#44,550 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Me and my 3 year old love this book! The pictures are bright and fun to look at with little surprises in the background of each picture (see how many pictures the serpent is hiding in). The rhyme is fun and a bit challenging to get through so reading it out loud is a combination of giggles at the story as well as laughing at Mommy's tied tongue. It is a cute story that moves quickly enough for a toddler and combines simple and more complicated words for appropriate educational development. As an unexpected benefit, reading this story has made my son more aware that there are sewers all around us. He tells me he knows he has to be careful that he doesn't fall in because it is smelly, icky, and the serpent might just want to be left alone.I have this book for Kindle but might buy a hard copy because we like it so much!

I gave this book to my 4 year-old nephew for Christmas. He absolutely loves the book as do the adults who read to him. When the letter 'S' day came around at his preschool, he asked to bring the book in. He came home with the book and a note of thanks from the teacher. She had read it aloud to the entire class, and every single child in the room loved it. I can't think of a better testimonial than that!

Great book for a lot of reasons. I have 7 year old that can't say "s". This book was a fun way to work on that with her. The story is cute and funny. The alliterations are a fun tongue twister.

My kids loved it as I read and giggled over the tongue twisting use of “s” words. Definitely will read often

The graphics are wonderful. The delightful story has an adventurous boy, slime, sewers and a spaghetti slurping serpent. My 1st grader was able to read the story out loud without difficulty and enjoyed the book immensely. The book was able to hold the attention of my wild 2 year old. My older daughter (5th grade reading level) even enjoyed listening to the story.

Adorable book, excellent condition given the "used" status. My 3.5 yr old son is obsessed with snakes and loves this book, especially with all the tongue twisting "S" sounds.

Read this whole book to a 4 year old, who generally won't sit still long enough to make it through one page of any book. Really cute story, great pictures.

A few people were talking about this book and how their kids really enjoy reading it and then I found it on Amazon. After it arrived and I read it, I have to admit, the kids are right. The book is cute and the illustrations are great. I'm glad I purchased this for my library.

Something for Nothing: Arbitrage and Ethics on Wall Street

Review

“Something for Nothing joins and extends a worthy tradition dating back at least to Adam Smith―who was both an eminent philosopher and an eminent economist―in wrestling with how markets do or don’t succeed in channeling some of our baser traits, greed and deception, in socially useful directions. Events surrounding the financial crisis and the ongoing project or crisis to construct a stable Euro zone have brought these always-present issues to the fore. Maureen O’Hara’s distinction as an economist who knows what makes sophisticated ‘high frequency’ markets work lends especial credibility to her analysis. Getting these things right is important if the general public is to support wise regulation of these markets.” - Thomas J. Sargent, winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics and William R. Berkley Professor of Economics and Business at New York University“In Something for Nothing, Maureen O’Hara takes on the vitally important, and sometimes controversial, topic of ‘legal vs ethical’ for financial professionals and firms in a practical, balanced, educational, and most enjoyable way. This book should be mandatory reading for people entering our business and for anyone interested in how to restore―and retain―trust in the financial services industry and its people.” - Jack Brennan, former chairman and CEO of the Vanguard Group“Something for Nothing teaches finance from a moral perspective, integrating morals into the theory. This should be essential reading for people seeking an introduction to finance, who feel they can’t really understand it properly if they can’t square it with their deep values.” - Robert J. Shiller, winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics and Sterling Professor of Economics at Yale University“A leading financial economist attempts to counterbalance ‘the impression that modern finance is at best ‘ethically challenged’ or at worst ‘fatally flawed,’ a perception bolstered by the ‘constant barrage of financial scandals.’ . . . . O'Hara . . . whose qualifications and contributions are recognized in the world of finance as well as academia, is concerned with exploring the gray areas between an ethical approach to financial transactions and behavior sanctioned by law. Identifying where such lines are drawn opens the door to a provocative and stimulating discussion of the kinds of ambiguous situations that arise almost daily in the financial sector, as well as the economy at large.” - Kirkus Reviews“Sophisticated.” - Library Journal

#1,160,262 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

From a 30 year veteran of global banking: This is the best book on ethics on Wall Street And is a MUST READ especially for leaders of banks and younger bankers and business people. Prof. O'Hara lucidly describes how easy it is for bankers to lose sight of the ethical culture necessary to build trust in the markets. She does not provide all the answers - it is not that simple. Her case studies are brilliant and show the boundaries of ethics and the "weasel zone" - which I have observed personally in my time in the business. I read this cover to cover in a few sittings - underlining and highlighting and making notes along the way. This book clearly demonstrates the value of having both an academic and philosophical approach WHILE having firm grasp of EXACTLY what goes on in the inner workings of the "deals" or "strategies" developed by firms in the business. Bravo. Now time to re-read and send to colleagues.

I am one of those who think "business ethics" is an oxymoron. And I suspect that, deep down, Professor Maureen O'Hara shares the same impression but would like to think otherwise. Why else would she include in her very first chapter a description of the "intriguing [German] study" (page 5) by Falk and Szech? This is a study that shows how the strength of people's intuitive moral convictions diminishes the minute they are plucked out of making individual, isolated moral choices and placed in a market situation where they are expected to negotiate and bargain over the same moral issue (in the case of the Falk/Szech study, the issue is whether to kill mice, or not). In other words, this is a study making the compelling case there is something inherently unethical about markets. Moreover, Professor O'Hara's every tentative prescription throughout her book for tighter oversight and building, or rebuilding, an ethical "culture" in financial institutions and in the hearts and minds of the people who run them, is followed by the sad and often reluctant admission that such strategies can be easily side-stepped. (Hence, her suspicion that tighter, more detailed regulations are raw meat to savvy lawyers and bankers who are just inspired to find new and inventive ways to violate them, as well as her seemingly baseless hope that vague "standards" may do the trick somehow of reminding highly-paid schemers of their moral obligations to a wider community). Her continual use of the apt phrase "weasel zone" to describe the deeply ambiguous and complex grey area between the clearly ethical and the clearly illegal, also gives the game away.Curiously, O'Hara does not consider whether the political revolving door between Washington and Wall Street, as well as the diminished sense of moral hazard resulting from the notorious bank bailouts in 2008, hasn't contributed to flagrant unethical behavior. And what about fines that don't impact bankers' salaries (merely the "cost of doing business")? And what about settlements that allow banks to escape admissions of guilt or any firings of wrong-doers? Perhaps writing tougher laws than Dodd-Frank (i.e. ones with fewer loopholes) and adding tougher sanctions for violations---like, for example, prison sentences---might reduce the weasel zone more effectively than more ethic courses in business schools or a concentration on standards as opposed to tighter regulations. After all, conservatives claim that mass incarceration for minority males reduces crime and is a good thing for society. Why are they suddenly silent and a little embarrassed about the same thing for well-heeled, white bankers and their enablers?

This is an excellent book by a foremost research professor at the cutting edge of HFT and microstructure issues and she understands market-making in intricate detail. Yet, blissfully, the book SPARES you the boring intricacies and gives you a birds-eye view of the issues in executive summary form. This is invaluable. Even journalists today can not and do not get this frank (they have "loyalties" to their sources of "content"....you do the math; also financial journalists act like they get paid by the word, and do not like to give away the punch line easily). Not so for professor O'Hara.I think she soft-peddles and nuances the ethical discussion on these "howlers-of-a-scandals", therefore i gave it four stars instead of five. This book covers 6 major scandals:*The hiding of Greek Debt by GS.*GS cornering of the Aluminum Market in the US via LME*HFT order cancellation games*GS and the "billion dollar short" by John Paulson (the Abacus CDO)*JPM and California Electicity Market bid process exploits*Structured Loans to European Municipalities by Deutsche, Dexia etc.Should be on the shelf of every practitioner and student of finance. or as a gift. worth it.

Professor O'Hara has brought her deep knowledge and understanding of the financial landscape to bear on a critical topic that has been previously sidestepped. The "greed is good" mantra that fierce competition will produce an optimal allocation of resources is questioned when that goal creates both the means, motive and opportunity to expropriate wealth from investors in ways that cross ethical boundaries. She carefully unwinds the mechanics of arbitrage positions to raise our awareness of clear ethical violations, but more importantly those cases that fall in the "grey" area where the line may not be crossed, but even defining the line is ambiguous. It is a must read for academics, practitioners and regulators who, now that it has been named, but grapple with the consequences and solutions to the issues raised in this book.

This book really helped my understanding of how Wall Street works and the moral issues that are so often tried in the public square. Things are never as simple as we would like them to be.

#166,016 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Just read this one yesterday, and, as was the case with all of the pieces of his that I've read so far, Mark Horrell painted a rather vivid picture of what trekking through that remote part of the world still is, warts and all. I really enjoy reading his descriptions of the people he encounters, as well as the places, because he tends to not try to gloss over the less-than-pretty aspects of these kinds of trips. Somehow he manages to make all the misery that seems to be inextricably entwined with these treks funny (in an "Angela's Ashes" sort of way) and makes you feel as though you're slogging through the muck right along next to him.

Having done the Gokyo - Cho La last year I really enjoyed Marks comments on his trek and climbs. Planning to return in 2013 to do the Three Passes of Khumbu, so his comments on Renjo La were very helpful. However as an "old" trekker, now 64, I found his condescending comments on the elderly Japanese trekkers distasteful along with his thoughts near Namche Bazar about them tottering along on their walking poles and wondering why they did not do it when they were younger. Perhaps they were too busy making an income to bring up your generation. Mark, I think you should be commending them for attempting their trips instead of relegating them to homes for the aged. But apart from this, it was a great read and highly recommended for anyone thinking of going to the area.

For $1 on Kindle can't go wrong. Good little book on a trek from Lukla to Mera and Island Peaks and then to Goyko and back to Lukla. Well worth the dollar spent.

Gives insights into what it is like to trek the Himalayas and also into the Nepal culture.

The first "book" I read by Mark Horrell confused me a little, more or less dumping the reader into one of Mark's journeys into the high mountains without any real background but after reading two or more of these accounts you will get his style and just plain enjoy his descriptions of some distant destination, often lesser known that most mountaineering adventure spots. I would love to be have been able to live the life he has!

I have come to quite enjoy each of Mark Horrell's travel diaries, not only because of their details of what it's like to participate in a commercial trek or climb, but because of the self-effacing and witty style in which they're written. While I don't always get the British sense of humour, it's evident that some of the trek participants don't either! Entertaining!

Have other M Horrell's books. All are entertaining, earthy language is not off-putting to me...the book has detailed descriptions that helps me understand climbing better. Great photos.

This is the second of Horrell's books that I have read and it was much better that the first, Snowman trek. This one kept me looking forward to reading further. I enjoyed his discriptions of the climbing and of the trek to get to where he eventually summitted the mountain. I do recommend this book.

Cloth Lullaby: The Woven Life of Louise Bourgeois, by Isabelle Arsenault

From School Library Journal

Gr 2 Up—This picture book biography of artist Louise Bourgeois (1911–2010), who was best known for her installation art and sculpture, highlights the roots of her inspiration. Through text and images, the author and illustrator emphasize the aspects of Bourgeois's childhood that influenced her: the river that flowed past her house, the colors of the flowers and plants in the garden, the "web of stars above her," and her nurturing mother, who taught her how to weave and repair tapestries. Novesky makes excellent use of simile ("Her family lived in a big house on the water that wove like a wool thread through everything.") and alliteration ("She taught her about the warp and the weft and how to weave."). Bourgeois's mother is also compared to a spider—"a repairer of broken things." As the story progresses, the images of flowers and plants, the cloth, and the water become larger, sometimes taking up most of the page. The perspective also changes, as readers see what Bourgeois saw as a young girl—the beauty of nature, her mother at work, and the tools her mother used—and, finally, her creations: giant spiders and webs, spirals and circular webs, and cloth drawings and books. VERDICT An inventive introduction to the work of a celebrated artist and a useful mentor text for exploring how language and imaginative, varied illustrations can work together to convey an idea.—Myra Zarnowski, City University of New York

Review

**STARRED REVIEW** "With evocative, gorgeous illustrations and an inspirational story of an artist not often covered in children’s literature, this arresting volume is an excellent addition to nonfiction picture book collections, particularly those lacking titles about women artists." (Booklist)"An inventive introduction to the work of a celebrated artist and a useful mentor text for exploring how language and imaginative, varied illustrations can work together to convey an idea." (School Library Journal)**STARRED REVIEW** "The evocative, hand-lettered text, peppered with quotations in red ink, provides an impressionistic portrait of the memories, colors, sounds, and images propelling Louise's art. These motifs connect the imaginative ink, pencil, pastel, and watercolor illustrations, done in a palette of indigo, red, and gray. Bold, repetitive patterns of stylized flowers, woven crosshatches, spirals, giant spiders, and musical notes form the perfect background for the cloth lullaby Louise weaves for herself. Splendid visual and verbal introduction to little-known artist Louise Bourgeois." (Kirkus)

Unique, unusually stunning and creative picture book. Every page is a wonder and joy. Incredible biography of this little known artist. Perfect for classroom use or a child's library.

Not exactly a subject for very young children in the first place. To start by saying, "Louise was raised by a river" is like saying that I was raised by wolves because they were nearby? Surprised the editors didn't rephrase. Besides which it isn't accurate. In order to present Louise Bourgeois to very young readers it's necessary to redact 90% of her life! Why choose this subject but on the other hand I'm glad her name is brought to the attention of others. Her artistic production is one long art therapy session. Filled with angst and provocative images. Obsessed with anger, resentment, fear, retribution, gender difficulties, fleeing the Holocaust, death of sibling, on and on. I agree with the other two-star review. Her ingenious use of cloth and loving use of her own clothing in later years stands above any fiber art that I construct. BUT.... she's something to take in very small doses. This book invites perusal by all ages -- somewhere a few pages in it loses a sense of wonder through dense, crowded images somewhat irrelevant to the life of this artist. That's why I feel snookered. Kind of bewildered and slimed.Maybe view in the library first and/or buy a grown up version of her life if it's information, inspiration you desire. The Fabric Works is a much better source. More expensive but accurate. You could sit with a child and turn those pages together? Grow into the book together so that by the time it's a teenager next to you? The book itself is a good friend for life.

I love everything about this book. There are a couple bits that I am not sure I want to read to my almost-5 yr old, but overall this is lovely. I bought it for myself but I guess I'll let some children look at it too :)

This book is beautifully written and really expresses the magic and scale of Louise Bourgeois's art and the impact it has on viewers. It is perfectly illustrated to bring her story to life. My five year old daughter loves it just as much as I do. I bought it for her birthday as a special gift as Louise Bourgeois is her namesake. ❤️

This is a children's book, so some of the more unpleasant episodes in Louise Bourgeoise's life are not mentioned. Pictures are nice. I learned about textile work she did in the last part of her life.

I read this book at Bart's Books in Ojai, CA. I don't know why I didn't buy it, but regretted it later, and I don't live there. So I just ordered this and had it sent to my friend. It is illustrated beautifully, and the beautiful story is based on a French woman who actually lived.

Gorgeous book and lovely language. My six-year-old who is a high level reader still adores picture books, and I'm always trying to find ones that are substantive and educational. Neither of us knew a thing about Louise, but this book was a great entry. Highly recommended!

Very beautiful book but dark story for young children. Also rather metaphorical for a child. I’d say this is one of those ‘adult children books’The illustration style is beautiful and would look gorgeous on a coffee table!

I love cookbooks like this that help take the guesswork out of what to throw together for dinner on busy weeknights! People who are not vegan often don't understand that, for a lot of vegans, just getting take-out or delivery is not an option on a night when you don't feel like cooking a complicated meal. Pizza is a great option for a quick meal that comes together quickly, but I was finding myself in the same veggie pizza rut. I initially bought this book as a wedding present for a friend (who is also vegan) as a cute accompaniment to a pizza stone. I searched the internet for a vegan pizza cookbook and was shocked to find that no one had thought of this yet! When it arrived, I flipped through it and liked it so much, I bought my own copy! The photos are lovely, and there are tons of flavor combinations I never would have imagined on top of a pizza (I love the bibimbap pizza!). Most of the time, I don't even put any vegan cheese shreds on top, and the recipes are still great. I loved Julie Hasson's Vegan Diner cookbook as well, so I was not at all surprised that she put together another winner. I have not yet tried the gluten-free dough recipe, but I have a lot of GF friends and family members, so this is great to have in my arsenal. Thanks, Julie!

I admit, I'm a traditionalist and prefer simply homemade vegan mozz + red sauce on my pizza - so I have not used this book to its fullest potential. That said, I give this book the highest rating for the PHENOMENAL pizza doughs therein - particularly the basic/standard dough (which is doubled in Dough for a Crowd). Everyone (parties, visiting family) has raved that it creates THE BEST pizza they've ever had - and I agree. I was never a big pizza fan, but the dough makes ALL the difference. It is so easy and PERFECT every time. It is ready to go in a few hours of rest time - OR can be mixed ahead and refrigerated, and a pizza feast is at your fingertips (pull off a chunk of dough, shape it, top it, bake it! Faster than delivery). The spelt dough is also a nice change of pace, with a really nice texture. I also like the metric/weight measurements she provides, which mean I can use JUST the one bowl in my kitchen scale, no extra utensils/measuring spoons to clean up.Eyeing more recipes, but I keep going back to a very basic cheese pizza, so that UNSURPASSED dough can shine through!

Who doesn't love good pizza? Pizza is my husband's favorite food - seriously, I often consider the possibility that he is in fact a Ninja Turtle - and his love of pizza was the principal driving force inspiring me to buy this book. Now, I love a good vegan pizza as much as anyone but somehow this is not something I tend to make often. Many of the vegan cook books I own include 1 or 2 vegan pizza recipes, all of which I've made and enjoyed but still, pizza making has always seemed to me to be something of a pain in the ass. All the work involved in slicing toppings, making your own sauce, and cheese sauce, and the absolute worst part for me is making the dough. I absolutely hate working with dough, it is my least favorite culinary endeavor. I don't know why, but me and dough do not equal a good team. Dough always gives me trouble and I suppose this is partly why I rarely make home-made pizza.Of course, a Vegan cook book devoted entirely to vegan pizza was too good a novelty to pass up and since my husband loves it so, I thought I'd throw caution to the wind, and against my better judgement purchase this book. Honestly, the negative reviews had me worried, and I was more then a little concerned that I would not like this book. I thought I'd find it too processed, too difficult, too uninspired, or worse still utterly useless. I am so, so happy that I didn't listen to the bad reviews, because I quickly discovered that I absolutely love this book! Really, it's not often that a cook book steals my heart and blows me away, especially not a simple, niche book such as this one, but that's precisely what's happened. Since I got this wonderful new book from Julie Hasson I've been making 2 pizza's a night for 8 nights straight - totally unprecedented! But the recipes are just so good, and so easy that I simply can't stop making them! Honestly, we haven't had a bad pizza yet. Each pie has come out of the oven the model of perfection, so different then my previous pizza making experiences. There are so many things I love about this book. For one I love that there are several options for different kinds of pizza dough - although I would have liked even more options, such as options that include herbs or maybe even stuffed crusts - and I love that each dough is super easy. Really I have never had a quicker or easier time working with dough in all my life. You simply add the ingredients to a bowl in order, stir it together let it rise and voila, perfect pizza dough! It stretches, it doesn't crack or tear, or stick, it's absolutely perfect, and tastes delicious! Next I love that Hasson includes recipes for house-made meats. Buying vegan meat can be expensive and I prefer to eat as little processed food as possible so this is really great. I also love that her meat recipes use quinoa which is a great idea I never would have thought of. All of her meat recipes also use sweet white rice flour as a binder, and I could not find this so I subbed organic cornstarch instead and think it worked really well as far as making the meat clump together, so you may want to give this a try also if you can't find the flour. I also don't have access to soy curls where I live and so instead I used home-made seitan ham that I had in my freezer where these were called for and it worked out well. I also used home-made seitan sausage in the recipes that called for sausage. Her pizza recipes are flexible like that, and I appreciate that so much. My only complaint here is that all the meat recipes are relatively similar, one reviewer suggested that they should have been condensed as one recipe with variations freeing up more space in the book for other recipes and I would tend to agree with that.Hasson also includes recipes for tomato sauce, 2 kinds of pesto, and a few cheese sauce options. I appreciate all of these although I would have liked some more variation on tomato sauces, as well as cheese sauces. The cheddary Cashew Cheese is my favorite of the cheese sauces, the flavor of this is so good it would fool just about any omnivore I think. It has a texture, and a flavor like mild cheeze-whiz. I also like that she doesn't use too much nutritional yeast. I like Nooch but I find a lot of cheese recipes call for way to much, where Hasson uses a conservative quarter cup, the perfect amount. As for the pizzas themselves they are simple yet delicious, and many are quite creative. Some include ingredients that I never would have thought to put on pizza, truffle oil, peanut butter, bean sprouts, cilantro, corn, and many others. I've always appreciated creative pizza, even before I went vegan I was never a fan of straight up meat and cheese. I always liked a little extravagance with my pizzas. Hasson also includes a cool dessert pizza chapter. I have not yet made any of the dessert pizza's but I'm hoping to make one or two this week, they all sound so fantastic. Pizza for dessert, who would have thought?Aside from the actual recipes other big selling points for me on this book are the simple, clean layout. I love it, the book is easy to navigate, easy to read, the instructions are easy to follow, and it just looks good. Crisp and clean, free of clutter. I like Hasson's tips and suggestions as well. My only real complaints are that I would have liked some pictures. I typically hate cook books that do not include pictures and this book doesn't have a single one. However the recipes are so stellar that I find this doesn't bother me too much with this book. Still it would have been nice, but maybe next time. Vegan Pizza volume 2? Secondly I would have liked more recipes. I know it says right on the cover that there are only 50 recipes, but this could easily have been a book of 100 recipes. So many options and variations on meats, sauces, and pizza's, and I selfishly want more! Ha. Oh well, overall I think this is a great primer cook book for learning to make - and love - vegan pizza. I would highly recommend this to any new vegan, any novice pizza maker, and even a seasoned pizza maker.Though there are a few things you may wish to consider before buying this book. 1 there is no nutritional information given on any of the recipes. I do not care about this whatsoever because lets face it, we're talking pizza here, you know? But I realize that no nutritional info is a deal-breaker for some. Also the recipes do call for store-bought vegan cheese. To be fair Hasson lists the cheese as optional but some reviewers have heavily criticized her for including it in her recipes anyway. Personally I have nothing against store-bought vegan cheese, I like it though I rarely eat it. Of course if I'm making pizza I know ahead of time that I'm not making something particularly `healthy' and so I just go with it, I splurge, get the vegan cheese and don't worry too much about it. It really doesn't take much ½ cup most of the time or a little more, so it hardly seems worth complaining about but to each their own. My feelings on this are if you don't like store-bought vegan cheese then make your own. I own 3 vegan cheese cook books, I can easily make my own cheese at home and use it on Hasson's pizzas if I so choose. If you're a processed vegan cheese hater then you can do this too and it isn't a big deal. Certainly it isn't worth panning the book over when so much in the book is phenomenal. Of course, if that still doesn't do it for you there is at least one vegan pizza cook book on the market that's goal is to create heart healthy whole food pizzas. If that's your thing, then buy that book instead of this one. If like me you don't mind indulging now and then, you're going to love this book. Seriously, vegan pizza has never been easier, ever! I know that I'll be making lots and lots of pizza in the future, no longer will this be a twice a year occurrence in my house. So, in the past eight days I've made quite a few recipes, these are the ones I've tried and this is what I thought.Dough and CrustEasy-Peasy Pizza Dough - Loved it! My husband too loved each pizza I made, and the ones listed favorite were favorites for both of us. I really can't say enough good things about this book, and I can't wait to try the rest of the pizzas, especially the dessert pizzas. When I do I'll try and remember to update this review for you.

I am so happy to have added this book to my collection. I love pizza and am often disappointed by the pizzas that I order from around town because they often aren't all that flavorful and can cost a small fortune. This book is going to change all that for me and I couldn't be more thrilled. I started off by making the Easy-peasy Pizza Dough which couldn't have been any easier! I just mixed everything together and threw it in the fridge! My partner chose the Thai Peanut Pizza to start off with and it was delicious! The peanut sauce is so good! We added jalapeños which was a nice addition and I could see adding tiny cubes of baked tofu to it as well. For dessert we made the Raspberry Crumble pizza which was absolutely divine! I can't wait to try all the other recipes in this book. Making pizza never felt like an easy quick doable meal until now.

No photos! It's just a black and white book and it's not obvious that the pictures on the front come from recipes inside. Very disappointed.

I used this book for the first time last night and can already say that it was worth buying! The author has definitely got making simple delicious pizzas down to a science. If you have ever fumbled around online looking for vegan cheese pizza recipes without much luck, this book is your answer. The no knead dough was better than any other recipe I have tried in the past, the smoky cashew cheese was amazing- cheesier than real cheese, and the simple tomato sauce was great too. Looking forward to using this book often.

We have two new Lodge cast iron pizza pans, and the recipes from this book work perfectly with the pans! The various pizza dough recipes are useful, as are the tips for freezing pizza dough.

I didn't see that this was a Christian leadership book before buying it. I read it anyway thinking that faith and thoughtful leadership can coexist. I still think they can, but this book doesn't do a very good job of picking one or the other. The overall message is pretty much "you don't need permission to act like a leader." It's much more encouraging than it is thoughtful or helpful. There is a lot of repetition and a LOT of biblical references. The leadership advice isn't very good and the biblical references only vaguely reinforce the leadership points in the narrative. If you are a youth minister looking for an introduction to the most basic components of management or leadership to apply in a faith-based setting, maybe you will find this book helpful. Otherwise, I would suggest Start With WHY, or Radical Candor, or Switch, or Difficult Conversations to get a much more practical guide to what good leadership or management looks like in practice.

If you're looking for such "insights" as to "What God Says About Your Identity," this is the book for you. If you appreciate recommendations for Chick-fil-a milkshakes, sentences such as "Awareness is a great first step" and "I want you to imagine yourself five years from now," this is the book for you. The author eked out 225 pages of this stuff, layering in what appear to be sermon set-pieces about "positivity." There isn't a shred of original thinking or research - even in the form of interviews - to be found here. A total waste of money and time.

Excellent book. Heard the author speak about his book on the Andy Stanley leadership podcast and decided to give it a listen. Depending on the audience, this book is probably going to fall short for some. However, for me, I gleaned a lot from the author's experiences, and simply the practical style from which the book is written. To summarize the catch in the book - To lead when you are not in charge takes more introspection of oneself rather than others. How can I improve, how can I serve better - such reflections may not be what others are looking for but was a great reminder in the midst of a serve self leadership culture.I got the audio version, and was very happy with the book. Definitely recommending for those who know they can give more, but feel capped by the boss / leader over them.

Google brought me to this book, and it looked extremely helpful. After starting it however, I found it to be extremely religion focused and unhelpful. I only got about halfway through before having to stop it. The essential message is "you're a vessel of God, he has a plan for you, so just do things your way because itll work out because God wants it to. " Instead of providing real world examples, scientific studies, or any sort of data. The author just shares anecdotal evidence from his own life, and quotes bible passages.Extremely unhelpful with no evidence based tips.

What a great concept for a book and a complete let down. I purchased this book to continue to develop my communication skills. In fact, leading without authority was specifically what I was looking for, so of course I was excited about this book. When I began reading, I discovered that the author is a pastor, which gave me a little pause, but I was hopeful that because the book was not advertised as a book about religion there would be only incidental religious references. The further I read, the more I needed to skip over, until I finally gave up.THIS IS NOT A LEADERSHIP, COMMUNICATION, OR BUSINESS SKILLS BOOK.This is a bait and switch. This is a Christian book that discusses leadership. And its shameful that the author and publisher seem to be okay with conning readers.I'm not sure why people feel that it is okay to inject their religious beliefs into non-religious situations and force their beliefs on unsuspecting participants who, in all likelihood, have completely different beliefs. I am so sick of getting surprise sermons in completely unrelated places.

The bottom line that Clay brings out is that leadership begins before you wear the title of lleader. The best leaders step into leadership roles because they've already demonstrated leadership abilities, not the other way around, so start leading where you are right now. Essentially, it can be boiled down into taking initiative, being a good team member, and helping your leader be a better leader by dint of the support that you provide. Clay nuances it more into the details of what that looks like with skin on, making this a very helpful and encouraging book.

This book was both helpful and humorous, which I greatly appreciated since reading non-fiction isn’t my most favorite thing. This book explains how to start leading right now, no matter what seat you’re sitting in, or whatever your job title might be, and gives applications that readers can start doing right away to gain influence. The thing that makes this book stand out from all other leadership books I’ve read is the Biblical perspective that Clay provides throughout. Not only will those working in ministry benefit from the teaching, but so will business executives, teachers, accountants, plumbers, artists – everyone. If you’ve ever had the thought “if I was in charge…” or “this would work better if…” than this book is for you. Anyone can make change happen if it’s done the right way, and this book will guide you through the process.

Review

“…this one is really, really good. The thoughtful inclusion of so many unknowns, the representation for The Bowery, The Pike and LA, it works. And it tells a story in a way only another historian can really read. A fine, keen contribution to the legacy of the art itself. …if you buy any collections at all, this one is for you. It's not only different, it's in a class of its own. VTF2 has the best possible stuff, from the super sweet and rare…I've ever seen. …Beautiful. Go buy this book.” –Jeff Johnson, author of Tattoo Machine: Tall Tales, True Stories, and My Life in Ink

About the Author

Jonathan Shaw is a world traveling outlaw artist, novelist, notorious folk hero and apocalypse philosopher. A legendary tattoo master, trendsetter, and innovator and creator of underground art, Shaw was born in NY to big band legend Artie Shaw and movie star Doris Dowling. He was raised in LA where he learned to tattoo on the legendary Pike boardwalk from old-school California masters. After running with the likes of Jim Morrison, the Manson Family, and Charles Bukowski, Shaw fell prey to heroin addiction and a life of crime, before fleeing 1970s Hollywood to travel the world as a merchant seaman. After living and working in South America for decades, he returned to the city of his birth, where he founded Fun City Tattoo, the first street tattoo shop in NYC since tattooing was criminalized there in the 1960s. He is the author of Narcisa: Our Lady of Ashes (HarperCollins, 2008), Vintage Tattoo Flash (2016, Powerhouse Books), and Scab Vendor: Confessions of a Tattoo Artist (Turner Publishing, 2017).
