Rybet Waise is the notorious protege of Master Bloodeye the 'ruler' of the pond, a desolate area of the capital city. Trained from the time she was five, Rybet is a master pickpocket, criminal, and mercenary. When her trainee is taken by guards, Rybet sneaks into the royal palace to rescue him. Caught, a quick deception puts Rybec in competition with other young aristocratic women for the prince's heart. Years ago the kingdom was ruled by Queens wielding magic but when the last Queen was murdered and her daughter disappeared, rulers from a nearby kingdom filled the vacant throne. Now the eldest prince is set to take the throne and the ancient Royal Trials have been revived to find him a wife. Divided into three trials; botany and alchemy, combat, and history and politics, the trials will narrow down the kingdom's most elite ladies until only one is left. Three weeks at the most since Rybet plans to get herself dismissed from the competition quickly. But a binding oath, a deadly truth, and a not so veiled threat from Master Bloodeye, and Rybet finds herself in a dangerous position. Rybet is no more, Lady Callaluna is who she is now. And she must win the trials at all costs. She's surrounded by enemies, a few new allies, and is determined to make the Royals pay.Imposter is sensational. It's like a great summer blockbuster that you just can't get enough of and you want to see (read) over and over. Tate James has created one of the most enchanting adventures I have encountered in quite a while. Irresistible characters and a fantastic premise full of secrets so cleverly written it is immediately addicting. Intrigue, deceptions, suspense, danger, sexiness. Hidden identities, questionable motives, dangerous games. Three trials, one beautiful, intelligent, snarky, irreverent female, 3 sexy princes each with their own secrets, a lethal court, and a viper. I was enthralled from the beginning to the scream-inducing cliffhanger. I am in love with this new series!

This book is so good. It grips you from the beginning. You will find yourself not wanting to put the book down. You need to use the bathroom? Take your e-reader with you.Your kids need to eat? That's what cereal is for.House chores? That can totally wait.Partner wants attention? Ignore them. What you will need when you start reading this book:~Snacks~Wine (or drink of choice)~Sturdy lock on your door (To keep kids and partners out)~Set food and snacks out for the crumbsnatchers.Your mind will be blown, the secrets are unraveling, the real villains are exposed. Who will win? This was a one click for me and it should be for you too.

SPOILER-ISH: You've been warned! So, I stayed up until 2 AM finishing this book. Ask me if I regret it? Nope! Rybet aka Callaluna blew me away. She is an amazing heroine. She’s tough but not stupidly obstinate which is the downfall of some of these mediocre RH series being produced with little thought to how the character would believable react to situations. Of course, like any RH series “The Royal Trials” has insta-attraction, an irresistible heroine and gorgeous heroes. I did appreciate that the heroes did not fall too much into the stereotypical RH formula. Lee is the sensitive hero, but not a doormat for the heroine either. Ty has a rough and gruff exterior with the soul of a big teddy bear. He’s just flirty enough without coming off as a playboy. Zan is probably the most dominant member of a RH series I’ve read. Zan can be withdrawn and prickly, but I loved that he also isn’t a massive jerk that the heroine is constantly fighting with. They have some sexy power struggle going on, but he doesn't make me want to slap the heroine for liking him. I really liked that the author didn’t try to detract from their budding relationship by bringing in past love interest drama or sexual history. I loved that even though Callaluna doesn’t realize it Lee, Ty and Zan in their hidden prince identity are still loyal to her. The chemistry is explosive and well thought out. You could sense the natural progression of their relationships. It was believable. I do hope we will get some of the heroes POV in the next 2 books. I’d love to know what they’ve been experiencing and there perception/feelings for Callaluna. The world building was excellent. There were a few times it became a little wordy and convoluted, but thankfully that was only a few pages. I also loved that we were given villains that I could genuinely hate. Please don’t get me started on the king. Someone please overthrow that dude! AND the King’s Snake gave me the creeps every time he was in a scene. He’s going to be a BIG problem. This story drew me in from the first page. I think we can all guess who Callaluna/Rybet really is, but the unknown of how she will overcome all the obstacles and discover her magic will have me one-clicking this entire series. I became invested in this story and can hardly wait to see the follow up because what a cliffhanger. Way to leave a girl hanging Ms. James!

Javy was there, ..right in the middle of the glorious run the Braves had in the 90's, on into the 21th Century! He really tries to give his experiences in clear, concise terms that the reader can relate to. He individually mentions many of the players that he played with, and describes his relationship with them. This is a pleasant book to read for anyone, but if you were a Braves fan during those great years - you will love this story.I just finished the new John Smoltz book prior to reading Javy's book, and can honestly recommend both to any Braves fan, or anyone interested in reading a book abut a professional athletes life. Both authors tell of their personal lives, and how playing professional sports while maintaining a family can be very challenging, I learned a lot about my team from both of these heroes. Also, you get answers to the questions that had no answers like why Javy left the Braves in 2004, or why the Baltimore effort did not pan out. The photos were well chosen, and I really enjoyed the book!

One of the better baseball books I have read. Javy gives a lot of stats for different games and players. He also explains his behavior for not signing before games and how his first marriage went down. I am almost done reading this book and within the first few chapters I was even more enamored with Javy. He is a relatable guy and I love that he puts his heart on these pages. He doesn't diss anyone nor does he talk about PEDs (there were rumors with his 2003 season). I think he gives GREAT advice for catchers especially. Wonderful insight into the game he played for years. I am proud to be a Braves fan and miss seeing him behind the plate.

Javy is my all-time favorite athlete, and I was stoked when I found out about this book. As an avid Braves fan, I enjoyed reading about the 14 year run from his perspective. My heart was broken for him when he talked about not being able to remain a Brave for his entire career. I knew he was a classy guy, but reading his feelings about fans really brought that to life. Thank you Javy for letting me into your world!!

I was expecting more drama around him not catching Maddux, but at the same time I'm glad there wasn't. Some of the stories in the book had the same sentences, just worded differently, several times. But otherwise it was was fun to read his side of the story about his experience in the major leagues.

This is really a great book if you are a baseball fan. It is well written and gives you a view of what goes on with the players that we don't get just watching them play. Javy was one of my favorite players and I really enjoyed this book.

Any Braves fan during this time will enjoy reading Javy's tales of the Braves. No real behind the scenes dirt tho. Javy likes everyone. John Rocker was nice when he wasn't crazy. Wish he had gone farther like Mike Piazza did in his book. Easy read.

Great book about Javy. Wish they had told a little more of his personal life. But still very interesting read.

As a diehard Braves fan, it is pretty hard to find a book written by someone from the Braves organization that isn't of interest.

#47,357 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Great book, great size, exactly what I needed. Doesn't have pre printed dates so you can start at any point in the year. I'm going to spiral bind mine so I have a little more flexibility. Took a picture of the cover because some people were curious what it looks like, all in all I'm happy with it!

LOVE this food & exercise journal. I have had 2 before this that were much smaller and I hated them. With this one there is a ton of space to write everything down, track emotions, water intake, fruits & vegetable servings, etc. I only weigh myself on Sunday's but if you are one who likes to weigh in everyday there is a place to record that. It gives you are starting point for weight & measurements and each end of the week there is a "week summary" where you can reflect on your week which I REALLY love!!!My only complaint is that it's not spiral bound but that's just a personal preference thing...it still opens & closes just fine. lol

I'm not kidding, I really do love my food and exercise journal! I've spent the last year and a half using calorie tracking apps like MyFitnessPal, which are incredibly useful and mobile, but I find that I need to see a visual of what I'm tracking on paper (the same way I also like seeing a printed calendar versus a to-do list on my phone). I found that I was using MFP to toy around and manipulate my food choices thoughout the day, instead of internalizing what meals felt healthy. I also found that the apps made it difficult to access a weekly report.I decided to get a journal instead. I searched around a variety of different formats, but this one seemed to cover everything: Calories, food types and amounts, exercises, ways to track and monitor feelings about what you ate and how hungry you felt, and a weekly progress report which allows you to weigh-in, and put into words how you think you did that week and how you would like to improve.THIS IS A BULLETPROOF TRACKING TOOL FOR FOOD AND FITNESSI think the most important aspect of developing better nutrition and exercise habits is by checking in with what works best for us. That means checking in on how you feel! It's so easy to try and quantify all of our experiences (pounds lost, calories consumed, calories burned, steps taken, etc.) but sometimes these numbers, when compared to others, tell you more about how you compare in a population versus what actually works best for you. This journal is a great tool for checking in on what you do, what you need, and what works best for you. You are your own best indicator of how you're doing, not a logarithm! One Critique:This journal is effective for only ten weeks. I wish it would have enough entries to last a whole year, or at least three months (which can be a standard time span for a weight training program). More pages, please!

I REALLY like the set up of the journal. I would have given it 5 stars except it is so big I can't carry it in my purse and I carry a decent sized purse. I wish they made a mini version of this. At least 1 1/2" smaller, maybe 2" all the way around. It would be more convenient.

I REALLY love the format of this journal. It's exactly what I was looking for, and tracks everything I want - including the how I felt about my meals (the smiley faces). It even has weekly progress report pages.I only gave it a 4 stars, however, because of the 2 cons (which are pretty important to me). I'm still going to keep it and use it, but I hope that they update the book before I need to order another one (wishful thinking!).CONS1. I wish this had a spiral binding. I know these are harder to put on the shelf at a store and are more expensive and all that, but for a journal like this, it would make it so much easier to use. I would totally pay the extra.2. I don't care for the cover art at all. I like to have my food journals out and handy - but this one just screams exactly what it is, and I'd rather it was more subtle.I wish ONLY these 2 things were changed - everything else is perfect and shouldn't change (in case the author reads this).PROSEverything else!

This is a fantastic tool for healthy eating and healthy living! I especially like that it has checkboxes for keeping track of how much water I drink and how many servings of fruit and veggies I'm eating every day. I also like that it includes space to document the reasons for snacking--sometimes we're hungry, sometimes we're frustrated, etc.--which really helps me think more about why I'm eating and if I'm making appropriate choices.I've been using this to maintain awareness of how I'm eating and exercising, but the important part is that I'm not using it to limit or restrict what I'm eating. If you're prone to that, you might want to talk to a health professional about a good system for you. What this has helped me do is figure out what an appropriate serving of some of those less healthy items is, and also understand how it impacts my total calories for the day. I also HIGHLY RECOMMEND QUITTING DIET SODA if you drink it. That gets your taste buds and hunger signals all out of wack. Between quitting diet soda and using this tool to monitor how much water I drink, how much fruits and veggies i'm consuming, and being aware of calories and portion sizes, I lost 14 pounds in a month and a half. I didn't even begin exercising on a regular basis yet! Good tool, if you use it well. I plan to buy again for the next 10 weeks.

I love the concept of the book, however it was not made well the pages are not bound evenly and some of the words are cut off on some pages.. hopefully they can fix this publishing issue or I got a lemon.

I came into this via Reinventing Organizations. Though I had heard of Holacracy a bit before, I had never looked into it in much detail. I am predisposed to like this kind of book. I am a manager-of-managers in a high-tech company and I often feel like "there must be a better way".I came away fundamentally unsatisfied. This feels like a Cliff Notes version of Holacracy rather than something that would convince me to try it out in my company. The author (eventually) makes a good case for the governance meetings, though I feel like the explanation was spread out across multiple chapters. For instance it isn't until Chapter 10 (a chapter ostensibly about how to adopt Holacracy piece-meal if wholesale adoption is impossible) the author explains "change your language, change your culture" and why the terms "tension" and "tension processing" were chosen. I feel like this discussion should have been up in Chapter 4 when the governance meetings were introduced.I think in general the book does a good job of explaining the "what" of Holacracy but is pretty hit-or-miss when it comes to explaining the "why". Another example is the repeated claim that you "can't adopt only parts of Holacracy". This includes a rigid formula for meetings that includes a closing round where you go around the room and "give each person space to share a closing reflection about the meeting". I'm not saying that's a bad idea but I don't understand why that is integral to Holacracy. If I leave out that one part do I really lose all the benefit of Holacracy? I guess I'm just skeptical of that. But the biggest failing of the book is that is it just too light on implementation details. This comes out in two main areas: role definition and the "apps" that are suddenly introduced at the end of the book. For the role definitions, Holacracy seems to rely in an almost legalistically complete role definition. Since Holacracy has been rolled out in many companies, I'm not saying it is impossible to do. But that book doesn't really give any real world examples of how this role clarification works in large and messy teams. How many people really know all the roles they fill and what the scope of all those roles are? How do you realistically make that switch? I'd have loved to see that detail. What about jobs where you seem to have a lot of people who are somewhat interchangeable? How does that work. For instance, imagine a software team with 15 developers working in a normal scrum-kind-of-way where you take stories from the top of the backlog. What does the role definition look like for them? What is the scope of their autocracy? I'm sure there are answers but the book doesn't provide any, instead relying on contrived examples in a company that appears to have about 5 employees. But my single biggest complaint is when you get to Chapter 8 and a subsection introduces "apps". By that point I was skeptical on some details, didn't fully by in, but felt it had some good and interesting ideas. But I had these nagging questions at the back of my mind and was wondering when the book would get around to providing some answers."How do you set salary? How do you give raises? How do you give promotions? How do you make hiring and firing decisions? How do you decide to shutdown an entire office and lay off 150 people? How do you decide to IPO or accept a buyout? How do you set budgets and enforce them?"The book's answer is...."You could design your own system, given your specific needs, but you may find it useful to check out [the HolacracyOne] 'app store'."No link or URL is provided. It is hard to get excited about designing from scratch my own systems for these things (I don't expect a perfectly formed solution that requires no tweaking but starting with a totally blank canvas?) and I'm also not excited that the answer is to go read a web page—I bought this book for a reason, hoping it would make a compelling argument.(FWIW, there is exactly one "app" on the "app store" for compensation. It sounds interesting but it also sounds similar to the compensation system a startup called hanno.co blogged about using...and then nine months later blogged about moving away from. So I'm not exactly sold on it as a great option.)

Research shows that every time the size of a city doubles, innovation or productivity per resident increases by 15%. When companies get bigger, either their innovation or productivity per employee generally deceases.“In today’s post-industrial world,” author Brian Robertson explains, “organizations face significant new challenges: increasing complexity, enhanced transparency, greater interconnection, shorter time horizons, economic and environmental instability, and demands to have a more positive impact on the world.”The problem is not only that we don’t change fast enough, but that the employees sense this dissonance, and they don’t like it. Most have at least a vague sense that organizations seem designed not to get the best out of them. The quest for stability and success was believed to lie in up-front planning, centralized control, and deviation prevention. This model worked well enough in the simple and static environments of the industrial age. This book deals with the restructuring of organizations. It is not that we haven’t tried to restructure our organizations, we most definitely have tried, but we haven’t succeeded because all our changes have not gone far enough. We have merely bolted changes onto a conventionally-structured organizational system. As an example of the problem of this change, Robertson tells of a company which had adopted empowerment as a primary issue. When a much loved leader was fired, one of his team, lamenting the departure of his boss, turned to his co-worker and asked: “Who will empower us now?”!This book is a sterling guide to making our organizations not simply more evolved, but to turn our organizations into an evolutionary organism, “one that can sense and adapt and learn and integrate.”Holacracy bears a striking similarity to the way the human body is designed to function efficiently and effectively. It does this through a system of autonomous, self-organizing entities distributed throughout the body. The body processes extraordinary amounts of information each moment, that would be impossible to centralize at the top, in the conscious mind.Consider the difference between the bureaucratic organization of a company and the self-organization of people in a city. In a city, people share space and resources, and almost all of them understand their boundaries and their responsibilities. When these laws are obeyed, the traffic (for example,) flows and we move about faster. Yes, there are governing bodies to define and enforce those laws, but the residents of our cities don’t have to wait for authorization from the boss for every decision they make, they have plenty of autonomy. This image of a city was shared with the author by Tony Hseih, one of the founders of the exceptional online shoe company, Zappos, that has a turnover of $1b and employs 500 people. “I’m trying to find a way to run Zappos more like a city,” he said, and engaged Robertson to do so after hearing his talk about Holacracy.“In contrast,” says Robertson, “the power and authority within (a conventional) organization is tight, we establish who can expect what, and from whom, and who can make which decisions, and within what limits. This command and control is at odds with what we need, and how adults wish to be treated.”The holacratic organization is comprised of roles that are required to fulfil the purpose of the organization – management, finance, marketing, production, etc. People are assigned to these roles with clear responsibility to fulfil the role in the best interests of the organization. They own the role fully; no one can make decisions about their role for them or interfere in its execution. If there is something wrong with the role - it is too large for one person or clashes with another role - this governance issue is discussed at one of the regular governance meetings so the matter can be resolved quickly. There is a strong distinction between a person and the role. Clashes are between roles, not people, and roles mutate or are adjusted as needed. These roles are not just a fancy way of describing a job description. Job descriptions are intended to be static, at least for a while if well-constructed, but Holacracy’s roles are intended and expected to mutate as the company and is need from the role changes. The decision to change is made by the occupants of the roles themselves, not the CEO. Their only criterion is what is good for the constitution that guide the organization. In effect, the decision-making is devolved to the local level. No one can co-opt the power of others. When assisting companies to transform into Holacracies, Robertson delights in telling CEOs that they no longer have the power to make decisions beyond their role. The CEO has in fact ceded his power to the constitution that governs the organization, and no matter how good a dictator he is, he is never better than a good constitution.Elliott Jaques, the organizational psychologist, identified three distinct types of “structure” in any organization. There is the “formal structure”—the organizational chart and the job descriptions, often far removed from real day-to-day events and needs. There is the “extant structure”, the structure that is actually operating, even though it is unstated. It describes who really makes decisions, or who really owns which projects. Then there is the “requisite structure,” which is the structure that would be most natural and best suited to the work and purpose of the organization. The Holacracy is this structure, articulated and documented and lived. Holacracy offers an alternative way to structure an organization, and needs to be seriously considered, and then adopted!Readability Light ---+- SeriousInsights High -+--- LowPractical High +----Low*Ian Mann of Gateways consults internationally on leadership and strategy and is the author ofStrategy that Works. NYC Department of Sanitation Manhattan Central District 13 Section Chief Anna Winthrop breaks up a fight between two crew members, Ernesto Balcazer and Garry Thompson over a third crew person Kelly Moore. Soon afterward, Garry's partner Terrence King calls Anna to say his teammate vanished after going behind the New Amsterdam Mews to collect garage. The next day Anna's boyfriend police officer Santos Reyes learns of Garry's body found in the Mews. NYPD Detectives Rinaldi and Roche lead the investigation.Anna thinks the link is to a rape incident in Iraq where Garry served two tours and a brother in arms was accused, jailed and killed in prison waiting a local trial. However, the pattern does not hold up when a second corpse of a murdered woman is found inside the Amster Mews. Dubbed by the media as the Mews Killer Anna continues her inquiries trying to find the elusive link that ties the corpses together when a cold blooded killer kills two more times and targets her too. This is a superb Hidden Manhattan amateur sleuth (See Death Is Disposable and Evil Justice) as Anna with the cooperation of her boyfriend conducts her own investigation as she believes that NYPD will not probe deep enough to seek the patterns to the murders. Readers will find it difficult to accept that Santos escorts his civilian girlfriend to crime scenes and keeps her informed on the official investigation that he has no need to know; and likewise the two detectives allow him and Anna to stay at the crime scenes. Still this is an entreating whodunit as Evan Marshall provides tremendous red herrings and several wonderful twists as he introduces readers to fake Manhattan Mews as ideal murder locales.Harriet Klausner

A sanitation worker named Garry is found murdered in an alleyway. His supervisor Anna decides that the police aren't doing enough and begins to investigate on her own. A few days later another body is found...then another...and another. The killer is nicknamed the "Mews Murderer" and the police seem to be chasing their own tails as Anna tries everything she can to discover who the killer is before they can strike again. To start with, I have to say that I loved the character of Anna. She was intelligent and thought through the facts coming up with some interesting points of view...some of which lead her the right direction and which lead her away. Her cop boyfriend, however, seemed to be in the story only as a way for her to get into the crime scenes. It would have been nice to see more from him, he seemed to have a lot of potential that was never used. The mystery itself was well laid out and presented. I managed to guess the murderer early on, but I think it was just a lucky guess. We follow Anna as she interviews persons of interest and looks for clues. There were a few spots where the dialog was a little choppy or drawn out as she was asking people the same questions one after another.Even though I had somehow managed to guess the culprit, the reasons behind his actions do not become clear until the very end. The story wrapped up very suddenly, and I would have liked to see it take more than just a couple pages. I was a bit rushed for my taste.Overall, the book was very enjoyable and I had a hard time putting it down. If you are a mystery fan you will enjoy the story.3/5

Review

'[A] powerfully original work which determinedly sets in motion profound and searching questions about philosophy in its relation to the universe described by scientific thought, and to human ends [...] Forcibly disabusing use of the assumption that we have somehow dealt with the problem of nihilism, this book reawakens, and even intensifies the toubling, disruptive power for thought that it once heralded.' - Robin Mackay, Parallax 'Nihil Unbound makes good on many of its promises, chief among them providing the reader a rare experience: actual philosophical discovery [...] Brassier's [...] work provides stunning evidence of at least one of Adorno's contentions: "Thought honors itself by defending what is damned as nihilism."' - Knox Peden, Continental Philosophy Review 'Alain Badiou and Slavoj i ek are the most renowned incarnation of a contemporary European philosophy finally in the process of stepping out from under the shadow of Kantian transcendental idealism and its complex, two-hundred-year aftermath [...] Ray Brassier too is one of the thinkers at the forefront of these exciting new developments.' #1,216,258 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

For disclosure: I am not a professional philosopher (an "amateur" at best!), and lack the requisite background to really judge Brassier's readings of Badiou, Laruelle, and a few of the other philosophers cited in this book. I skipped Part II (principally on Badiou and Laruelle), so this review pertains only to the chapters in Part I and Part III. I should also note that I picked this book up owing to Brassier's identification as a "speculative realist" - a label which has also been applied to the work of Bruno Latour, Graham Harman, and Jane Bennett. I have read and enjoyed several books by these other authors; but "speculative realism" is a very loosely applied label, and Brassier is pursuing a different project than these other authors.I have two general criticisms of Brassier's book. The first is its presentation. It is fair to note that Brassier's writing style is dense and allusive. In itself this is not a bad thing; I am not one to judge a writer for being "difficult." Other readers should be aware of the Brassier's difficulty, however, especially given the fact that you cannot look inside the book on Amazon or the publisher website. More problematic is the way in which Brassier presents his overall argument. The individual chapters often do not clearly "link up": The chapter on Horkheimer and Adorno's "Dialectic of Enlightenment," for example, seems out of place and does not add to Brassier's argument. In other places, Brassier takes far too much space to make his point: his discussion of Paul Churchland's work, for example, can be summed up in a single sentence, but includes a diversion of several pages through the internal tensions of Churchland's philosophy. (In my reading, awareness of these tensions does not alter the general significance of Churchland's work.)My second general criticism concerns the intended audience of Brassier's book. The general themes of the book are interesting and important: Brassier argues that science leads to a "disenchantment" of the world, and that this process of disenchantment leads ultimately to a form of nihilism. In Brassier's view, philosophy needs to live up to the challenge of a disenchanting scientific view of the world. How are we to think the meaning of "the human," and the relationship between human and world (or human and nature), in light of the "Copernican revolutions" of Galileo, Darwin, and cognitive science? Science has displaced humans from the center of creation, even from our own historically and culturally influenced sense of ourselves; but "post-Kantian philosophy" (Brassier's principal target) attempts to reserve a special place for the transcendental human subject. Brassier's book is in part a survey of attempts to get philosophy out from under the influence of Kant, and take science seriously on its own terms. This argument deserves a broad readership; I do not think it should not be relegated to specialists in recent continental philosophy. (Despite the frequent observation that Brassier draws on both analytical and continental traditions, the latter are heavily favored.) In depending so heavily on his readings of obscure continental philosophers, I think that Brassier in a sense undermines the general thrust of his argument. Rather than taking seriously the philosophical import of nihilism, I often found myself thinking "who cares?"I really would prefer to give this book 3.5 stars. (My "score" at least will average out with the previous reviewer's 5 stars.) I give 4 stars for the insightful discussion of Meillasoux, and the readings of Lyotard, Nietzsche, and Freud in the last chapter; 3 stars for the criticisms.

If you ever thought you were important, you're wrong. In so many words, this isone of the axioms of Brassier's "Nihil Unbound." In three parts and seven chapters,Brassier sets up the argument that because extinction is nigh, there is no point in trying toextract a meaning from the lives we perceive. As Brassier states in the book'spreface, "Philosophers would do well to desist from issuing any further injunctions aboutthe need to re-establish the meaningfulness of existence, the purposefulness of life, ormend the shattered concord between man and nature."Brassier defends nihilism as a necessity. No longer is nihilism thought of as thebleak alternative to Meaning, but a necessary realization of imminent extinction. Brassiercalls nihilism a "crisis of meaning," with both the crisis and the concept of meaningunderstood through the way that we have been historically conditioned to understand.Whereas the nihilistic view of the past came from the acknowledgement that "God" isbeyond our understanding, therefore our lives fall short of any kind of substantialMeaning, the nihilistic view of contemporary times comes from the fact that now we cangrasp the science from which nature and our universe is constructed. The more that isknown about science, the more a single point is driven in like a nail into the fibers of ourbeing: humanity is not important. Each chapter of "Nihil Unbound" focuses on a different philosopher. Brassier's main focus in spotlighting each of these thinkers is to rail against any kind of human-centered philosophy. With extinction as imminent as ever, "philosophy should be more than a sop to the pathetic twinge of human self-esteem" (xi). The fatal flaw of philosophy is exposed: all philosophy is man-made, from the minds of humans who are trying to explain the conditions of being human. Brassier encourages us to stray from this with the path of nihilism. When humanity neglects its own self-interest, the root of philosophy can be centered around reality. Without nihilism, we are trapped inside the box of our own understanding. If we are still to be tied to our idea of Meaning, we cannot imagine a world which we are not part of. In order to do so, we must accept that we are already dead. Brassier's brand of nihilism encourages just that. Philosophy should not affirm or justify human existence, but rather, allow us to overcome our existence. Ray Brassier's thinking reminds one of a specific short story by Ray Bradbury. "Homecoming" tells the story of a boy named Timothy, who is the only mortal being in a family of mortals. He is treated differently by his siblings for his lack of immortality. Knowing that he will be outlived by everyone he knows forces Timothy to face his mortality every day. Timothy is nearing extinction. Unsure of his life's purpose, he is constantly on the search for meaning. "Oh, to have strong teeth, with incisors like steel spikes. Or strong hands, even, or a strong mind...But, no, he was the imperfect one, the sick one. He was even--he shivered and drew the candle flame closer--afraid of the dark." (Bradbury, 10). Timothy, like the rest of mankind tends to do when faced with extinction, revels in his own fears and loathes in the fact that his life is worthless. The title, "Homecoming," refers to the family reunion that Timothy's family is preparing to attend. At the Homecoming, Timothy speaks with his Uncle Einar and confides in him his fear of death. "Don't feel badly, Nephew Timothy. Each to his own, each in his own way. How much better things are for you. How rich. The world's dead for us. We've seen so much of it, believe me. Life's best to those who live the least of it. It's worth more per ounce, Timothy, remember that." (Bradbury 17). Uncle Einar's words should serve as words of comfort to the entire human race. As we approach extinction, we are also steadily approaching a more precious life. Brassier calls life meaningless, and this is true. The only meaning that we can attempt to ascribe to our existence is the meaning that we create ourselves, meaning that has no value except to ourselves. Of course, mortality is a jarring idea, and the story ends with Timothy crying himself silently to sleep. The concepts in "Nihil Unbound" are universal, and offer a strange comfort to anyone who finds their imminent mortality frightening or jarring. A background knowledge of the philosophers discussed is implied by the author, so I would not recommend it to anyone who is especially new to the field of philosophy. And like most philosophical works, "Nihil Unbound" tends to fall prey to unnecessary jargon and overly verbose language. I give this book 3 stars.

Jesse has methodically documented that we no longer even have the façade of a republic that answers to the people. He obtained documents that clearly show that many institutions of the U.S. Government are in the hands of criminals and murderers. I appreciate that he did not over explain the significance of these documents. He simply stated what they were, the context in which they were created, and what they mean to the American people. The criminality Jesse has uncovered is shocking, and also the fact that federal agencies have been allowed to hide under a veil of secrecy with little or no oversight is almost beyond belief. Power has to have accountability, checks, and balances or it runs wild, always has and always will. Thanks you Jesse for shining light on these very dark places. Well done.Robert KirkconnellAuthor of: American Heart of Darkness: Volume I: The Transformation of the American Republic into a Pathocracy (Volume 1)

Portions of this book are enlightening. Unfortunately, instead of commenting on the significance of about 1/2 of the documents, the documents themselves are reproduced. In the kindle edition, anyway, the reproductions are usually not clear enough to read. Those of them that are legible are written in typical government speak and don't mean a whole lot on their own without some commentary regarding their context. So I'd have to say of the parts that were readable, it's an okay if a little frightening book. The other half is nearly useless in the Kindle edition. The print edition may well do a better job of reproduction, and I can't comment, except to say I wish the authors gave more information about the reproduced documents.

Read this book only if you are already skeptical of our government, or if you are brave. This is not conspiracy theory stuff. These are actual copies of government documents. If you don'y want your bubble burst, and you think everything is just peachy keen, avoid this book. As someone once pointed out, being a patriot does not mean you should not be skeptical of your government. Indeed, a true patriot insists on knowing what the people that are running the show are actually doing. If you want to know, this is a good place to start.

Jesse is a brave man, telling us Truths about our own government. He's one of many on my prayer list for safety, among many other Truth tellers and Whistle blowers. Jesse takes everything right from US gov't own files, via Freedom of Information Act. Wait till you read about Bay of Pigs, and details from several Presidents' administrations. Stunning material.

I have seen Jessie Ventura on his now defunct TV show and thought this book would be interesting, but it is so VERY poorly edited as to be almost totally unreadable. What a shame.

Offical government documents to show every patriotic americans worst fears. Lies, corruption' false flags. And the one that personally burns me up the most is the VFW declining vets medical aid after experimenting on them.

You hear about secret government moves and plans but now you can read the cryptic notes, memo's and totally f..k'd up world of politician/ business / dreams and schemes! This is as real and plain evil as you may ever witness!

Very informative. Should create suspicion of our government in anyone's mind. One must know that these documents were not written for pleasurable reading. You're reading from 63 government memos Ventura's commentary. Well worth the effort and I recommend.
