Having read this book first, then "Foundations of Japan" whch was written a few years later, I am inclined to agree with the comment made in "Foundations" that this book was written with a somewhat rosy outlook. That said, as with "Foundations" this is a set of observations on topics made by a traveller skilled in those areas, and in this case by one who had an ecological perspective somewhat more in line with today rathar than his early 1900's contemporaries. With the aid of hindsight, it's interesting to note how the author used examples of how things were done in the farming cultures of Japan and China to try and encourage American agriculture to incorporate crop rotation, complimentary plantings, organic composting, etc..

First published in 1911, with a preface by Dr. L. H. Bailey, Farmers of Forty Centuries is the kind of book that would be of interest to farmers and historians alike.This book was written at time in society when 'better living through chemistry' was just starting to take hold as mainstream thinking. Reductionist science, pesticides, and fertilizer were gaining strength and agriculture was changing from a point of view that works with the natural processes to a system that conquers and controls plants natural impulses. Taking into account the time when this book was written, and one can see that it is an important book in the history of agriculture and an excellent reference for modern farmers that might have been lost if not for the dedication of people who converted it to e-text.The preface by Dr Bailey, discusses where American agriculture stands at the turn of the last century (1900). It mentions how farming in the North America is very successful, and acknowledged that this is primarily because the population density of the continent is sparse and people have been cultivating the soil for a relatively short time. Bailey mentions that in order to properly conquer the land and turn it to our needs (common attitude of the time)we must be careful not to strip it of fertility. Chemical farming alone will do this over time; however, by examining agricultural practices that have sustained themselves for long periods without loosing soil fertility - then american farming can be even more productive (shame this wasn't taken to heart at the time).The book itself is examines agricultural practices in some of the most densely populated areas of the world at the time in hopes of gleaming some useful information.Given where we are now with industrialized farming, this book might just be what we need to help understand how we can regain some of the waste farmland that now has very little or no agricultural use thanks to poor management practices over the last 100 years.The kindle version has no interactive menus, no way of quick navigation and no pictures. But there are no obvious errors in the text.This book is perfect for both small farmers and large scale agri-business.

This is not the book that is advertised. The original book and the table of contents shows over 370 pages but this reprint is only 30 pages! Also missing in this pamphlet are almost all of the original photographs. Do yourself a favor and look at other "editions" Heck this isnt even an edition except they edited almost all of the book. This is just a bad scan of the first 30 pages from a library book, complete with a former readers penciling.

Unless there was a mistake with my order, this is not what I expected. There are only 30 page. Its a pamphlet with an introduction and one chapter. There are suppose to be 17 chapters and over 376 pages and 248 illustrations....This little pamphlet was way over priced if this is what I was supposed to get. 50 cents would have been about right. Anyone else have this problem?

A very interesting and instructive book … a study of traditional farming practices, and how they were intertwined with the cultures of the far East, as seen and interpreted by an academic nearly a century ago. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, including its sometimes archaic style. If you want a book for cold winter nights, I think you will enjoy reading this work.The orientation of the contents is toward the preservation of timeless conservative agricultural techniques and practices, where, by contrast, the practices in the Western world seem more or less brute force techniques.I found the book as charming as instructive … and, thought provoking!

Interesting, but pretty dated material. I guess I shouldn't be shocked at the farmers of that time period using human poo for soil fertility. Interesting to see how tight their system of recycling nutrients was.

Do NOT buy this edition. The font is approximately size 6. The photographs that make this book great are totally missing. The tables are formatted terribly. Reading a good copy changed my understanding of what sustainable means. Thousands of years of farming tied to civilization is a rare coincidence that gets documented here thoroughly. We have almost everything to change in the US if we want to make it.

I first read this in the Small Farm Journal. It recounts the ingenuity and hard work that Chinese employ to make the most of resources. Some of the grainy photographs were included there, but this republication does not include the photographs which I think are important.

It’s been a long time since I’ve written a review, and I’m writing this minutes after finishing “The Way I Used To Be.” In the hundreds (thousands?) of books I’ve read in my lifetime, I’ve never related to a fictional character more. I read the last ten percent with tears in my eyes, hating that it had to end but knowing there would be some relief once it did.This book is heartbreaking on so many levels. Aesthetically, the writing is absolutely gorgeous – I can’t believe this a debut, and I will preorder every one of Amber Smith’s following books without even bothering to read the synopsis. From page one you are captivated by this story, and it was near impossible to put down. It’s been a long time since I’ve finished a nearly 400 page book in 24 hours.It hurt to read sometimes, because reading Eden’s words felt so much like reading my own thoughts, both as a teenager and now. We don’t have the same story, but books like this are necessary because they remind you that you don’t need to have the same experiences as someone to understand their journey. Emotions are universal. The struggle to overcome any trauma is nearly indescribable, and yet Smith did this in a way that made it seem almost effortless. I rarely read the same book twice, but this is a book I will revisit time and time again.I don’t know what else to say. Oddly, words don’t seem like enough. This book was so much at once. If I had to choose one word, I’d choose beautiful – but even that doesn’t encompass everything that it is. If you’re reading this review on Amazon or Goodreads, please, please, please go and buy it. I’m a stranger to you, but I promise you won’t regret it.I know a lot of people read books to escape, but I’ve always read to connect. Never before have I connected so completely with a story. I dreamt about it last night after reading nearly half of it in one sitting, and I think I’ll dream about it again tonight. The scenes were so vivid, the characters so completely real. I think it might be another lifetime before I feel this way about a book again. I almost hope it is.

In The Way I Used To Be, we are introduced to Eden a fourteen year old girl who endured a horrible breach of trust in a person whom her family accepted into their family. Caelin, her brother has been her protector and friend. They were close until he went away to college. When he went away to college the family dynamics changed. Her father no longer had his buddy to root for in sports. Her mother no longer had the responsibilities of doting on him. The household seemed empty and lost without him. He was the glue that held the family together.This story is broken down by each high school year. For Eden high school became about the groups, rules, and cliques. Eden didn’t fit into any groups or cliques. Nobody stood up for people like her and Mara who got bullied. Not fitting is not something that gets talked about. Eden realized she was suppose to accept their behavior. After all she believed it was her problem that others bully her because she was too weak to stand up to them. Eden knew better than this, but she feels like her family, her friends, and the school system has failed her.We watch Eden cope by finding alternate ways to avoid the negative attention placed upon her. Both Mara and Eden explore areas that garner them the necessary reprieve they are looking for at certain moments in life.Eden just wants to blend in and be normal and finish school unscathed. It’s an adjustment and one that’s difficult to manage with no role model to follow. Eden is a young teenager trying to navigate the tough years of adolescence in high school. Eden goes through some very awkward stages in her high school years. It’s completely understandable considering the circumstances. The rape not only violated her body but her mind as well. Eden is confused and doesn’t know how to express the feelings taking place within herself.I found Eden’s character to be quite relatable given the circumstances of her relationship with her parents, brother, and Kevin. Her stages of rebellion were the best ways for her to deal or cope with these confusing feelings when she lacked a support system.I was so afraid to read this book due to subject matter inside. I got to say Amanda Smith made it easy to read. Rape is a scary word and when attached to a persons age and the identity of that person it’s even more alarming. I didn’t want to read about a rape, yet Amanda made sure to be careful with how she wrote that scene. I survived because Amanda was cautious enough to focus on the aftermath of that situation. That’s what I strived for, in this book an opportunity to read about one girls struggle with a toxic secret that ruined her life.

I was hooked after the first paragraph. I absolutely love Amber Smith's writing style. She's very narrative, and that's something I like from authors. Eden's story is so unique and relatable, I feel even to those who aren't victims of sexual assault. I related to her depression so much, in a way, that the book was hard to read at some points. This is the first book that really made me FEEL! I could read this book over and over again. It's addicting.

This book is so incredibly intense that it's virtually unputdownable.I read 300 pages tonight in one sitting.This story is brave. It exposes the truths that sexual assault can happen to anyone, its damage lasts a lifetime and manifests in many forms, and it affects so many people in the victim's circle.But it's also not a happy journey. It's realistic. It will stop your heart as she avoids the truth and attempts to cover the pain and refuses help.Yet, I respect the ending and finished satisfied. It should be required reading for everyone age 14 and up....because it's a harrowing and ugly truth that needs to be addressed.No means no.

This was a heavy book. It was a fairly quick read, as I finished it in less than a week. It started out with tragedy, then went back and told the story beforehand, and what happened afterward. It's sad that what happened completely shaped Eden, resulting in her morphing into a new person--and not a good one, either. I wish it would have been just a little longer, or at least contained an epilogue, just to witness justice. But I think readers will work out for themselves what happens next.

About the Author

Cherie Dimaline is a Métis author and editor whose award-winning fiction has been published and anthologized internationally. Very useful in my line of work.

This manual is a great little design guide. In addition to covering the design of substation structures, it provides a great deal of background information about structural standards and design approaches in general. Things like base plate bolt design and wind design equations are explained in a way that is missing in many other references. The authors of this guide take the time to provide a few hints about why things are done a certain way, and not merely telling you what to do. As any good engineer knows, knowing the "why" is critical to good judgement and understanding how to approach atypical conditions.

This book did not meet my expectations. The description of the book led me to believe that the different materials used in substation design would be described in detail and show calculations. This book came up short. Even the title suggests that there would be sizes and design guides on how to size structures.

In this simple but harrowing memoir, Wiernicki recounts his involvement with the Polish underground and his subsequent imprisonment in Nazi labor and death camps. What emerges is a raw expose of the evil perpetrated against millions, the "deliberate, cold, premeditated murder of innocent people." Wiernicki's young, privileged existence fundamentally changes in the summer of 1939, when the Germans invade Poland. Within 28 days, the German forces wreak havoc on the entire nation, but they focus on burning synagogues and splintering families within Jewish communities. A proud Pole, Wiernicki joins the Polish resistance movement an impassioned but fragmented and necessarily secretive group as a freedom fighter. After being captured and tortured by the Gestapo, Wiernicki, a gentile, meets a fate similar to that of the millions of Jews whose extermination he soon witnesses. Wiernicki captures the brutality of the SS men as well as the total dehumanization of the inmates the reason they are unable to wield any resistance within the camps. Particularly startling are Wiernicki's accounts of the guards' sadistic behavior; that other authors have told these tales before does not lessen their power. Frightened prisoners are forced to sing at the whim of an SS man on penalty of death; women are humiliated and abused. Ruthless beatings and brutal kickings are the norm, Wiernicki writes, even during routine work. Wiernicki, a Polish partisan, was captured by the Gestapo in 1943 and sent to Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. From there he was sent to Buchenwald, and he escaped during a death march in April 1945 as the Germans forced 2,000 prisoners to flee ahead of advancing Allied troops. The author begins his memoir with a brief description of his prewar years growing up in the city of Lwow, his summer vacations, and his year at the military academy of Lwow, where he had planned to spend the next four years. He then writes of his life as a resistance fighter before being captured. Wiernicki, a gentile, recounts the killing of Jews in Auschwitz-Birkenau and describes his encounters with Josef Mengele and Heinz Thilo, the infamous SS doctors who conducted medical experiments on prisoners. Wiernicki's memoir, which includes 17 black-and-white photographs, is a haunting and intimate account of the Holocaust, written with an almost unbearable clarity. I found this because John Wiernicki is the father of a colleague of mine. Moreover, I am very interested in any personal stories about experiences in the War. This one is particularly poignant because it is the personal story of a young Polish man who, when the Germans invaded, became part of the Polish Underground. He was eventually captured and sent to Auschwitz camps. He is very articulate in describing the details of the camp and its operations. The lining up of the Jews for the "showers" and the smell of the incinerators is graphic, and not for squeamish readers.The adventures he experienced, both before Auschwitz and with his escape, are the stuff of adventure stories, and he writes them well. But the story of camp life is something else. It's hard to believe it actually happened. His descriptions the prisoners and their interactions are touchingly real.This book is very hard (emotionally) to read, but it is important.

This is the story of John Wiernicki, a Polish Resistance fighter and a survivor of three concentration camps. He also worked on construction projects for the Germans late in the war under horrible conditions. The author was captured in 1943 by the Germans as a Resistance fighter and sent to Auschwitz. He had two things going for him. He wasn't Jewish, and Polish prisoners could receive packages from home twice a month. Because he could get food from home he was physically in better shape and could barter for better necessities for himself in camp. He also gave away his camp food to other prisoners, earning him their eternal gratitude. Also, being Polish, when he was sick in one of the camp hospitals he managed to stay long enough to really get better unlike so many others for who the hospital was another way to death. Unfortunately, by the end of 1944 the author was rarely getting food from home any longer thanks mostly to conditions brought on by the war. Eventually he ended up starving along with the other prisoners. I found this a most interesting book and a very important historical document. It describes what the camps were like by someone that wasn't Jewish thus verifying the Hell that they were all in. A great read and an important part of history.

This book was written by a neighbor/dear friend. Having known the man who wrote the book is very special and to read his story, even more special. He was (recently deceased) an incredibly kind, giving man with an equally wonderful wife. His encounters with the death camps is chilling and a story that must not be lost in history. This account comes from the soul and speaks to all survivors of the horrific internment wrought by the Nazis.

This is an outstanding book and I highly recommend it to any one wanting to learn about World Two, the Holocaust, and Auschwitz. Mr. Wiernicki experienced everything in this book and it is an excellent source of first hand information. He takes the reader form the summer of 1939 to the spring of 1945. The author, a christain pole, was witness to all of the horror of the nazi concentration camps and forced slave labor that happened on a daily basis.To anybody who doubts that the Holocaust ever happened, please read this book.

Great story line if you are wanting to learn more than one aspect of WWII. The readers were very entertaining and keep your attention.

This book is a waste of paper, it will not help you master ANYTHING. For example, the entire topic of Custom Renderers, a somewhat complex feature to help with platform-specific implementations, is allocated approximately one page of this book. The overview in the online Xamarin documentation is orders of magnitude deeper than what this book provides. At best you could call this a Cross-Platform Development with Xamarin high-level overview.
