When I bought the book I was torn by the split rating of two 5s and two 1s. Now, that I used the book to travel Yucatan, I find the 1 star rating absolutely justified. Tons of information in the book are inaccurate. Some examples: The book tells you there is a visa fee if you arrive by air - there isn't. It tells you Chichen Itza closes at 5.30pm followed by a light show at 7 pm. It closes at 4.30pm and there is no light show. Many sights like the Muyil ruins (which was amazingly beautiful) are not even described, the information about the appreciation of credit cards and USD was wrong - almost nowhere you can pay with credit card and get ripped off if you pay with USD. It happens frequently that unspectacular sights are hyped in the description. The authors are way to often rating the sights instead of describing them. In addition the book is almost free of the typical Lonely Planet insider tips which make the other travel guides so valuable.Provided maps are vastly of no use, especially for the towns and villages. Most locations don't even have maps provided and those who are are incomplete. We tried navigating through Valladolid with the LP map, the map didn't mention that all roads are one way roads. Of course the Mexicans have chosen an irregular pattern, so we were lucky when we found our way out.In my opinion the book should be banished from the Lonely Planet series. If this would be the first one I ever used, it would have been the last one too. Lonely Planet should not publish books which do not meet the standarts set by the Australia, New Zealand or Iceland guides.
Usually LP guides are my go-to travel guides, especially outside of Europe. Unfortunately, this particular guide is outdated and is not as complete as I would expect, especially for a highly visited region such as the Yucatan. This region is likely changing rapidly, which may be part of the issue given a publication date of 2013.I would recommend waiting for a newer version
Used this book many times on a recent trip to Merida, Holbox and several small towns in Yucatan Peninsula. I needed it right away so I couldn't wait another month for the newest edition. I always prefer Lonely Planet guidebooks to the other choices out there since I find they have a good range of hotels, restaurants etc in many price ranges.
This review is for Kindle edition.Using travel book in the kindle form is plain bad experience.At the time I need to buy this version because I don't have enough time for the paper copy to arrive, or even time to go to bookstore and buy one.But using it during the trip was a nightmare. It was very hard to navigate the book, or flip between map and detail of the place I want to go.Having said that the content of the book is good. Some of the map in the book actually safe me from getting lost.
I think this book is probably really useful if you're planning on driving around and visiting lots of spots and towns around the Yucatan. But I stayed almost exclusively in Cozumel and did not find it very useful. The section on Cozumel is only 13 pages. Not that many restaurants or bars are listed and only one shop is reviewed. If you're planning on staying in one location, save your money and use Tripadvisor instead
We recently traveled to Cancun and the Yucatan, and we found this guidebook to be very useful--particularly since we carried it on our iPads! Its information was accurate, and we depended on its recommendations and found them to be sound.
Decent guidance, no color pics, and slightly less easy to navigate than my older Europe Lonely Planet books. Was somewhat helpful. The maps weren't super clear (restaurants listed on one page corresponded to a different map in another section). I'd suggest checking out a different guide book, which is a shame, I used to love LPs.
I love Lonely Planet guides, and never travel without them. This one did a good job of naming sites to visit, places to stay, and places to eat. Who could ask for more, right? I can't put my finger on it, but I did not enjoy the narrative the way I usually do with the Lonely Planet. It could have used less flip and more respect.
