I have truly enjoyed reading Martha's new book "Be the Business" which highlighted where IT leaders shall take their steps forward to keep their role active and add business value in different ways but it all starts with having a full understanding of your business and where it is heading and then to provide the business with IT and technical solutions to fulfill these needs and upon getting that done you are moving from being a fully IT leader of operations to IT leader of business enabler.Driving the business is a new concept and philosophy where IT leaders need to adopt which adds huge challenge on our mindset and how we were raised in the early days of the IT world. Being a driver requires the IT leader not just to understand his/her business but it takes it a bit further by having solid understanding of the world economy, market condition, and the competitors and how to as an IT leader can put all that together and innovate IT solutions to keep your organization always ahead of their game.It is a great book to read, understand, and apply at your workforce before it is too late to change your IT and business mindset.Thank You Martha for the great efforts and for all the IT leaders you have interviewed. You are indeed adding great value to all of us in IT and Business.

I missed some more, detailed frameworks that I could apply. Sometimes there were too many quotes. Also, spends too much time comparing the past and not inventing the future.

Martha Heller is the a league of her own. AMAZING read.

Provides good insights about the role than an IT executive should be playing in this new Digital Era, not too much ideas of how to break the still current C level mentality about the CIO role

I was very excited when I first saw this book as I have enjoyed reading several of Martha's articles on CIO.com. Here is my first take on this book - this book is just a mish mash of various CIO thoughts. Its not very well organized or engaging and I had no desire to read the book. I would start with reading the first page of a chapter and then jump to next chapter until I didnt find any value in reading the book. The chapter topics are all great but content not so well organized. I am hoping to come back to the book with an empty mind at another time as I dont want to miss any insights between the lines. I will update my review later if I find any such valuable insights.

Great outline and roadmap for today's CIO.

Who is accountable for IT in a modern business? What role does IT play? Are boundaries still mixed and thus opportunities being lost? All this and more is considered in this interesting book that looks at the role IT leadership can and should have in a company and what changes IT leaders may need to do to remain relevant in this brave new world.It can sound a dry and esoteric subject to an outsider, but the author has expertly weaved together a host of disciplines, experiences, research and opinion together to make a fascinating, essential book. This is a book that does generate much thought! IT is no longer something confined to the “IT department”, the world and his dog can have an opinion about IT and how to make it better. Add in the “new media” disciplines such as web design and ecommerce and throw in some industrial automation for good measure and soon there are lot of people trying to stir the IT stew. Larger companies, in particular, still need strategic guidance and leadership for their IT, but the nominal IT head might not be getting the visibility and internal respect that they need and deserve.So this book may help on many levels. It can let the CIO or similar leader evolve their organisation to utilise and integrate all technology within the company and it may let other managers see how they do not need to fear losing part of their domain by cooperating with the IT department. As IT is more and more an integral part of a company’s operational DNA, it is essential that all areas can function efficiently, accurately and support each other.The author is direct. This is not an “instant solution” guide but it does help you work on identifying and formulating a strategy that you can seek to get buy-in with. The book though draws you in (no matter what your job title may be) and it helps focus your thoughts towards the company’s IT operational requirements. It just felt to a powerful, sympathetic and actionable sort of book.It is something that senior management should consider to help them view their company’s operational landscape going forward. For senior IT people, it gives you the benefit of a knowledgeable consultant, mentor and guide by your side. It may be a bit of a specialist read but it is capable of having much broader appeal and impact if you allow it to.

First, the good: extensive vocabulary with pictures, in color, in categories, pleasing to the eye. That's a fun way to learn for someone who already can pronounce the words. Now, the bad: spelling errors! in a dictionary! On p. 8, almond in French is spelled as "amende" , twice, when it should be "amande". On p. 267, mattress is spelled ending with a " t" instead of "matelas", which would be correct. This book only arrived yesterday and I saw these two errors just quickly scanning the book. As a retired French teacher, I am hugely disappointed in DK Publishing letting this book be printed and sold as accurate. It is not. At the very least, the company should go through the book again, proofread, and issue an errata page.

I have purchased many DK books in the past and I love the visual presentation and organization of the books and this one is no different. However the book is advertised as having a companion app for mobile devices. This unfortunately is where a serious problem lies. The app does not function, at all, for anyone. Every review of the app states the same thing, that is does not function and the content that is supposed to come with the book purchase can not be unlocked. Unfortunate as the book itself is what I was hoping for but I expected the app to work as well.

What a fun dictionary. I enjoy just looking at the photos and seeing many words that relate to one topic. For example, if you want to know what various parts of a car are called, it's quite easy to see most of them on a few pages. Also, like the pictures of food with their names. I even recommended it to a French friend to help her with her English. It won't replace your regular dictionary, but it's a useful addition.

So I read the reviews and am convinced to use this instead of my usual Oxford picture dictionary. I never had problems with the Oxford series, but I thought I'd give this a try. I open it up and immediately find that "doctor" is translated as "le doctor". Excuse me? Anyone who has ever contributed to Doctors Without Borders knows that the French word for doctor is "mèdecin". I found a couple of similar errors, so I don't trust this dictionary very much. It is easy to carry, colorful, and easy to read, but it also has fewer words than the Oxford series.Have a second dictionary on hand if you insist on using this -- to check their translations!

My husband's first language is French and no one in his family speaks English except for him. He finally got tired of translating for me and I started taking French classes about a year ago. I already knew basic things like menus and how to say hello and general light conversation.I found this book extremely helpful because it is a departure from a traditional French/English dictionary that just lists words in alphabetical order. I have one of those old clunkers at home and it's about 20 pounds and gotten zero use. Because this dictionary groups things together by topic, it is SO much easier to use. If we are talking about sports or going out shopping, I can turn to those pages and I have a list of words I can use to join the discussion. It makes things so much easier when I'm trying to communicate with family.The pictures are also a great visual aid. I'm a big visual learner so this really helps me understand what I'm learning and saying. My husband's family can also point to pictures and help me use them correctly.I've seen a couple of drawbacks in other reviews. One of them is the size. I actually prefer the smaller size. It feels a lot more portable that something larger and I don't feel so silly if I need to take it with me if we go out to eat. The other drawback was that there is no pronunciation guide. Unfortunately that part can be frustrating. I got lucky and married a walking/talking pronunciation guide for when I get stuck so this doesn't apply to me.In any case, I HIGHLY recommend this dictionary. It feels more interactive than the old clunkers and will get far more use.

I have been visiting a young man from Central America for the past year. He fled for his life and while seeking asylum and is being held in an immigration detention center. Our visits are challenging as they are by phone with a large, thick piece of glass between us. He told me he wanted to learn English and so my Early Childhood Education background clicked in and I began with the body parts. I would point to my nose and he would say, "nose"... hand, foot, etc. I wanted to get him a picture dictionary and so I went to Amazon and this one was highly rated so I checked it out. When I 'Looked Inside' the first page that came up was on Body Parts and so I purchased it and had it sent to him at the Detention Center. I have not seen this book, BUT the reaction I got from this young man is why I gave it 5 stars. He went on and on (generally shy and quiet) telling me about all the different categories AND how everyone in his barracks circled around him to look at it. They all liked it and some offered to buy it from him. :)

Wow, what a great little book jam packed with info and clear photos. Note that this goes way beyond food groups and household stuff, all the way to the innards of pregnancy and other medical funsies, so prepare yourself for some eye popping photos, especially if you are using this with kids. (Not gross, just clear. The kind of clear you want if you are in a foreign hospital or doctor's office, so I'm glad they included it.)This is, hands down, a required resource for language learning. It's abundantly clear and helpful. I wish I had it years ago.

They claimed that they had an audio component included with the visual in the book. I tried, Verizon employees tried, and so did 3 employees at a computer repair shop. They did not include a password or code to activate it. There is no way to call the company to ask. They left that out too. If looking don't buy it in the hopes you can hear and learn French. Like every other product, it is words and pretty pictures.

Four stories by D.L. Snell, Ryan C. Thomas, John Sunseri, and R. Thomas Riley that foretell four apocalyptic scenarios, each involving the four elements (earth, air, fire, and water). An interesting and original idea.The first two stories Remains by D.L. Snell (air) and Silence in Heaven by John Sunseri (air) were okay. They featured interesting scenarios, but weren't as enjoyable as the last two stories. However, they were interesting enough to make the purchase of this book worth it. And I'm sure others will get more enjoyment out of them than I did. Forgive me for not being more detailed about what they are about.Remains deals with people beginning to spontaneously combust. Silence in Heaven deals with people living underground and trying to survive the polluted air and the limited oxygen supply they have.The last two stories: Phrenetic by R. Thomas Riley (earth) and With a Face of Golden Pleasure (water) were amazing.Phrenetic dealt with animals (under the direction of the Earth herself) rebelling against humans. We follow several different characters who eventually wind up in the same place, trying to figure out how to survive this new world order. You quickly come to care about the characters and what they are going through. And if you think about it, if a similar scenario ever occurred, humanity wouldn't stand a chance. Even the most docile of creature (such as a prairie dog) could do some real damage, especially if dozens of them attacked at once.With a Face of Golden Pleasure was easily my favorite of the stories. It deals with water suddenly drying up everywhere for no explicable reason. We focus on one guy in particular, Cam. But we also get to know his estranged wife, Becky, their son, Cobalt, and his brother-in-law, Scott. We witness their struggle to stay alive and figure out how to find water. And they witness the world dying around them.Of all the things in this world, water is the most essential. We use it for so much, beyond drinking it: cooking, washing our clothes, washing dishes, showering, flushing the toilet, watering the lawn, washing the car. We truly take it for granted. Riots and wars have broken out in other countries over access to water. In California, who gets how much water and where it goes is tightly regulated. Water, more than anything, makes the world go round. And water is essential to keep our bodies working. People die everyday from a lack of water or from drinking polluted water.Because of all that, Ryan C. Thomas's scenario is the scariest and potentially the most realistic. If water started to disappear what would you do to survive?The last two stories make the money spent on this book worth it. And you might enjoy the first two in a way that I didn't. Give it a shot. You won't regret it.

Elements of the Apocalypse, as the title suggests, gives the reader four stories using the classic elements to show us how the apocalypse will occur. I thought it was a creative take on apocalyptic stories from the standpoint of using this theme. Fire, Air, Earth, and Water are the means to our destruction, and a different author took a swipe at each particular element.The first story, by DL Snell, gives us fire as the source of our destruction. Dylan Bradley is minding his own business on a bus ride home from school for spring break when the bus driver bursts into flames. Rather quickly, most of the people around him are doing the same, as spontaneous combustion takes hold as the means to our end. Dylan races home with several other characters as madness takes a hold of the few remaining survivors, in an effort to find his girlfriend.The second story, by John Sunseri, deals with aliens invading our planet and placing huge atmospheric generators on earth, which make our air unbreathable for humans. Thirty years later, a team from New America, the last surviving lair of humans, has created a device that might help them fight back. Led by Bess, the toughest survivor left, they climb out of their underground hideout and make their way to one of the alien's air processing stations with the device in tow. Since the atmosphere is polluted not only with unbreathable air, but with "demons" and "diggers", both servants to the aliens who crave the oxygen inside human blood, making the trek is somewhat like traversing one of the nine planes of hell.The third story, by R. Thomas Riley, has the animal kingdom in revolt against humanity when Gaia decides that we are poor caretakers of our planet and she needs to start over. Animals don't just turn on us, they become smart and vicious servants of their earth mother. But Gaia has a plan, and that includes enslaving some of the humans to do more of her dirty work.The final story, by Ryan C. Thomas, has water the entire world over disappearing in a rapid fashion, leading to a desperate scramble to find the cause and find the last remaining sources of drinkable water on the planet. Cam, an estranged husband and father, has to work with Scott, his scientist brother in law, in an attempt to discover the cause of this catastrophe, while at the same time trying to find water for his infant son as he lay dying from dehydration.Each story has individual merits, and I give credit to each author for giving us compelling characters that made each story more than just simple doom anthems. I grew attached enough to the characters that I found myself rooting for them to find a miracle despite knowing how most of these types of stories end. I am not going to pick out a favorite here, because I really don't think any of them missed the mark, and there were parts of each tale that resonated for me. If you enjoy reading stories about our destruction that lean toward the fantastic, than this book is a entertaining choice I highly recommend.

Excellent. This does not normally provide the detail in the foxhole, even though it does provide that detail occasionally, and often in stories I have not heard before. What this does provide is priceless. The Central drive has reams available that tell us what was "really" happening, the intrigues and issues. This book is the first I've seen that goes in-depth into the New Guinea campaign. I now understand the politics behind Roosevelt's decision to bring MacArthur back, him being an important pawn in a scheme to appease Curtain and Churchill both of which had real conflicting needs. It helped me see what was going on at that time, rather than continue with the current armchair nasty view of MacArthur. He was an egotist and self-focused to be sure, but he was neither a coward nor a fool. The man was forced into a convenient position by brilliant/diabolical political maneuver, and did a pretty good job. Those abandoned, would never be able to see this because of the horrors they faced, for which MacArthur was the near-term scapegoat, yet the real issue was that the US turned it's back on them because it failed to prepare. The logic of why it came down the way it did when the bombs fell, is uncomfortably valid, the damage already done years prior in not spending funds to meet obligations. A black mark on our history, but not actually MacArthur's. This book made me start to realize this. I thought he was just a jerk prior to this.There were other things that were new to me. For example, the meeting between Nimitz, Roosevelt and MacArthur has had no depth to me prior to this book. I feel like I know now what that meeting was a about and even the emotional / political details about it, normally lost with most historical accounts having one or two sentences. Fascinating stuff.The book is fresh, and I highly recommend it. Read with the Army and Marine accounts of battles, that dive into the rich minutia, one gets a complete picture.

I can remember two WWII-related state funerals as a youth in the 60’s: MacArthur’s and Churchill’s. Now, fifty years later and with time on my hands, those recollections fueled an effort to personally re-establish how these men rose to such vaulted status in the eyes of the world. Publication of Duffy’s book coincided with my reading project, and became the first one I purchased after discovering on the internet that I was sadly ignorant of the entire New Guinea campaign. I found the book well crafted and highly engaging; balancing factual back-story elements with frightful details of the ensuing battles. MacArthur’s personal drive, absolute confidence in his own skills, and ability to inspire others beyond their limitations are clearly demonstrated, as he forces the Japanese from island to island across the archipelago. Duffy aptly describes an outstanding Leader and military commander who stands in stark contrast to the US leadership of today. It’s a great read.

Excellent work on the New Guinea campaign. Author James Duffy gives the reader an excellent history, well told, encompassing the ground, air and naval war in 1942-1943.The author begins with the taking of Rabaul on New Britain by the Japanese, creating an outpost for Japanese air, ground and naval forces. The author moves on to Gen. Douglas MacArthur being ordered to leave the Philippines and go to Australia. From there, MacArthurwould plan and lead the Allies comeback in the Southwest Pacific theater.James Duffy does an excellent job of chronicling the campaign from beginning to end. Quite rightly, he highlights the contribution of the Australians, especially in the beginning, that were the main ground assets available to MacArthur. The tough "Aussies" were both unblooded soldiers and two divisions of veterans of North Africa who had already seen combat and were experienced. Duffy gives the reader a good idea of the physical environment of the island with it's hot, humid, malarial jungles and high, rugged mountains.The reader will quickly realize that the Southwest Pacific had a very low priority for reinforcement and equipment. In the beginning, an invasion force may consist of several destroyers with a number of destroyer transports, tugs, trawlers, steamers, etc. It is apparent to the reader that the US Navy wanted to do as little as possible to assist MacArthur preferring instead to fight their own war against the Imperial Japanese Navy.MacArthur and his command had to do more with less. When one reads about the comparison of casualties between MacArthur's operations and the bloodbaths like Tarawa in the Central Pacific, much of it is a result of the paucity of resources at SWPA's command. MacArthur simply couldn't waste resources - including human resources - because he had so little to work with. This is especially true in the beginning of the campaign.The author uses a lot of first-hand accounts in his narrative and that's something I enjoy reading - the words of the people who were there at the time and participated in these battles. There's also a lot from the Japanese point of view and the reader gets a sense of the often rash and foolish attitude of Japanese commanders who always seemed to prefer the most direct (and obvious) course of action. Japanese strategists send units without being able to supply them and the number of Japanese soldiers who simply starved to death is appalling.Without a doubt, this is a very good account of the New Guinea campaign and I recommend it to those interested with five stars. It was a good read!

Good book.

This book has some interesting parts dealing with the history of the discovery of autoimmunity, and it is competently although not engagingly written. It is pretty scant on details regarding the pathology, or even the specific molecular markers and targets of the many diseases. It is also disappointing that the work of several luminaries is dismissed without much discussion of what they actually proposed. For example, the lack of discussion of Jerne, who won the Nobel Prize for his work, which was highly respected at the time but now is thought not really relevant to the understanding of Immunology. Amusingly, the authors refer to the work of Gadjusek in complement fixation, then dismissively state he went on to propose some vague genetic explanation for Kuru, a disease in a native tribe in New Guinea. Whether one respects what he found or not, it did win the Nobel Prize, and it was not a vague genetic disease, but appeared to be a slow virus that was transmitted through cannibalism. The final section of the book is a waste of time. It attempts to inject philosophy into the self- not-self question. This was pure sophistry. Finally, the book proper is actually less than half the total pages, which include a very extensive bibliography and index. The bibliography stands alone, as the cited works are not referenced in the text. Most curious.

A must read for anyone interested in the history of immunology - beautifully written

In his latest book Anderson (along with McKay) again brilliantly straddles the chasm that often exists between science and the public understanding of it. By making disease both deeply personal and yet retaining a narrative that is both scientifically literate and philosophically stimulating he again pulls of a remarkable feat-a book that thoroughly satisfies the expert and lay person. I loved his book on kuru for the same reasons. A must read for a wide range of intelligent minds.

This book makes a uniquely wonderful, learned and readily readable contribution to the medical, scientific, historical, social and literary underpinnings of autoimmunity and its discontents, and will keep the reader's attention and improve his or her knowledge throughout. I highly commend it to both the specialist and general reader.

nice read. Interesting topic

I was looking forward to reading this book because I like immunology. I was very disappointed. The language is stilted and there is too much philosophy and not enough immunology. There is very little information about the scientists as people. While the book started slowly, I was hoping that it would improve or that I would get more used to the authors' style as I progressed through the book. Alas this didn't happen and I stopped reading the book about halfway through. I cannot recommend this book.

An AMAZING short read from Destiny Hawkins that left my DYING for more!!!I LOVED reading along as Faith said goodbye to her old barely functioning life and embraced that second chance that she was given by Alexa. We were just starting to scratch the surface of this relationship. I NEED MORE!!!This is the first book that I read from Destiny Hawkins and will not be the last!!!! She is a very talented author and I can not wait to dive in deeper to this story along with the rest of her backlist of books. I recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of paranormal stories!!

Faith is down on her luck. She has lost the two people in her life that have mattered. She finds herself in a place where she must make a decision about the path of her life, but runs into a woman that stands out in an indescribable way. She is drawn towards this woman and even follows her into an alley for fear the woman is in danger. What happens next, changes Faith’s life forever. No spoilers here!!!

I really enjoyed this book. Really good plot to the story. Very well written. Would highly recommend it to anyone who likes this kind of stories. Can't wait to read more from Destiny Hawkins. Never a dull moment.

This was a really good short story. It is Faith's story. She is a 21 year old girl addicted to heroin. She is ready to end it all, until a chance encounter with Alexa. Alexa is a vampire, but she has been modified. She turns Faith and this is the beginning of their story

This was a really good book! The main characters Alexa and Faith were very intense. Looking forward to the sequel of this story.

These vampires are a little different. At least the main one, Alexa, is. I hope to read more about her and find out just how she came to be.

Love this book. Can wait for book 3.
