From the time Iran's nuclear ambitions were revealed in 2002 up to the signing of the JCPOA in 2015, endless stories appeared about Iranian "cheating" and other malevolent acts to hide their alleged reach for nuclear weapons. U.S. media coverage of these allegations was consistent - this "new evidence" was trotted out with a rejoinder from Iran that these charges were false, the country was not pursuing nuclear weapons, but the press coverage inevitably ended with "but …" The continuous raft of charges against Iran - the "laptop of death," "secret" enrichment locations, exploding bridge wire research for a nuclear trigger, nuclear warhead missile designs, etc. etc., were all fraudulent, cooked up by Israel. Iran never once violated the NPT. The purpose of these false allegations was to create sufficient doubt to bring Iran before the UN for sanction - and it happened. This propaganda campaign worked. While I forget the exact number, by 2011, 60% of Americans believed Iran already had nuclear weapons. The great strength of this book is its chronological review of what actually happened, a chain of events that, for most of us, is a blur of confusion as the sensational - charges of Iranian malfeasance - is remembered, but not the difficult procedural efforts to reach a final compromise, a long and difficult road given the resistance to a settlement by elements both here and in Iran. Ritter covers this whole journey in a clear and engaging fashion. To end with a personal opinion: Iran may well have had nuclear weapons ambitions. As far back as the late 1980s it reached out to the A.Q. Kahn organization for centrifuge design, and in the 1990s began to ramp up some fundamental nuclear research. Why? The alleged reason proposed during the 13-year period leading to the JCPOA was Iran's leadership was controlled by "mad mullahs" with a desire to "wipe Israel off the map." This is absurd as it would lead to nuclear suicide. The eight-year Iraq-Iran War was brutal with Saddam - clearly supported by the USA - used chemical weapons and Scud missile attacks on Iranian cities. Iranian casualties, while unknown to this day, were significant. Saddam then cemented his reputation as a demented militarist by invading Kuwait. With a neighbor like Saddam, it is not illogical that Iran would seek nukes to dissuade the Iraqi leader from future intervention in Iran. The 2007 NIE by all the U.S. intelligence agencies that concluded Iran ceased it nuclear weapons ambitions in 2003 probably dissuaded the Bush administration from an invasion of Iran eagerly sought by Israel - he essentially said as much in his autobiography. Never asked - why 2003? That was the year the U.S. invaded Iraq - no more Saddam, no more need for Iran to develop nuclear weapons. Problem solved. However, to this day, the beat goes on - Trump, Pompeo, Bolton and the ever-present neocon residual in D.C. endlessly label Iran as "the world's largest state sponsor of terrorism." Can any of them name one instance of said activity since the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT) was initiated 18 years ago?
