About the Author
Huda Fahmy was born in Detroit, MI and attended the University of Michigan where she majored in English and minored in Political Science with hopes of one day becoming a lawyer. She finished one year of law school before shifting to education. She taught English to middle and high schoolers for eight years before she started writing about her experiences as a visibly Muslim woman in America and was encouraged by her older sister to turn these stories into comics. Huda, her husband Gehad, and their son reside in Houston, Texas.

As a white male protestant "of a certain age," I think it best to stay in touch with friends of all ages and backgrounds. I have many Muslim friends, and have heard their accounts of how they are treated sometimes for their attire, especially hijabs. It's as if some non-Muslims regard the headscarf as some sort of penance to be worn, when, in fact, Hijabi women are proud to dress as they do, in accordance with their religious beliefs.They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and I feel that a funny picture is worth ten times that, because humor can be the key that unlocks a thousand locked doors that have put up barriers between people. I first encountered Huda Fahmy's "Yes I'm Hot In This" cartoon strip on Instagram, became an avid follower, and was delighted to hear that her wit and art were coming out in book form. Huda, through gentle, never caustic, wit makes important points that will ring true with men and women of all faiths. Because of her comics, I have a greater understanding of what it feels like to be looked at askance just because of wearing a hijab. Unfair, uncool, and something we can all put behind us if we learn how to.Yes, Huda, you might be hot in this, but you are also cool in this! I love this book and the message it brings.
I've been following Huda on IG for over a year and I've enjoyed her comics immensely so much so I bought her book as soon as the presale opened!I got my book this morning (mis-delivery issue but I finally got it in my hands), sat down to just read the first few pages and ended up reading the entire book. Her story telling is incredible and I'm always amazed by people who can say so much while being so succinct and there is so much power in the little bite sized stories she shares with us that, together, bring a broader perspective of her life as an American Muslim woman. I found myself laughing out loud at so many of the pages, I felt pangs in my heart at others and even teared up a bit when she was talking about her hopes. Her illustrations add so much depth to the messages, from the lil glimmers in Gehad's eyes when he gets excited about things and subtle facial expressions she draws when people are being... ugh... people. Huda is hilarious. period. Her sharing glimmers of her life is an absolute gift and while she is hilarious, she's also very vulnerable in what she has chosen to share and how the things that happen to her, affect her. And humor is disarming, it allows people to get into places within themselves they may not be able to if they were just reading straight up information and this book does that just exquisitely...delivers laughs and then dishes truth of experience. There is a definite flow to a broader story in this book than you cannot get in the smaller comics online, which really adds to the entire message.I think this book is terrific for EVERYONE. Adults need it so they can open their hearts to be a little/lot less close minded and for kids, while some of the stuff would fly over their heads, I think the way she delivers many of her important messages is simple enough, seeds of understanding and acceptance would be planted in even smaller children.I highly recommend this book. I'll be buying it for my sister for xmas!
At surface level this is a beautiful and hilarious read. I love how the author turns everyday life/struggles into comics everyone can laugh about. On a deeper plane it brings to light struggles I never realized existed. This book has the power to bring us together and open our minds to other cultures and ways of life.  This book is a testament to the power of positivity. Even through the curiosity, weird reactions, rude questions and outright hateful behavior directed towards her, the author maintains an unparalleled degree of patience, politeness and stays true to her beliefs. I loved reading this book and think everyone should.Â
If you're not familiar with her comics on Instagram, Yes I'm Hot in This is a beautiful series. It's a refreshing take on American life. Huda brilliantly captures the struggles of racism and Islamophobia while also keeping it fresh and funny. Her supporting cast also does not disappoint- be it well meaning white lady Susan, her loving husband Gehad, her mother, or fan-favorite Darius.If you want to support voices that frequently aren't heard, but you still want to laugh, do buy this comic. If everyone followed Yes I'm Hot in This on Instagram, I'm pretty sure the world would be a lot less hateful and have a lot more laughs.Thank you Huda, for sharing your world with the rest of us. Thank you for turning ignorance and hate into humor. You have already made this world a better place.
I follow Huda on IG & I love her approach. She is intelligent, authentic, and kind. So of course I pre-ordered this book. There are lots of comics I hadn’t seen before. I chuckled out loud at a lot of these. Even though I’m not Muslim, the punchlines are often relatable. It even includes a little glossary at the back! These comics teach powerful lessons in a lighthearted way that never comes off as preachy. I love this book, I’m going to buy another copy to donate to my library because everyone needs to read this!
I'm incredibly thrilled with Huda's work for so many reasons. Aside from it being genuinely funny and extremely relatable, her ability to take deep issues (that could spark full college level discussions) and describe it eloquently in 4 panels or less is remarkable! On top of that, she represents a community often shunned and misrepresented. It's so exciting to see my students, coworkers, and sometimes strangers who follow her instagram account admit they are learning so much about a culture and religion they would never have known about. As a teacher of students of color, they're super excited to see POC represented, trailblazing a path for all minorities. I'm in tears flipping through the pages of a comic about women like me of which I never had access to as a kid. It feels absolutely surreal. These witty comics literally make you laugh aloud no matter your background because everyone has encountered weird awkward and funny situations. You're a gem Huda, we love you and we're fans for life!
