About the Author
Galina Tachieva is a partner and director of town planning at the central office of Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company, in Miami, Florida. She is originally from Bulgaria, and received a master’s degree in architecture from the University of Architecture and Civil Engineering in Sofia and a master’s in urban design from the University of Miami, Florida. Galina submitted a “Sprawl Repair Kit,” which contains some of the ideas and drawings from her book, to the 2009 Re-Burbia competition sponsored by the blog Inhabitat and DWELL magazine, where it won the People’s Choice Award.

The book is very well organized and gorgeously illustrated. The step by step technique is repeated throughout different conditions and sizes of urban repair with diagrams, zoom-in views, and examples. It is like a recipe with instruction from how to cook for two to how to handle catering for hundreds and thousands. One missing component is vertical height. The book emphasizes on creating density from two dimensional planning point of view without adequately addressing the role of building height, scale, and proportion.
This book is a very helpful resource, but a close examination of many of its before-after visuals (such as on page 115)reveals that as many as a half-dozen parking garages appear in the after scenarios, enabling the high densities to be achieved, with resultant walkability. My only criticism of the book is that so many examples are dependent on multi-story parking garage provision, which is way beyond the means of many communities. Readers should be aware of this, and endeavor to create designs that would work with surface parking, the only feasible alternative in many locales. Surface parking is shown in one example on page 125, but the vast majority of examples involve parking structures.
This is an excellent book on repairing sprawl, for the architect, planner or developer as well as for a lay person. It is well written and easy enough for a lay person to understand and explains itself very well and yet it is an excellent resource for anyone in the field. It is equally useful for planning new communities or fixing old ones. The diagrams in the book are easy to understand, very informational and complement the text. This is definitely a must for anyone in the business.I cannot recommend it enough!

Great book, but if you have the option, get the hard copy instead of the Kindle version. The illustrations aren't nearly as legible on screen as on paper.
