoso bread machine - a machine I highly recommend for the shape of the loaves, 1 1/2 & 2 lb. loaf size options, variety of settings, and ease of use. I've had this machine as long as I've had the Bread Lover's Bread Machine Cookbook, only replacing the loaf pan once.
