Loved this book. Trent Horn never fails to fulfill his promises. This book delivered everything he said it would. I especially enjoy how he provides "Probably Fake" or "Misattributed" or "A Better Quote," etc.Trent Horn provides so much clarity that I'm truly astonished how much I'd taken some of these quotes for granted. I think it would be great if other authors would do the same for all the secular misquotes out there as well. I'd highly recommend this book to everyone who prefers the truth over sensation.

Not only a clarification of quotes, but a source of additional information on a variety of holy people and what they did say.

In the last year I have read 12 books by Trent Horn, I have appreciated all of them, and I loved 'Why We're Catholic: Our Reasons for Faith, Hope, and Love' and this book is just as good and am important read. The introduction to this book alone will cause you to question your own memory, and quotes that are considered famous. Horn starts with this:"The villain clad in black raises his fist at the hero and says, "Luke, I am your father!" The dashing captain unfolds his communicator and gives the order, "Beam me up, Scotty." A mysterious jungle man sets down the woman he's rescued and she teaches him to say, "Me Tarzan, you Jane." What do these three things have in common?You might say they're lines from famous movies: The Empire Strikes Back, Star Trek, and Tarzan the Ape Man respectively. But then you remembered this is a book about fake quotations and you changed your answer: they're misquotations from famous movies.In The Empire Strikes Back, Luke Skywalker accuses Darth Vader of killing his father. Vader responds, "No, I am your father"-not "Luke, I am your father." The crew of the Starship Enterprise often asked Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott to beam them up via the transporter, but no one in the Star Trek films or television shows ever said, "Beam me up, Scotty."2 Finally, in the 1932 classic Tarzan the Ape Man, Tarzan only says "Tarzan. Jane. Tarzan. Jane," not "Me Tarzan, you Jane.""And then addressing the question of why it matter he states:"Before I continue, I need to address readers who might be rolling their eyes or muttering the word "nitpicker." Does it really matter if people get one word wrong in a line from a Star Wars film? Who cares if the cute story about George Washington and the cherry tree never happened? Why can't you just leave the saints alone and write about something important? But accurately recording the wisdom of saints and other well-known Catholics is important because truth is important."He then goes on to say:"But the most important reason we should challenge false quotes from saints is because in some cases they contradict the Faith these saints embraced. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the saints are charitably yelling from heaven, "No! I actually said the opposite of that!" The major fake quotes in this book are not merely paraphrases of saintly wisdom or harmless pieces of advice that have been falsely attributed to the saints, although I do cover those kinds of quotes, too. Instead, each chapter in this book addresses a theme embodied in a well-known quote that is contrary to our Faith."And after reading this book I am even more convinced about the power of words, and yes getting a quote correct really does matter. The chapters in this volume are:Introduction1. "Preach the gospel always; if necessary, use words."2. "People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered . . . Love them anyway."3. "You don't need to believe in God to be a good person."4. "Pray as though everything depended on God, act as if everything depended on you."5. "God helps those who help themselves."6. "The truth is like a lion. You don't have to defend it. Let it loose. It will defend itself."7. "I believe because it is absurd."8. "Rome has spoken, the case is closed."9. "The road to hell is paved with the bones of priests."10. "God is always trying to give good things to us, but our hands are too full to receive them."What the Saints DID SayEach chapter does not deal with just a single quote, but quotes along themes. And the last chapter is one of the most powerful and important for us to read today. Trent Horn tackles some pretty controversial topics in that last chapter and in the whole book. The reason he does so is because truth matters. Horn tackles over 40 quotes in this book, some are close to the original source, some are well meaning and along the lines of the thought of the source. Some are so warped the original meaning is lost or manipulated. A few are misattributed, and some are just fabrications.Back when I worked for a non-denomination campus ministry, I kept a database of quotes. It was searchable by topic, author, and key words. I wonder if I were to be as diligent as Trent how many would need to be dropped from the list. Different staff members would send me quotes when they were read, from book, the web, or that they heard in talks and lectures. We used them for promotional material and in creating our own talks for retreats or conferences. It never really occurred to be to track down and verify sources, especially when taking a quote of a quote from a secondary or tertiary source. I know that going forward I will be far more diligent in what quotes I uses, and am thankful to Trent Horn for opening my eyes. This book was an excellent read!

One of my many annoying habits is that I am a bit of a “quote nazi”, that is I look for opportunities to point out that something quoted was never actually said by the person cited. Making distinctions between quotes we have no citations of, ones that were almost certainly never said, or ones that came from a different source. In doubtful, but popular quotes, he delves into the substance of the quote and why they fail theologically or logically. I really enjoyed this analysis. Especially considering quotes that at first blush seem to portray some truth in a winsome way. That on further analysis fail at doing this and are in fact misleading.So besides adding to my collection of quotes that are misattributed, it was the analysis that I enjoyed the most.

About the Author

I am a former journalist and a former lawyer and now write children's books full-time. I began this new endeavor after seeing my teenage daughters read mostly dystopian-themed books, It inspired me to write books about real people or novels with a strong dose of reality. Me and my 3 year old love this book! The pictures are bright and fun to look at with little surprises in the background of each picture (see how many pictures the serpent is hiding in). The rhyme is fun and a bit challenging to get through so reading it out loud is a combination of giggles at the story as well as laughing at Mommy's tied tongue. It is a cute story that moves quickly enough for a toddler and combines simple and more complicated words for appropriate educational development.As an unexpected benefit, reading this story has made my son more aware that there are sewers all around us. He tells me he knows he has to be careful that he doesn't fall in because it is smelly, icky, and the serpent might just want to be left alone.I have this book for Kindle but might buy a hard copy because we like it so much!

I gave this book to my 4 year-old nephew for Christmas. He absolutely loves the book as do the adults who read to him. When the letter 'S' day came around at his preschool, he asked to bring the book in. He came home with the book and a note of thanks from the teacher. She had read it aloud to the entire class, and every single child in the room loved it. I can't think of a better testimonial than that!

Great book for a lot of reasons. I have 7 year old that can't say "s". This book was a fun way to work on that with her. The story is cute and funny. The alliterations are a fun tongue twister.

My kids loved it as I read and giggled over the tongue twisting use of “s” words. Definitely will read often

The graphics are wonderful. The delightful story has an adventurous boy, slime, sewers and a spaghetti slurping serpent. My 1st grader was able to read the story out loud without difficulty and enjoyed the book immensely. The book was able to hold the attention of my wild 2 year old. My older daughter (5th grade reading level) even enjoyed listening to the story.

Adorable book, excellent condition given the "used" status. My 3.5 yr old son is obsessed with snakes and loves this book, especially with all the tongue twisting "S" sounds.

Read this whole book to a 4 year old, who generally won't sit still long enough to make it through one page of any book. Really cute story, great pictures.

A few people were talking about this book and how their kids really enjoy reading it and then I found it on Amazon. After it arrived and I read it, I have to admit, the kids are right. The book is cute and the illustrations are great. I'm glad I purchased this for my library.

From a 30 year veteran of global banking: This is the best book on ethics on Wall Street And is a MUST READ especially for leaders of banks and younger bankers and business people. Prof. O'Hara lucidly describes how easy it is for bankers to lose sight of the ethical culture necessary to build trust in the markets. She does not provide all the answers - it is not that simple. Her case studies are brilliant and show the boundaries of ethics and the "weasel zone" - which I have observed personally in my time in the business. I read this cover to cover in a few sittings - underlining and highlighting and making notes along the way. This book clearly demonstrates the value of having both an academic and philosophical approach WHILE having firm grasp of EXACTLY what goes on in the inner workings of the "deals" or "strategies" developed by firms in the business. Bravo. Now time to re-read and send to colleagues.

I am one of those who think "business ethics" is an oxymoron. And I suspect that, deep down, Professor Maureen O'Hara shares the same impression but would like to think otherwise.Why else would she include in her very first chapter a description of the "intriguing [German] study" (page 5) by Falk and Szech? This is a study that shows how the strength of people's intuitive moral convictions diminishes the minute they are plucked out of making individual, isolated moral choices and placed in a market situation where they are expected to negotiate and bargain over the same moral issue (in the case of the Falk/Szech study, the issue is whether to kill mice, or not). In other words, this is a study making the compelling case there is something inherently unethical about markets.Moreover, Professor O'Hara's every tentative prescription throughout her book for tighter oversight and building, or rebuilding, an ethical "culture" in financial institutions and in the hearts and minds of the people who run them, is followed by the sad and often reluctant admission that such strategies can be easily side-stepped. (Hence, her suspicion that tighter, more detailed regulations are raw meat to savvy lawyers and bankers who are just inspired to find new and inventive ways to violate them, as well as her seemingly baseless hope that vague "standards" may do the trick somehow of reminding highly-paid schemers of their moral obligations to a wider community).Her continual use of the apt phrase "weasel zone" to describe the deeply ambiguous and complex grey area between the clearly ethical and the clearly illegal, also gives the game away.Curiously, O'Hara does not consider whether the political revolving door between Washington and Wall Street, as well as the diminished sense of moral hazard resulting from the notorious bank bailouts in 2008, hasn't contributed to flagrant unethical behavior. And what about fines that don't impact bankers' salaries (merely the "cost of doing business")? And what about settlements that allow banks to escape admissions of guilt or any firings of wrong-doers? Why are they suddenly silent and a little embarrassed about the same thing for well-heeled, white bankers and their enablers?

This is an excellent book by a foremost research professor at the cutting edge of HFT and microstructure issues and she understands market-making in intricate detail. Yet, blissfully, the book SPARES you the boring intricacies and gives you a birds-eye view of the issues in executive summary form. This is invaluable. Even journalists today can not and do not get this frank (they have "loyalties" to their sources of "content"....you do the math; also financial journalists act like they get paid by the word, and do not like to give away the punch line easily). Not so for professor O'Hara.I think she soft-peddles and nuances the ethical discussion on these "howlers-of-a-scandals", therefore i gave it four stars instead of five.This book covers 6 major scandals:*The hiding of Greek Debt by GS.*GS cornering of the Aluminum Market in the US via LME*HFT order cancellation games*GS and the "billion dollar short" by John Paulson (the Abacus CDO)*JPM and California Electicity Market bid process exploits*Structured Loans to European Municipalities by Deutsche, Dexia etc.Should be on the shelf of every practitioner and student of finance. or as a gift. worth it.

The "greed is good" mantra that fierce competition will produce an optimal allocation of resources is questioned when that goal creates both the means, motive and opportunity to expropriate wealth from investors in ways that cross ethical boundaries. She carefully unwinds the mechanics of arbitrage positions to raise our awareness of clear ethical violations, but more importantly those cases that fall in the "grey" area where the line may not be crossed, but even defining the line is ambiguous. It is a must read for academics, practitioners and regulators who, now that it has been named, but grapple with the consequences and solutions to the issues raised in this book.

This book really helped my understanding of how Wall Street works and the moral issues that are so often tried in the public square. Things are never as simple as we would like them to be.
